'20 Cam vs. '21 Garoppolo (and '19) (+ a Darnold tidbit)

Does Cam want to play here again next year?

If so, what's a fair deal compensation wise for both him and the team?

I tend to agree that given a legitimate/normal training camp Cam would earn the starting job over Silver Platter Sam...

...then again it was clear TB5 would have done the same but S.P.S.'s fragile psyche wouldn't allow for some healthy competition 🤦‍♂️🤣

Had nothing to do with Sam, and he didn't make that choice lol. The team was moving on from Teddy regardless - Darnold though did keep them from drafting a younger QB.  Teddy wasn't gonna be a Panther in 2021 ... It was just a matter of finding the right way for it to happen.

Well those stats are completely disingenuous:

Cam 2020 PASSING stats:

2,657 yards, 8 TDs 10 INTs across 15 games 177 yards/Game

Jimmy G 2021 PASSING stats:

3810 yards, 20 TDs 12 INTs across 15 games 254 yards/game

Cam is nothing more than a redzone threat these days. It is unfortunate, but it is the truth.

Cam's first job as a QB is to throw the Football. He is not as good at that as he once was. Truth be told he hasn't been great at it since 2015.

We are at that point in a relationship where we have broken up, gotten back together, know there is no future between us, but still love each other so much that we don't want to let go... Even though we both know it's not going to work.

It's time to move on.

2020 Cam - 368 Pass attempts, 7.2 Y/A with Byrd, Meyers, whoever their TE was.

2021 Jimmy G - 441 Pass attempt, 8.6 Y/A with Deebo, Aiyuk, and Kittle.

Also, Cam's 9 TDs in his first 5 games this year was top third of the league for QB scoring during that span.

That being said, I would rather not him come back for both parties sake. Best case scenario is Rhule sets aside his petty agenda against him and Cam balls out, helps save Ratt's job, and we lose draft position.

Poor decision.

Should have kept TB5 around and forced Sam to compete for the job instead of handing it to him on a Silver Platter…

…competition has a way of sharpening skills — Sam needed that.

I agree with the stance, but I think that is on Rhule, not on Darnold. Frankly the problem is that this staff doesn't recognize the value of NFL experience... Just look at who rhules initial coaches were. No surprise he didn't see the value of bringing in another vet to push Darnold

Is this that numbers conspiracy guy?

Could be. That guy had a weird Cam fetish too.

Oh Jeez, I just looked up OP's IP.

It all makes sense now.

Who we thought it was?

As to Newton, this is from Darin Gantt's latest "Ask the Old Guy" mailbag (link)

So my question is about Cam Newton as depth. Am I right? No one is going to give him starter money? And that he'd rather get good backup money here than elsewhere? And that if Darnold holds onto most QB snaps, Cam's foot seems well enough that he still has the physical tools to learn other positions? If Taysom Hill has contributed at FB, TE, LB, couldn't Cam do at least as well in surprise or emergency Swiss Army duty? Would he or the coaches be interested in giving it a serious look?

It's an interesting theory. The problem is how to put it into practice.

I think Dean's right that there probably won't be a huge demand for Newton as a starter, with the way his year in New England went, and his passing here in 2021 (other than the Washington game).

And he's already said he'd be willing to be a backup somewhere, as long as there's winning involved. Can that be here? That's to be determined.

I'm starting to think that late-stage Cam Newton is a luxury item, a player you add on when everything else is functional, and he brings a new element. They may not be there right now.

Cam was the Franchise guy here. He is no longer playing at that level (whatever the reasons). Can he return to form? Maybe but probably not here. If I had to choose between Cam and Darnold. Cam all day. IF I have other options...maybe I would try a rookie or another veteran to push out Darnold. Cam is not the passer he once ways IMO. Stats seem to back that up (besides Olsen who did he have to throw to in 2015 anyway). If we bring him in as a starting QB and battering ram then he will likely not last the season (although maybe he'd take some licks off of CMC and vice-versa).

IMO We should let Cam go and wish him success somewhere else (hopefully not in the NFC South).

    • You joke, but it can always be worse. He might walk with a limp or need assistance. Different sport, but Lonzo Ball couldn't even walk up steps a year after his injury.
    • I mean... a lot of the information that could've helped set better expectations has always been out there: There was no RB on the team under contract for the 2025 - 2026 season except for Miles Sanders. The team did not have a second round pick going into the 2025 season due to the trade for Young. Chuba's extension did not happen until the beginning of November. Jonathon Brooks was the clear RB1 in the class with a massive gap between RB1 & RB2. Example: Dane Brugler had Brooks as RB1, overall #48; Blake Corum was RB2, #81 overall. The Giants held pick #47 and had just lost Saquon Barkley to the Eagles in free agency. They were going to take Brooks had the Panthers not jumped in front of them. So if we're framing things with that context: Chuba was expected to be RB1 Miles (at the time) was RB2 Brooks was essentially RB3, stashed for rehab in 2024 with a long runway. The original injury occurred Nov 2023 while the re-injury occurred December 2024. That is right in the high-risk window for recurrence, especially in explosive athletes. The fact that it also happened on a non-contact play suggests possible biomechanical issues such as muscle imbalance, rather than a failed surgery (or bad decision-making).   NFL teams invest heavily in medically vetting prospects. If there had been a clear red flag in imaging or recovery markers, the team is going to find it. This sucks and the Panthers have sucked, yes, but this wasn't blind optimism or malpractice by the front office. It was a calculated decision based on the roster, draft capital, positional scarcity, etc.
    • Yep, but they can all rotate with Brown, Brown and Robinson (sounds like a law firm). Can't continue to have Derrick Brown out there for 90+ percent of the defensive snaps. An injury was bound to happen.
