Calling Huddle GM’s: How would you fix our QB and O line in ONE offseason?

Hire Mike Munchak for an obscene amount of money as the OL coach.  He's a former 9x Pro Bowl Guard and one of the most well respected OL coaches in the game.  Make him Assistant Head Coach.  Give him a guaranteed, multi-year contract.  Whatever he wants.   Just get him here.

Give him the first two picks in the draft.  At #6 it would likely be Tyler Linderbaum or one of the LT.  In the top of the 4th starting interior OL can still be found so trust Munchak's eye to get one there.   Then give him a blank checkbook to hire any FA linemen he needs.  Will be expensive but it will add one or two more top guys.

All that influx of talent + Moton and great blocking schemes fixes the OL.  Brady Christensen & Deonte Brown finally get good coaching and start to develop as credible linemen.   Cut every other guy on the Panther's current OL.

Add a couple of blocking-first TE and a massive FB as UDFA.  Nobody wants those positions anymore so it wouldn't be too difficult to find them.   Also some UDFA RB to have a bunch of bodies available for the expected injuries during the season.  Fill the practice squad with these guys.

With the vastly improved OL and the extra beef to support the run,  our rushing game improves significantly.  This provides great support for the QB and makes the play-action pass work.   We're stuck with Sam Darnold as QB next year so maybe he plays "OK" with all of these improvements.  I don't think he'll ever be a long-term starter in the NFL but maybe he's good enough to get through the year.  Sign a vet QB as well.

This team wouldn't be too explosive but would eat up clock, let the defense rest and cover up the sins of having a below-average QB.  Maybe leads to a .500 record but it would be a vast improvement over this season.  And it would set the stage for drafting a top rookie QB in 2023.  All the pieces would be in place for him to succeed right away.

What qb stud is a free agent?

we don’t have a day 2 pick.

Trade is more likely so should included that there too, but Rodgers and Wilson both have potential outs of their contracts.

We have a GM with an affinity for trades, I imagine we'll end up with at least one day 2 pick.

Rodgers and wilson do not have outs in their contract to become free agents.  We would have to trade for them.  Furthermore why would either want to come here.

How do you imagine us getting a 2nd?  That means we either have to trade our 2022 1rst or trade down from 6.

Hire Flores

Trade for Watson

Trade with what? We don't have a 2nd or 3rd to offer with our first this year. Which means we'd have to mortgage away most, if not all, of our high picks over the next two season...meaning we won't be able to use the draft to fix the woeful offensive line

This really isn’t the big problem.

it’s a strong FA class for offensive linemen, and the panthers are picking high enough to draft a franchise QB.

My concerns are more with our inability to develop talent and a dated offensive philosophy, along with an atrocious power hierarchy. Oh, and an owner who doesn’t know what he’s doing.

I agree with everything you said in paragraph 2. You're overly optimistic in paragraph 1.

It amazes me that so many people think Carolina is a desirable destination for highly ranked FA offensive lineman. Way too many posters keep saying we can fix the line thru free agency. Well, we're not the only team attempting to upgrade their line this off-season.

We are on of the five or sixth worst teams in the NFL with all of the problems you clearly outlined in paragraph two. I don't think ANY good to great lineman would even consider coming here, and the last thing we need are mediocre lineman. Then again mediocre might be an upgrade at the guard and center positions.

That's for the team to convince them not me.  Idk what moves they will make between now and then to entice top players. We aren't even sure yet if we'll have the same head coach because idk how easy it will be to lure a good OC candidate away for a potential lame duck coach.  Until we've heard directly from Tepper that's still up in the air.

A day 2 pick isn't necessarily a 2nd rounder, but you can trade down in the first, trade up from the fourth, trade future draft capital, trade players.

    • I feel like this trade just lives rent free in people's heads and keeps morphing into different things. First thing is that the rumored trade was for future firsts. They wouldn't have any extra picks in 2023; the firsts would have been for 2024 and 2025. With very few exceptions, NFL GMs don't value picks that far away. You have to have a lot of job security to pull that off. Like Chiefs, Eagles, Rams kinda stability. That's obviously not the case with David Tepper, especially since he'd just fired his head coach. No GM except for like Howie Roseman is going to trade an asset you have now for a future asset you probably get to use.  Second, at the time you'd have to assume these are first rounders late in the first round. Obviously currency is currency and the panthers need young players, but these weren't slam dunk top ten picks. At the end of the day there's one pick that separates a first and second round pick.  Lastly, the only place that ever reported this trade was the Rams. All the reporters just repeated what McVay said and it became gospel. We have no idea how serious the negotiations were, if they ever really happened, if the offer was real, etc. And I personally believe McVay and Sneed are the kind of guys who would make up rumors like that to fug up other teams, mostly because I assume if I've thought of it someone smarter than me has.  I don't know how you'd call it the greatest draft haul of all time. Firsts quickly lose their value the farther out they are and Burns had 16.5 sacks last season. And anyway those picks would probably just been tossed into the burning inferno of the Bryce trade up so it's a moot point anyway.
