Carr Watch

Eric Edholm's comments on the Panthers as a landing spot for Carr...

The Panthers made runs at some of the top available quarterbacks last offseason before settling on drafting Matt Corral in Round 3 and trading for Baker Mayfield in July. Neither worked out in the short term, as Corral suffered a season-ending injury, and Mayfield struggled before being cut and ending up with the Rams.

Now they might be set to hit restart at the position again this offseason. New head coach Frank Reich certainly will have a say in which direction the team heads there, as could new QB coach Josh McCown, but neither of them, nor the other offensive coaches Reich has added to his staff, have strong connections to Carr.

The Panthers also own the No. 9 overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft and could use that to select a new passer. They also could re-sign Sam Darnold, as an inexpensive free-agent option who played better for Carolina down the stretch, as well as move forward with Corral. Then again, the Panthers’ interest in Carr could also be tied to the fact that the division-rival Saints are clearly kicking his tires. The NFC South’s quarterback situation appears a bit lean now that Tom Brady's retired, leaving all four teams seemingly looking for help at the position.

This is a young team with some foundational talent around which to build, and the Panthers could end up with six 2023 draft picks in the top 150 overall, thanks to the Christian McCaffrey trade. So while drafting a young quarterback can’t be dismissed at all, going the veteran route also has to be on the table.

Wouldn't that be the role Josh McCown plays in our plans? If we go Levis or Richardson we will need a good mentor. A McCown as a coach and someone like Jacoby B to start the year.

Jacoby Brissett is a definite possibility.

And as much as folks won't like it, so is Sam Darnold.

Saints. Game. It is likely people have selected memory and refuse to acknowledge a game where Darnold showed 100 percent why he is a terrible QB.
If Darnold is resigned by us the it better be because we had a clear plan and he will either A) Never start unless he has to, a backup, or B) Starts in the very story term, like 4 games max, then we start the rookie.
Darnolds expiration is 4 games and then he falls apart.

I think they're the most likely options.

If either is signed then a QB will definitely be drafted this season.

That's why I think we won't know until after the draft what direction they will go. They will not want to tip their hand either way.

Say for instance they sign Carr. That will probably signal that they are not looking to draft a qb in the 1st unless a great prospect falls in their lap.

If they sign Brissett or someone like Sam for instance that likely means they are looking to be players for a qb in the first and will be looking to trade up.

It's going to be a poker game until draft night and we have some aces in the building.

Reading the tea leaves

It just seems as though we are preparing to go with a young QB, and there must be a guy or two in this draft they like.  Here is my thinking (with my brain):

1. The staff is built around developing a QB

2. The CMC trade was to give them the coins to move up in the draft.

3. With Next year's expected cap situation, trading a first rounder this year (if needed) would not be as big a hit in 2024 as it may have in other years.

4. Fitterer likes the idea of having a starting QB on a rookie deal for 4-5 years.

5.  While he had some success, acquiring retreads at QB has not been the long term solution in Reich's case.

I think the players they like for this offense:  Stroud, Levis.  I am not sure Young is the guy, and he could fall as a result of his not being tall enough to ride 50% of the rides at Carowinds.  If AR is there at 9 and they have not moved, I think they could go after him, but I expect him to be scrutinized by scouts / GMs by April and he will drop to the end of Round 1.

If I were a free agent I would go visit teams in reverse interest level to see what I was leaving on the table elsewhere. If my visit with my favorite at the start of the process goes well, I can sign that day without hesitation. If it goes poorly, my plan isn’t ruined by having laser focused on a team with ideological differences. I would then move on to my favorite destination from the visits. In my experience, the betting line on things like this starting so heavily in our favor means something. The casino doesn’t give away free money. Let him make the rounds.

FYI: Rapoport says the Panthers do have interest and Carr may visit with us down the line.

The belief Is that Carr will take his time making a decision on where he plays.

He pretty much has until the legal tampering period begins. Right now, he's the only QB on the market and available. Once free agency begins, he loses whatever advantage he has from the early availability - for whatever that's worth.

I imagine a few people will kick the tires on him, but I'd be a little surprised who, if anyone, pulls the trigger. You'd have to imagine at least some teams going the vet route will want to know about the Aaron Rodgers situation first before making a decision.
