David Newton's tweet deserves own thread

Huddlers seem to be zeroing in on the David Carr or Sam Darnold parts of David Newton's tweet, but neither one bothers me. It's always been about value as far as I'm concerned.

David Tepper emphasized that we needed to be smarter with our resources. I don't believe that we're going to win any Carr battle based on that alone, and we may not end up with Darnold if the market gets too stupid, but it's all about the money, and I could see Darnold being a better value than Carr in their respective roles (one a starter, and one a bridge starter or legit backup).

All that being said, we are obviously surveying the scrap heap for possible treasure---you know, the "one man's thrash thing, giving serious thought to the draft prospects of course, and keeping Matt Corral in our hearts and minds.

Some may not like the tweet, and hope that Newton is full of poo, but it's actually music to my ears.

And one more thing: Gardner Minshew, come on down!

Thanks for posting this, OP.

The part about going after mid-level QB free agents leaves me cautiously optimistic. Hopefully it means Carr won’t be coming here, and although I don’t want Darnold back at all, if it comes with a rookie QB drafted in the 1st, I’ll deal with it

I haven't had time to listen to the presser, but Rimmer sounds like he's purely speculating.

He is, but that's kinda the point.

Newton's not a reliable source because he has a tendency to interpret things incorrectly.

I never go by what Newton says unless it's corroborated by others.

The part that make me nervous is the "5 year window" talk. I like Derek Carr. I really do. I wouldn't mind signing him. But I don't want to sign Derek Carr to massive 5 year contract with huge guarantees.

I don't think we end up with him.  But I do suspect someone is going to give him exactly that.  Too many desperate, qb needy teams.  (Including us obviously)

I can tell you what I got out of the presser...

1) Both Frank Reich and Scott Fitterer like David Carr. Between the two, Reich sounded more eager and effusive but that's kinda to be expected since it's not his job to worry about what he's getting paid.

2) Fitterer might have tipped his hand a little bit on one thing: If They did sign Derek Carr, they're probably not going to use their first round pick on a quarterback. If they draft a player, the vet would likely be a bridge type.

3) Perhaps most important, those decisions haven't been made yet, but they're being discussed. It could end up going either way.

Throw in this...

That makes me think the Panthers are going to take through this weekend to digest what they saw at the combine, whether or not they believe anyone is worth trading up for and basically what to do at the quarterback position.

Once they call Carr, they could either make him an offer or tell him they're going in a different direction.

    • Been here a while but rarely post and most of them are smartazz. Mostly lurk just so I can sound informed while hanging out drinking beer in my neighbors garage. Amusingly a Huddle level of knowledge kind of makes you a subject matter expert. Thanks for that.
    • That’s similar as saying MVP Cam is the same as rookie Cam because his mechanics didn’t change. We’re talking about production.
    • In 2025 Sam Darnold had over 1k more passing yards than Bryce Young on 1 less pass attempt. Repeat that to yourself several times and let it sink in. I absolutely love it when people come on here and invoke Sam Darnold like some gotcha. Darnold is the physical prototype for what anyone needs in a franchise QB. All the physical tools. Few people thought he would put it all together on the mental side of the position. He used to make some of the worst decisions you would ever see. At times in the past he made up for that with absurd throws and athleticism. But make no mistake whatsoever no matter how you feel about our starting QB. Bryce Young is a completely opposite conundrum. He lacks virtually any and all physical tools and athleticism and his elite processing is really mediocre at best on a good day and horrific on a bad day. These are realities people should have already been addressing instead of quadrupling down in year four.
