Panthers likely drafting a QB

I can't see us trading up for Willis, Corral, Ridder or Howell.  I think all of those guys go in the top half of the 2nd and would cost too much to get up there.  NYG, ATL, SEA, DET, HOU, WAS, TB, and NO all might be eyeing QB and all have picks in the top half of the 2nd.

Strong might drop into the 4th.  A small move up using a 5th might get him, but he did not come in for a visit so I doubt he's in play.

It seems most likely that Zappe will be there when we pick at 137.  I think we grab him.

Give me a scenario where we can trade into the 2nd?

Before I read this thread, I think they will package picks from this year (4,5) and throw in a 2023 second rounder to move up into the back of the second if a top QB is there---Howell, Corral, or Willis.

If I am not mistaken, they never brought in Strong for a visit.  Wouldn't that be ironic in round 3?

Again, Fitt has now said 2x emphatically that the 1 and 2 from next year are completely off limits.

Also FWIW Brugler has the rest of the qbs all gone by pick 47.  https://theathletic.com/3281017/2022/04/29/nfl-mock-draft-dane-brugler-rounds-2-3/

That's what I thought too but given that crazy run on WRs yesterday and multiple major trades for vet WRs I think he my have more value than I would've thought. There are still contenders like GB and KC who are borderline desperate at WR.

If we could move up by moving Robbie and a mid round for a chance at Sam Howell I would do without a second thought.

I'm going to assume you mis-read my post.  I can't think of a scenario.  That's why I said I can't see us trading up.

We may be able to move up a little in the 4th for Strong if he is there.  But I think the likely bet is staying put and selecting Zappe.

Maybe--but they do not want to trade for Baker, and there is a rumor that GM's are prone to lying this time of year.

In my mind, pick 50 is where the "elite" QBs (Willis, Howell, Corral) will be gone.

I think Willis could go to the Giants with their second rounder--just a hunch--or Tennessee will grab him.

No I got it I was just piggy backing on your post on what might potentially get us there?  I totally agree with you

SMH. I don’t know why you guys are so optimistic about this. With pick 137 as our best pick, a QB in the 2nd basically means we lose our 2023 draft pick and that should be a non-starter. There’s an almost certainty that the QB we could get with next year’s first is a better talent than a QB we trade it for this year.

Untrue. Trading into the 2nd and giving up a 1st is something that only Hurney does.

Here is what I think the discussion is today:

"Is there a QB left on the board that we feel we can build around?"

  • If the answer is "No"--do nothing.
  • If the answer is "Yes"---you go get him in round 2, even if it is an economics decision only.

Lemme splain:

Baker would cost $19m for 2022 and if he plays well, $100m for the next 3 seasons.  In other words, a successful Baker would cost the team $120 over 4 years--approx. $30m per year.  (not getting into the diva baggage he'd bring).

Howell (for example) would cost around $19m for four years.  That is less than $5m per season over 4 years.

So if you are worried about the "cost" of trading up, you need to consider the cost of NOT trading up.

Looking at the numbers on Robbie Anderson - He could potentially be very valuable to someone with a second.  I think I have this right.   If we traded him, we'd have to eat an extra 8-9 million on top of the 10m that was already counting against the cap.  And we'd need to replace him with someone decent.  But the recipient would have a decent vet WR with a 2022 salary of only 1m.

I know we all are sick of Anderson and think he sucks, but I don't believe other teams feel the same.  I think GB could possibly give us 53 for Robbie and his 2022 salary of 1m or so.

I'm sure I have some cap-stalkers out there that will correct me if I'm wrong on this.

    • They made sure to not give him any competition at QB with that lame ass UDFA selection. I swear they pick the tallest shittiest qb's in camp to make it look like height is not the problem lol
    • Emergency QB, QB sneak? Wildcat? Cool high school footage either way
