Rumored Payton connection: Jeff Ireland

From USA Today's Saints writer John Sigler, regarding the Cardinals hire of Monti Ossenfort as GM...

And the Cardinals never so much as met with Payton’s presumed preferences for the job — Saints personnel executives like Jeff Ireland and Khai Harley, and their former scouting director Ryan Pace. New Orleans won’t allow Payton to bring Ireland or Harley with him as lateral moves, so it seems they won’t have an inroad to Arizona with Ossenfort taking over.

Similar speculation from other sources suggested that the Cardinals hiring a "non-Payton approved" GM might lessen their chances of getting Payton.

Jeff Ireland would certainly make sense as someone who could come along with Payton to do the legwork under a Payton "full control" umbrella.

Ireland interviewed for the Panthers GM job last time around but didn't make it past the first round.

Is there an actual quote from Payton claiming he’s got to have full control at whatever job he takes next?

He was a consultant with the Saints for a few years before taking an official job with them. He's done okay with their drafts.

He'd be subservient to Payton in this role of course since Payton wants final say.

I think my issue with him, if memory serves me correctly, was his time with the Dolphins.  Wasn't he the guy that asked Dez Bryant if his mother was a prostitute and his father was her pimp?  And if that was him, I don't think he had too hot of a tenure in Miami from a success standpoint either.

I mean, the Saints are only like $58 million over the cap for next season right now. Good management and accounting there.

That team sold their souls to a Voudoun mambo to get that Super Bowl ring and since then it has been a long slow stroll down to the urine soaked alleys lining Bourbon Street. How about we stay out of that and keep our hand on our wallet until we get out of that neighborhood?

    • No, I'm starved for contention. If you can't see that and keep wanting to turn things like this back around on T-Mac, then you're just either being purposefully obtuse, or is a fan who is happy having 5-6 win seasons just because we're so used to the 3-4 win seasons and you like "just being better"
    • Chiefs had zero penalties last night
    • You mean the guy who took over a franchise that hadn't had a losing season in the previous 4 seasons... who proceeded to get his team into the playoffs in 3 of his first 4 seasons, only to win 2 games in said playoffs, to then go on to having a 54-74 career record and never won another playoff game after those first two? Who then after being fired from that job, took over a team that was 30-18 in the 3 seasons before he got the job, got into the playoffs that first season, lost their first postseasons game, and then went on to have a 6-26 record over the next 2 seasons? You're literally proving my point by bringing up someone who's claim to fame is that quote. If you just play to win the game, you're never going to be a successful franchise.  You need to play to win the game while ALSO working to make your players better.  Having the former without the latter is a picture perfect recipe to become a stagnant franchise. That's how you work towards being a winning franchise who can contend in the postseason.  And sure, having a stagnant franchise that makes the playoffs every other season is better than what we currently are, but that's not what I strive for with our Panthers, I want to actually contend for championships in my lifetime.
