What te that was drafted in the first in the last 5ish years would do that?

Picking a te at #9 would just be another historically bad franchise move.

My whole point was there ARE tight ends worthy of a first round selection. Yes, it's more risky than other positions. But, if you nail the pick it's worth it.

Showing how few tight ends chosen in the first round are worth it would prove my point they weren't valued appropriately.

I addressed your first sentence above. For me, there's more wiggle room to first round value than 'has to be a Kelce or Kittle.'

Re: Pitts...I think one of the biggest issues the NFL scouts have drafting TEs in the 1st is they fall in love with the flashy receiving threats. They should be looking for the savvy, well-rounded TEs who utlilize head fakes well and find soft spots in zones. It's not a perfect metaphor, but it's similar to NBA teams prioritizing a long center 'prototype' who can only dunk over the crafty, below the rim guys who offer more production.

You are missing the point.  Currently in the nfl there are only 2 guys with careers that if you did a redraft they go in the first.  2.  That's it.  Tight ends don't hold first round value and they sure as fug don't hold top 10 value

I disagree. The two you mention would be drafted in the top 10, and plenty more would be re-drafted in the first round of their respective drafts.

I'm not necessarily saying they have to be a Kelce or Kittle to draft in the first round. You have to ask what helps our team next year and over the next four to five. A top notch tight end, if chosen correctly, upgrades one of our biggest weaknesses and makes things easier on the QB we bring in this year or next. That allows for a little more wiggle room than just top 3-5 in the league or bust, imo.

The issue is that you can get a decent tight end that can do what you are describing in the 2nd to 4th rounds. So....why spend a top 10 pick on that guy?

If you want a Kittle or Kelce, that is worth a top 10 pick. But....you better hope he is that guy.

Ultimately this is about drafting way, way, way outside of positional value. The only time that ever really makes sense is for a truly elite, HOF caliber player.

Positional value exists for a reason....it's literally set by the current value in the NFL.

I quickly googled re-draft articles from 2017-2019. There were 5 TEs taken in the first round of those re-drafts. George Kittle, Evan Engram, Noah Fant, TJ Hockenson, and Irv Smith was borderline first.

According to that, on average there are 1-2 TEs each draft worthy of a first round selection. Sure, that will vary from year to year and it may be closer to 1 each draft. I agree with kungfoo that you better nail that pick.

Fant and Engram were 1st round redrafts? Must have been later in the first and not top 10.  If we trade down I'm ok with Mayer depending on how far down we are.  Mayer in the top 10 seems was overvalued IMO.

Washington reminds me of Ian Thomas.. a huge monster of a man but there is no way he can run the route tree Olsen could run and the necessary shifty/speed to create separation from NFL CBs and LBs..

Musgrave or Kincaid are guys I think we can get with one of our 2nd rounders or even LaPorta or Latu in the 3rd..

I think they are not the same at all. Washington is honestly a good run blocker that has a freakish build and could probably serve as a 6th lineman/pass option in addition to being TE.

Washington is still pretty raw, but Ian Thomas was drafted solely for being an athletic TE. He honestly was good at nothing else, and that point has been proven (although I guess he has improved some at blocking).

The TE from South Dakota St. is another TE that could be worth a look

Pitts was the greatest prospect at the position ever and he hasnt done poo for 2 years.

What???

The dude had a 1,000 yards receiving his rookie year with a not very good Matt Ryan and had to fight through injuries and possibly worse QBs that us this year.

We have to come away with MINIMUM a vertical threat TE, WR and RB on the offensive side.  Not sexy but, DE, ILB and FS on the defensive side.  That's about the entire draft.  The very reason I want to TRADE BACK a time or two to pick up 2-3 more picks.  We simply do not have enough to fill what we need.  Still should get another LB (super thin now), slot WR, IOL and possibly a nickle corner.

Can't get all that in 7 picks.

As far as RB goes we could just resign Foreman if he will take a normal market value deal and we have Hubbard as well. Those two are capable then maybe a 3rd option could be from anywhere

Yeah I don't think we need to do anything crazy with regards to the RB position. Hell Foreman was languishing on the bench, didn't get any real burn until week 7 and nearly put up 1,000 yards. Between Foreman, Hubbard, and Blackshear collectively, they put up 1,457 rushing yards (4.5 ypc) and 10 TDs. If you can re-sign Foreman on a cheap shorter-term deal, that's good enough.
