Panthers mini camp (Saturday)

Mahomes has great instincts but he's not a game tape and nose in the playbook sort. The Favre comparison fits; I don't consider either one "high football IQ" QBs. They never had to be because they could just force it through with their arm strength. Bryce has to overcome his lack of arm strength with prep and work ethic.

Mahomes is Favre if Favre had Andy Reid as a head coach. They are basically carbon copies of one another. And before you say "interceptions", Mahomes is only like 0.7% better in his TD-INT ratio.

Uuuhhh...no.

Favre always had just general vicinity accuracy and was capable of being wildly inconsistent. People loved the high velocity of his throws, but judgment wise he was easily capable of following up an "OMG" throw with a "WTF" one. Hell, Packer fans cheered when he finally learned to throw one away rather than taking a huge risk.

Mahomes is far more stable. Yes, people rave about his wild "off platform" throws but what's actually most important is that his regular throws are accurate and consistent.

Does Reid's system help? I'm sure it does because it's helped every other quarterback he's coached, but that doesn't mean Mahomes isn't talented.

Go watch games from both, back to back. Or highlights. Or whatever. Favre won three MVP's, back-to-back-to-back. When Mahomes does that, you can @ me.

Mahomes already has 2 Super Bowl wins and didn't try to defraud a state's welfare system.  When Favre does that you can @ me.  Oh and Mahomes is only 27....

Give Mahomes a chance, he still has time to defraud people. As for Super Bowls, there is quite the difference between what Favre was able to do in the 90's versus Mahomes today. Put Favre in today's game, with the guardrails up and a seasoned Andy Reid and you'd get the same result.

Favre is on Mount Rushmore. Mahomes is still on his way to South Dakota.

Mahomes has twice as many Super Bowl victories at age 27.  He has a great TE but not many other weapons on offense this year.  Mahomes is already better than Favre IMO.  He is going to be competing for a Super Bowl as long as he stays healthy every year.  The only stats Favre beats him in are the ones that are cumulative because he has played longer and even considering that Mahomes is tracking to beat every one of them.  I'm sorry if Favre was your childhood hero, but Mahomes is looking like the better QB.

    • Everyone talks about how important it is to draft a QB in round 1 and have the "5th year option" I haven't seen it play out the well over the past several years. The good/great QB' aren't playing the first 5 years under their original deal.  After year 3 or 4 they are getting mammoth extensions. Having Penix take over in year 3 may actually save the Falcons some money over the next 5 seasons. I doubt they'd give him an extension after his first year as a starter if he took over the starting position after the guaranteed portion of Kurt Cousins new deal ends in 2025.   In terms of playing time, Penix 3 years as a starter would be ending with the 5th year of his rookie deal (assuming his option was picked up). The money Penix would be making in year 5 of a rookie contract would be significantly less than the upper echelon 5 year starters are making now.
    • I mean you can see it in his highlights - he has CBs from Yale and Colgate in his hip pocket.  Yes he's making contested catches and moving the chains, but those aren't even P4 CBs and he's struggling to separate.
    • Working for a season under Adam Thielen (another undrafted WR) should be a positive factor.  Some of these issues are correctable.  Many kids from small schools not only lack experience against DI schools, they lack the coaching that develops talent.
