Which is what you would expect from a backup level qb. That's all Sam is. Expecting anything more from him is setting yourself up for disappointment.  I would take him as a backup until they get a chance to upgrade.

not me.

he doesn't fit the criteria for a backup.

for me a backup should either be:

A - A young developmental talent.  That's not Sam Darnold

B - A veteran that knows the scheme and is largely a teacher.  One that has seen it all in the NFL.   And yes, he can be called to start until your young guys are ready.  That's also not Sam Darnold though.  He hasn't seen it all.  He doesn't know the O.  And Sam largely was just a guy with physical tools.  Between the ears is what he lacks and is key for a QB in that role.

if I am going to watch disappointing QB play.  At least let it be from someone that is doing something legit for the young talent.

Yes, I think that Darnold is gone from the Carolinas,  never to return.

it was sort  of sad because he was a good teammate and never complained, no matter what happened.

Nice guy that  just didn't quite have what it took to continue as the Panthers starting QB..

I'm not sure it means he's gone just yet. The available options for vet starter are not that great but Sam does have the advantage of chemistry with the players so that does give him a slight edge.

I suppose stranger things have happened. The Panthers whole QB situation is presently one big puzzle.

I think the coaches are going to be the teachers for the young guy. There's not a sub .500 vet out there that I would use as a mentor for a rookie.  Those days are over unless you already have a vet starter in your system. The only guy that has any experience with these receivers and this team is Sam.  I know you hate the guy but he's a logical choice for a temporary starter/backup for this season.  Unless you would rather sign Carr,  this is most likely the route they end up going for now.

If you look at Darnolds 2022 season it was night and day different from 2021. He moved better in the pocket, avoided pressure and kept looking downfield. His pre and post snap decision making was much improved. He managed games much better and even in the Saints game was able to generate offense at the end to score the winning field goal.  With a competent staff he will only improve so he would be a good pickup if the money is right.

yet his completion % went down and his rate of putting the ball on the ground went up.  That generally doesn't go with a narrative of great improvement.

In fact you could argue it was almost exactly like the 2021 season.  A good 4-5 game start before the wheels predictably fell off.  Repeated pattern.  NFL teams just need a couple games to figure out how a staff is hiding a bad QB.  Because you can only hide Sam Darnold so long in any offense.

Chemistry doesn’t mean anything. He will still turnover the ball like crazy.

You have to prepare yourself for any possibility.  Just reading the tea leaves it looks to be trending in that direction at the moment.

It was exactly 4 games in 2022, while in 2021 it was 3.

Honest question.  What the fug could he have complained about?  Seriously?

Jacoby seems like the most logical choice.  He offers something to a draft pick and Corral.   He knows the O. Also, he has been on and around successful teams and QBs.

He would be my top pick for a vet warm body.

Plus, he wasn't part of the horrific Rhule era.  Which this team needs to be cleansed from.  Sam Darnold is basically the posterboy of it.

Darnold is, to me, such an enigma. He has hall-of-fame level flashes, and then looks like the shape of the football confuses him at others.

The only factors that make me want to consider keeping him around are the fact that he's still so young, that with consistently good coaching maybe he can finally be "unlocked" and reach a pretty high ceiling, and if we could keep him around at a very team-friendly price.

He's very frustrating to evaluate in terms of worth. A part of me thinks we should just wash our hands and let go, but there's tantalizing periods/glimpses that make you wonder what could be. I don't know, lol.
