The drafting was Steve Keim, not Wilks.

And for the record, Wilks QB Coach was Byron Leftwich.

The D royally sucked too, Scot.   Meanwhile even Bradford had the worst performance of his career for Wilks.   The team was 8-8 the year before.  Wilks took an 8 win team and turned it into a 3 win team.  Kiem has been there 13 years.  Kiems absolute WORST year was the only year Wilks was HC.

Any way you slice it, we replaced a 5 win HC with a 3 win HC.

Wilks may turn it around, and unlike some people, I don't decide if I'm rooting for the Panthers depending on whether or not my guy is the HC.  Your just being transparent in your selective excuses.

It was his first year as a head coach.

Hell, I didn't even criticize Rhule for his first year.

My friends, we are here. We wanted hope...we wanted to talk about the future instead of the failed past
which miserably seemed destined to repeat itself every week.

2 admissions....I am a homer and I am an optimist. But admit it...we all want to be here. I will get the
first bold prediction out of the way...the Panthers will beat the Rams this Sunday.

Wilks. So word was Tepper wanted an experienced HC for the next hire. Check. Failed??..Well, he only
got 1 season in Arizona. Gee...how many times does that happen? I am sure there is a little motivation
there.

And.....how did he get on this staff in the first place? I cannot imagine that Rhule went out looking for
previous head coaches who might replace him. Wilks was picked by someone else....so curious about
who that was and obviously convinced Tepper forced the issue.

Wilks seems like the anti Rhule. Not saying that Rhule was a bad guy...just a fish out of water. No doubt
he wanted to succeed and meant well.

Right off the bat Wilks fires 2 [Rhule] coaches. Forget about brass balls....he has real balls...not
arrogance but confidence in his vision.

We all loved the Wilks press conference. Not hype...just real. He is business, straight forward, and if you
look closely, there is some affection there. OMG...we have someone who understands the heritage of this
franchise. This is important...this is our soul. It gives the team meaning. Again, it means something to be
a Panther. It means playing with a purpose. We did not need a damn brand. We had something more
meaningful than that and thankfully we just got it it back.

I cannot imagine that there is anyone who does not hope that this is the right place and the right time for
Steve Wilks. What a story...hometown West Charlotte guy. Has paid his dues and although the Arizona
experience was painful and ugly...seems like a guy that would learn from that.

Wilks has a big challenge with the offense. I hope he can have a positive influence there. It was
encouraging to see him spending time with McAdoo. QB situation...oh dear...but...a fresh perspective
could not hurt. Offense please.....just stay on the field a little longer. Walker.....please please play a decent
game.

Bottom line....no surprise....I am hoping Wilks can turn things around and be the coach of the future. I
know odds are against that but that does not seem to concern him. One of the reasons I like him...he says
it is not about him.
Wilks seems like the kind of guy that will really inspire players....and they will respect him and give their
all for. Most importantly, Wilks is a Panther. He will not let the team forget who we are.
I bet there are a lot of people out there who think the Panthers are a mess. Well, for the first time in years,
I think we are not.

I also think moving forward this team will surprise people. First up is the Rams. I will be watching on
Sunday.

GO PANTHERS. KEEP POUNDING!!

GREAT POST

I too am an eternal optimist, so I go into Sunday's game hoping we beat them.  I think it's possible.

I think what is more important is how we actually play.  I think Wilks will have our players coming out to punch LA Rams in the mouth.  Hit them hard and make a statement.  Carolina is not going to just roll over and give you anything.

If we win it will be a glorious day, if we lose and play a good game than there will be optimism for the remainder of the season.

I will never focus on draft picks until we are mathematically eliminated.  EVER

i smoked a cigar with steve wilks a few years back. extremely straight-forward, no nonsense, no bullshit guy. no car salesman act, no tv preacher schmooze. and he doesn't strike me as the type to try to install a goofy college brand with a bunch of thirty year old millionaires.

i am very optimistic

I feel like Wilkes is being slighted for having to take over this mess and it might be an albatross for him.  I hope it is not the case.  I only hope that evaluators dont expect too much and he can exceed.  Strikes me as a good coach/person and I believe he deserves a legitimate shot and so far it has not worked out for him.

It's a legit sh-t sandwich. Most interim jobs are.

You're coaching a roster you had no say in building with a staff you didn't choose using schemes you didn't decide on. Throw in that the guy who was in charge of setting up what you now have to work with was so bad at his job that he got fired midseason.

Yikes 😬

As said, I hope the best for him but it's gonna be a lot to ask.

The D is top half of the league.  The ST are kicking ass.

The line has been holding and CMC is healthy.  The problem has been the O, specifically QB play.   If PJ comes in and plays smart, he'll outplay Baker and we could upset some teams.

I'm not as hopeful but in terms of circumstances for a debut victory for Wilks, there is enough there. We've stayed in games the first half and frankly, the Rams are just not that good. Even a loss but where the offense shows signs of competence is a step in the right direction.

If we get our doors blown off early, though, yikes.

Making this team look competent would be a success for Wilkes. That doesn't mean he has to have a winning record. Given the situation correcting the course is a win.

It's really odd how much you defended Rhule but attack Wilkes.

Posting that you're tired of the Rhule-bitching is not defending Rhule.  Hoping the team wins is not defending Rhule.  I have posted many times that Rhule sucked and that only wins will change that narrative.  He didn't win.  The closest  to defending Rhule was when people were saying that RR walked into the same situation Rhule did.  RR didn't, and it wasn't even close.

I did say there were a lot of people who hated Rhule.  There are.  Some have even admitted it.

As for the moment the D and ST already look competent, yet that is where Wilks made his staff changes.

The problem is the O, particularly QB play.     He could have fired McAdoo and elevated someone on the O positional staff.  We have some talented people there.  He didn't.

Wilks has a commanding presence and the players love him.  So hopefully he can squeeze out some wins.

This team winning a few games is a horrible thing to hope for. Go watch the the end of 2018 where the Allen lead Panthers fought tooth and nail to defeat the Saints’ third stringers and waterboys to essentially drop 6 spots in the draft or whatever if that kind of weird poo excites you.

The moral victories are redundant, why do people need them over and over? That isn’t hope, it’s meaningless. The top pick in a qb heavy class is hope.

Maybe even more importantly, having that top pick is going to be a factor in luring the best coaching prospects as possible. Wilks is NOT it.

    • They traded away their 1st next year also to get James Pearce Jr. Really hope this blows up in the Falcons face. I don't care how it happens, I just want to win the division this year. Zero sympathy for other team's issues. And our pass rush looks like it needs all the help it can get.
    • I would have released him this season, tbh and worked with Christensen out there.
    • 10/10. We're due for some good luck, and I think this team is much better than what we've had the last 2 seasons. Defensive injuries could derail us b/c our depth there is still questionable. Still worried about the pass rush getting pressure without blitzing. Pleasantly surprised by the secondary and run defense.  Dan Morgan has done a lot to resurrect this roster from the deplorable position Fitterer left it in by showing some scouting chops with hitting on these guys drafted in the later rounds or UDFAs. Lathan Ransom & Corey Thornton both look like they fit this scheme and the NFL isn't too big for them.  I'm as excited for the rookie trifecta of T-Mac, Scourton, and Princely as I can remember. On paper, this offense is the most talented since 2021, maybe 2017, and maybe 2015. None of that means this team will produce any better, but this team has offensive talent & depth like we have rarely had in team history. If you don't believe me, go Google it. We've had some awful offensive collections overall in many years, to varying degrees mitigated by superstar talents like Steve Smith, Christian Mccaffrey, or Cam Newton.  I honestly think the collective offensive talent in 2025 may be better, but Cam was so otherworldly in 2015 & 2017 that he covered any flaws. Seriously, though, Cam doesnt get enough love for 2017. I think that may have been his best season. In general, Cam doesn't get enough respect IMHO. Both in college and in the NFL, Cam took teams that without him would have had no chance and won. True definition of a guy who elevated his team. To be clear, I am in no way am I saying this team will be better than 2017 or 2015. My point is that the offensive talent is there on offense if Bryce can unlock it.  I've been a Bryce supporter, but there are no excuses not to perform with this group. This isn't the disaster we gave him in 2023 or a new scheme like in 2024 where I think he hadn't mentally removed from his rookie season to start. I dont know how you couldnt be excited about that. And we still compete in a division that isn't insurmountable. I got got in 2023 like most of us in buying into the team propaganda, but in general, I think I'm pretty realistic about the team. I knew in my heart we would be bad last year. I wasnt expecting the defense to be that bad or Bryce to start off that poorly, but I had no expectations whatsoever for making the playoffs. And I genuinely think we will be competitive all year this season. I think we win 8-9 games and compete for the division. I think the ceiling is 11 wins, and the floor is 7. The good news is after next week, we will all be proven right or proven wrong. Keep Pounding!
