A look at head coach situations of five teams as 2022 NFL season nears its end

From the article...

Carolina Panthers

Interim coach Steve Wilks has the team in position to win the NFC South if they can complete a sweep of the Bucs today -- a remarkable feat considering Carolina opened the season with a head coach who's now a Cornhusker, a quarterback who's now a Ram and a star running back who's now a 49er. After a 1-4 start under ex-head coach Matt Rhule, they're 5-5 under Wilks.

The turnaround has positioned Wilks, 53, as a strong candidate for the full-time job. He's well-regarded and liked within the building. However, Carolina still intends to go through a full search process that also includes other in-demand candidates. Owner David Tepper's top priorities have been solidifying the quarterback position and the offense, so expect the Panthers to interview all of the rising offensive gurus. If Wilks is going to get the job, he'll need to sell his plan for that side of the ball, too. Tepper also respects Wilks' leadership traits, which is a huge part of the job.

Key phrase here: "all of the rising offensive gurus".

We know that list includes Johnson and Steichen, but who else would fit that criteria?

Shane Waldron & Ken Dorsey would be potential adds.  Unsure if Leftwich is perceived as a rising guru, but he could get considered by teams with openings.

Leftwich struggled this year without Arians. He may get some interviews but I’d be surprised if anyone gives him the job.

I'd tend to agree.

I'd say Waldron is quietly a top candidate from the ever growing McVay tree.

Steichen stemming from the old McCoy SD staff with Reich/ & Sirianni

Ryans is this year's Shanahan guy

Ben Johnson I still find interesting being a Mike Sherman pupil with his former counterparts in Zach Taylor & Dan Campbell. Both now HCs.

Harbaugh is self-explanatory, and not a bad option one bit.

Have some REALLY interesting guys out there.

I just hope we do our do diligence and don't fixate like we did last time. I also hope we have football knowledgeable people involved that can cut through any potential BS.

Our last two searches took very different paths.

For the GM search, they seemed to be interviewing everybody they could find.

Of course the coaching search ended quickly because Hurney and Tepper got hoodwinked by Matt Rhule.

Yep, if Tepper is less fixated and has some internal support to assist (which he did admit to wanting w/the new search after firing Rhule, said in that presser he wanted some advisors this time around), I'll trust the process because that's all we can really do at day's end.

Just happy it seems like a good field of candidates.

I mentioned this on Twitter, but is Wilks really wants to sell the offensive side of his plan, he should reach out to Todd Monken and see what it would take to get him to leave Georgia. They have history together being coordinators in Cleveland, so it might make some sense...

Staffing questions are typically part of the interview process.

I thought about this too until I looked at offenses under Monken. They were very pass heavy in the NFL and not exactly what Wilks has been trying to do. I don’t think he ever had a 800 yard rusher. Also check out the Jags when he was their WRs coach a few years back. It was rough.

I wouldn’t be surprised if he kept Ben and had Ben mold his playbook into what he wanted. I think Freddie Kitchens and (God help me) Mike Shula are options.
