Report: Panthers staff not all on same page about acquiring Browns QB Baker Mayfield

SMH, you said she never said something was close and she said it could happen in two weeks. I can’t help you anymore. WTF was she right about if she can caveat every statement. We could win the SB and we could also win as few as 0 games. Look at me, I’m right.

Read almost every article by a reporter and you get that. That’s as close to sticking their neck on the line as it gets. I mean one of the reporters he mentioned earlier as proving Mary Kay’s point about our supposed team divide on Mayfield is someone he said also said the trade could happen right after he said that there was mutual disinterest.

The article posted for this thread was a puff piece again mentioning our cap space as if that means we’re interested, mentioned that Baker won’t be released so don’t try to wait and that the Panthers were interested but have a divide in the team, i.e. maybe we will be in the hunt still. That wreaks of a team mouthpiece trying to drum up interest and of course our guys fall hook line and sinker saying Rhule must be the one on Mayfield’s jock only be thwarted by the amazing McAdoo. It’s laughable at this point. I await the we’re still in on Jimmy G who is absolutely not going to be a cap casualty so get your trades ready Matt Rhule since even if the owner says you have a longer leash, you can’t possibly want Corral to do well.

Man, I really want to see roaming the sidelines in 2023 just for the show in here.

What exactly do you expect them to do? 😕

You want them to make stone cold, lead pipe lock predictions? Why? Just so a team or a player or an agent can change their mind?

(that happens pretty regularly in the real world, ya know)

Sorry to disappoint you but beat writers and analysts can't foresee the future. All they can do is report what they know right now. Not sure why that's a problem, but apparently it's a big deal.

For me though, I say if something might or might not happen, why not just say that?

I think you are overreacting a bit. The article isn't anything more than speculation based on some sources she probably has and filling in some blanks. Also, it isn't the first source to mention this potential move nor the difference of opinion on Baker.

I mean....none of this is at all outlandish or remotely not believeable. It's mostly outdated after the draft, I would say.

Also, there really isn't a real benefit to the Browns for her to spread this information. It's not going to make the Panthers more likely to make this trade. So, the "team mouthpiece" angle doesn't really seem to fit this specific scenario.

It's much ado about nothing. I have no doubt there isn't consensus opinion on Baker in our FO and coaching staff. I have no doubt that we have contacted the Browns about Baker and may indeed still do so in the future. For better or worse, Fitterer seems extremely active in keeping tabs on other teams and talking about various players/deals.

It's not really anything other than some offseason conversation banter. That's pretty much it.

I am pretty sure had we fired Rhule this past offseason(which we should have) and McAdoo was the hire, the bulk of this board would be up in arms about how we made another stupid hire.

Well yeah of course. McAdoo as a head coach hire should and would be evaluated completely differently than McAdoo as an OC hire.

99% of the board wanted Ron Rivera fired as our coach but I’m pretty sure that same 99% of the board would have loved seeing Rivera as our DC instead.

Now being reported that the browns expect Watson to be suspended the entire 2022 season.  Baker may as well stay there, play out the season as the starter, and hope he has a good enough year to land a major contract in the off-season.

I think Baker likely holds out in that scenario. I would imagine that is an irreparable rift.

I just don’t see how holding out does him any good.  He’d lose 18M and any shot at a long term deal next year

Is his contract guaranteed?

If so, he gets to send a massive "FU" to the Browns for replacing him.

It's a rookie deal, that money is guaranteed.

They could try to take it from him but it really wouldn't matter. Still counts against the cap.

I also think the Browns have basically already moved on. I don't think they are interested in a malcontent QB torpedoing their season.

I'd forgotten about that.

And yeah, reports are they have zero interest in playing him.

All the stuff that is coming out. Would be hilarious if he is outright banned from the league.
He should be, but he won’t.

I haven't seen what the latest allegations against Watson are, but his defense team apparently responded pretty angrily.

23rd suit now filed w/ the attorney advising a 24th will be coming.

    • We agree here dawg. I'd love for Bryce to succeed as would all huddlers. I have not seen a single huddler hate Bryce for anything other than his play on the field / potential / skillset. He hasn't gotten any of the irrational hate having nothing to do with football that Cam got. And yeah I understood going into this season with Bryce again as there weren't a ton of options, but man we missed the fuging mark on upgrading at backup QB with someone who could actually push Bryce. Bryce had zero pressure on him with a 100% washed up Dalton being the only other NFL caliber QB in the system. That absolutely needs to change this offseason. Ideally with an actual starter upgrade but that seems extremely unlikely due to not having many FA options and a bad draft. But at the very least with someone like you mentioned, young/upside and/or day 3 pick in the draft.   Another note, we have a top paid and top performing OL, great young talent at WR incl. likely OROY, great RB group, average all around TE group, offensive coach with creativity in the system and good play designs (poor situational playcalling but still I put out current offensive coaching staff over Shula who held Cam back for instance). Not the absolute best situation for a QB to be in, but still a very good situation around him. And yet we have a bottom 8 offense (6th lowest points scored). Imagine taking a victory lap for a QB leading his team to the 6th lowest points scored in the league and the 22nd highest passer rating (despite being asked to do less than many other QBs; i.e. Bo Nix who isn't great either and has a slightly lower passer rating but Sean Payton actually lets him try to throw the ball deep and has him throw significantly more than Bryce). Crazy
    • similar to Atlanta and the NHL.  Atlanta has lost two NHL teams (and lost a minor leaguer).  Now there's another coalition pulling together another proposal for Atlanta to get an NHL expansion. While I'd like hockey to be back in Atlanta 'cause hockey is fun, I am skeptical that it'll happen based on previous teams' experience here alternatively: similar to Atlanta hosting a Major Tennis Tournament in advance of the US Open every mid/late summer.  Aside from the fact that Atlanta is said to be the country's largest Tennis playing city (with both USTA and ALTA, along with a number of side leagues) - playing tennis outdoors in Atlanta summer is miserable *and* they had difficulty attracting players... ticket sales were not good. So the Atlanta Open closed after 14 years.  They just couldn't make it happen, even if for all intents it appears to be massive tennis interest in the surrounding area.
    • So I saw where Luke was doing that show parallel to the game. Whatever it was, statcast something something, knew it would be a good watch. I don’t get ESPN any more but that would be one of the about few things I would watch outside of games.     He doesn’t fool around on the radio broadcast.
