How is he frustrating when he's our best DEFENSIVE PLAYER!

Man do you guys just love to complain about this team. If you feel this way about our best player imagine how you feel about everyone else.smh

'Best' is relative and discussing observations is not 'hate'. At this point 'hater' is just a dumb, overused term.

Kind of reminds me when we overpaid for Charles Johnson. Seemed like it was better to have him than not even at a premium.

CJ was a different situation since he was set to be an FA and Atlanta was desperate for a pass-rusher. The stars (and crappy Hurney structuring) aligned for that CJ contract but while he was a tier below Burns in pass rush effectiveness, he was a more complete player overall because he was stout in the run game. There were far worse contracts out there.

Emotion has no place in negotiations.  When buying a car, a house, etc--you go in with emotions like, "This is the best house EVER!!!!" and you will certainly pay through the nose, only to later realize that you got the house you wanted, but now can't afford the car you want.

Burns was probably waiting for the Bosa deal knowing it would increase his property value, but that does not mean he is worth Bosa money. I am guessing 4 years, $112m.

Figure it will get done today so he can be fully under contract tomorrow. Friday is usually the big day each week for transactions, injuries, etc. leading up to that week's game. Get it done tonight, no distractions tomorrow, and get the dub Sunday.

It's baffling that this franchise has an opportunity to sweep the stench of the past few years away with Rhule and yet, here we are, not paying our best defensive player....at a position that gets paid. You don't turn down the draft haul less than a year ago and have a staff with veteran NFL minds like Reich, Capers and Caldwell that understand the bizz to not get this hammered out.

You've got the cap space in '23 and even more down the line.....Get it done. You're making the franchise look like it's been perceived the past 5-10 years....unprofessional.

So, how is that different than this situation?

Burns is set to be a FA and most of the league is desperate for a pass rusher of Burns' ability.

That's been my point the whole time, that if we don't sign him now and let him play out the season, unless he totally busts, we'll end up needing to pay him more than Bosa got just now to keep him.  Either that for franchise tag him and then we have to deal with this all over again for another year.

Nothing. This franchise has been terrible with their decisions.

Nothing will change until Teppers sells the franchise.

Sell the franchise, get a new owner, he does a reset with new coaches and GM. You start over again. Tepper wants to win, I have to believe the foundation is in place.

Burns is not set to be an FA, he has another year on his contract - CJ's contract had expired and he was going to a free agent with strong family/personal ties to Georgia, wit the Falcons known to be actively targeting himactively pursuing him. He was also one of, if not the, premiere pass rusher in that FA class.

I'm not arguing that Burns shouldn't be re-signed and agree with your position overall, but they already screwed up by not getting it done last year and compounded it by turning down that windfall trade before getting the deal done, driving the price at least somewhat up. Only thing to do now is wait and see how it all shakes out.

He's definitely done a great job so far. No one can argue that.

To be clear, you're saying Tepper has done a great job? You have to be kidding. Maybe this was the start of a turnaround but dude has been abysmal deicison after utter failure after stupid mistake ever since he got here.

No he doesn't, this is the 5th and final year on the rookie deal.

If we don't re-sign him now or franchise tag him after the season, he's an unrestricted Free Agent come March.

Yes, he does - Burns has this year. CJ had played out all 4 seasons of his full rookie contract and was headed for free agency when he was re-signed. That is a vital difference.

No, he doesn't, not sure why you're telling me I'm wrong for a second time now instead of just a quick google search of Burns.

He was drafted in 2019 and his rookie contract covered 2019, 2020, 2021, and 2022, with this year, 2023 being the 5th year option for first round picks.

He has 0 years left on his contract after this year, if we do not re-sign him or franchise tag him, he is an unrestricted free agent when FA starts in 2024.

When we're talking about possibly overpaying a guy to keep him from signing somewhere else, a guy going into his last year of the deal is the same thing as "him going into FA", particularly when he's threatening to hold out until he gets his deal.  He very well could decide to sit out until Week 10ish to limit injury risk and just hit free agency in the spring.
