  • “It was not the season we had hoped for”
  • First step of the summer is self reflection and see what the team needs to do better. He’ll study and see what they should change.
  • Talked about Mike Budenholzer and Steve Kerr as coaches he wants to study to see how they’ve been doing things
  • Wants to be around for next year but has been around long enough to not be surprised by anything
  • Stressed the increased importance of perimeter players to be able to guard their guy in today’s game; praised Mark Williams and Nick Richards for the team’s improved defense after the All Star break
  • Said JT Thor has been playing hurt but he’s thrilled with what he can be as a key depth piece
  • Players will meet with Mitch Kupchak and Buzz Peterson to talk about the season. Clifford will take more time to develop a plan for the summer.
  • Talked about the importance of having great summers in order to have great seasons
  • Said it’s absolutely important that the Hornets win to keep LaMelo Ball happy. Talked about Ball’s hatred of losing and how he’ll send late night texts apologizing for not playing well and asking how he can be better.
  • The injured players are generally close to being back at 100% for the offseason
  • Praised the players for the team culture

  • It was a rough year”
  • Team has a lot of assets but plans on using cap space to bring back players
  • Excited about the draft pick to supplement a roster he feels is good enough to compete when healthy
  • Players appreciate that Steve Clifford is a straight shooter with everyone and seem to think highly of him as a coach
  • Likes the potential of Mark Williams and Nick Richards; Williams is the favorite to start next season but it all depends on how the summer goes
  • Stressed the importance of building through the draft given the market size; team needs to win more to attract big free agents
  • Praised Greensboro Swarm coach Jordan Surenkamp for living with losses brought about by the emphasis on development of young players when a lot of G League teams have more veteran players leading them to wins
  • Wants to be around a while to see this roster construction out
  • LaMelo needs to get healthy and get stronger. Wants to see him grow into a leadership role as he gets older.

I think an argument could be made that no team needs the number one overall pick more than the Hornets (not that they DESERVE the number one pick) but every other top team at least has a path to relevancy outside the number one pick/recent historic greatness

that being said the NBA fuged us out of AD so this would be an excellent consolation prize. Further with MJ selling the team .... if the draft is rigged now is the time to gift the Hornets a prize

Oh really Cliff you want to study Kerr and Budenholzer to see how they’ve been doing things? You’ve been coaching how long now? Kerr’s been with the Warriors winning championships how long? NOW you want to try to learn from some other coaches? Really? REALLY?

It don’t matter though, our GM wants to use all our money to keep together the 4th worst record team in the league. Probably one of the 2 worst teams in the league but the other teams are at least smart enough to tank.

    • Just looking at this moment in time, rather than holding off until we see something for it, I'd have to give it a B+/A-. We added a lot of players and a lot of potential. We may have reached a bit with our first pick, but the simple move to make it at the end of the first round gave us a shot to make it last a bit longer if he really blossoms here. That was a pretty smart move and had a lot to do with Morgan and Beane's relationship I think.  Picking up an injured running back in the second sounds like a foolish move, but honestly, it's a solid gamble. We know what the floor would be on the pick, that he might never play at a professional level due to that injury. And honestly, that is the floor on any pick you make. The ceiling on the guy could potentially be immense. He was outstanding on a mighty fine team that was pass heavy and he doesn't have a lot of mileage. If that knee heals up completely (and we have a lot of experience with that in Carolina), he could be a massive steal and just what Bryce needs. There are a lot of people harping on our LB pick, but man, I always take it with a grain of salt when folks decry a player's "football intelligence." It's one of those criticisms that is easy to lodge against a young guy, but really hard to quantify. It might be nothing. His reputation for being a hard hitter and instinctual tackler are more important I think. He's going to have a good mentor in Shaq in the LB room and there's an institutional strength in our LB corps that could give him quite a boost. Our TE pick in the fourth may very well be the steal of the draft. I think we're going to see some serious production out of him. I'm hoping for something Olsen-like. He's definitely an upgrade to what we have now. And from there, well, the tea leaves get a little harder to read. I think Morgan did well with the trading and he cast a wide net for positions. We're going to have to see how it all shakes out, but just based on the three days of picks and the work that went into them, it was a good performance, better than I expected.
    • The 5th year option wasn't even considered.  I don't care what Dan says. They traded up because they got wind someone was interested in Legette. Whether that interest was real or made up is unknown.
    • Yeah man, Beane really fuged us for that... *Checks notes* 5th round pick. fug, how will we ever recover?
