Will Burns sign an extension before Week 1?

It's been known that the Burns camp has been waiting to see what the numbers are for Nick Bosa before finalizing negotiations on an extension with the Panthers.

Bosa is reported to be close to signing a deal of more than $30MM per year.  Depending on how high it goes in the 30s it could impact the negotiations.  My hope is that they could settle somewhere in the $28MM a year range given that Brian Burns is just a notch below Bosa in terms of production and ability.

Thoughts?

Pass. Burns isn’t worth that kind of money. It sucks but gotta let him move on if he wants top end money. If he was a better run stopper maybe. But I’d rather the panthers start taking a canes approach and getting good, high quality players, players bring the key word. Spread the money around so you have a good whole team, not a great one player.

if you are the Carolina Panthers, would you really want to give him a massive deal before you have seen him play a down in the new 3-4 scheme?

It's a gamble.  With his frame/style he might be actually better in the 3-4 especially with Evero coaching him.  Waiting could put us in a corner where he wants even more money.

Once we turned down that Rams deal we all but told Burns he will be resigned/extended and it will be for a large amount of money.  I would imagine we had some idea of what he was wanting before we turned down an offer like that.

I just don't see why a NFL team would gamble on a massive contact......while never seeing him play a down at OLB in the new D.   Everyone isn't going to be the same beast in a different scheme and position.

Make the deal in season if you ask me.

I'm surprised by this take, I think they've seen enough in camp to know he's going to be even better in a 3 - 4.

when we turned that down that offer, we also didn't know we would be moving to Evero's 3-4 scheme.

His skillset fits the 3-4 edge position better, but it's not like we can't just line him back up on the DL if he plays worse in the 3-4 (which I can't see happening).  Evero listed Burns as a top reason he wanted to come here and then proceeded to switch us to his 3-4.  He probably has a better understanding than most on how Burns should look.

Waiting could be a dangerous game, but at the end of the day he is probably going to make a large amount of money regardless.

    • He has attempted 8 shootout goals in his NHL career and made 1. He is among our worst SO guys on the entire roster in terms of career stats.
    • Against Miami, the Panthers were behind by 17 in the 2nd quarter facing a 4th - 5. Young completed a 21 yard pass and they went on to score 7 on that drive. Then in the 4th, down by 4, they faced a 4th - 5 and again, he completed a 17 yard pass and they went onto score a TD for the win. He also accounted for 2 of the 3 TD's.  As I said, he got them in that mess and no doubt, Rico gets credit as well, but missing on either of those 4th down conversions hands the ball over and results in 1 or 2 less TD's giving them a loss. As you said though, that's just a small quibble. The real question is how does the FO see it?  I am guessing they see it as something to build on. I think most peope here see it as a total loss and fully expect the FO to see it that way as well. Time will tell.
    • Kochetkov is just too streaky. TBD if Freddie is doing that too. Freddie is the more reliable goalie over his career. The Bussi kid looks like he could be a solid #2 eventually.  Just need to figure out the #1 guy. Same as almost every year. It's not talent, it's consistency and being able to step up in the playoffs.
