Some positive and critical thoughts on yesterdays game

I don't have the all-22, but for the second interception, I have a very strong feeling it may have been a lazy route by the receiver there. He probably should've come back to the ball more.

More speculative at this point until I check out the film. I'm of the opinion Young just needs more reps with his receivers and understanding their deficiencies and tendencies moreso than blaming Bryce himself.

Neither do I but that’s what I saw. Marshall appeared to hesitate on his route and that gave Bates the opportunity to jump the route. I’m sure Young and the receivers will get on the same page as the season progresses. However, Marshall needs to do a better job with his route running; there were at least three occasions where hesitation or stopping on his routes caused an INT or incompletion IMO.

I really don't know how you could watch this game and come away discouraged (except for the WR corps) considering we are starting a rookie QB and have an entirely new coaching staff outside of O-line and ST.

Oh wait I know why, because the internet and having access to media 24/7 has rotted people's brains and they expect results instantly

Because you were expecting to.

(in some cases, looking for a reason to)

That, or perhaps you sadly just don't really understand what you're watching 😕

Seems like this is the case for a lot of the negative posters on here.

Sure, it's been a long while since the Panthers sniffed success. Rhule held the team back and his influence has caused the team to takes multiple steps backwards. I get there are impatient fans out there who just want to see this team get to the playoffs already.

But, it's asinine to believe that it would happen immediately after a coaching change and new rookie QB.

There will be growing pains. What needs to be seen is potential, not instant results.

The Bengals didn't immediately go to the Superbowl Joe Burrow's rookie year. Peyton Manning wasn't an immediate juggernaut his rookie year.

Hell, for as impressive of a rookie season Cam Newton had, that team still went 6-10.

It takes time to build a new foundation for success. It's not the Rhule era anymore, everything's reset back to zero. It will take time.

But there's hope for improvement and growth with a new regime, and under Frank, a plan that doesn't involve a Jay-Z seven years.

I have reason to believe that success may come soon, even if not immediate, and there will be a lot to be excited about.

That's what I thought as well.

While the Rhule regime was a clusterfug, perhaps they saw that TMJ's route running may not be up to snuff or seemed to be progressing in a positive way. Seems he made a bunch of bone-headed and lazy route running decisions against ATL.

Hoping this is more an aberration and TMJ improves in that regard. I have to say it was concerning seeing him falter this past Sunday.

Football is a way more cerebral game than many think.

But even with that understood, fan takes are much more frequently emotion driven than logic driven.

I get it. I just can't get on board with it.

I am not 100% sure we were the best team. With the turnovers and shorter fields, it appeared like we were better but we just had more plays. Atlanta had a better yards per play, yards per rush and yards per pass. Per play we were worse but with the turnovers and quicker scores we had the ball for 10 more minutes and we had 50% more offensive plays. The Falcons were more efficient per play/rush/pass and didn’t turn the ball over. We had a rookie QB with less weapons, so I’m not surprised by the mistakes. I’d rather have Young but the Falcons may have been the better team yesterday not looking through panthers colored glasses.

Yards per play is like completion percentage, doesn’t impact the game like turnovers and penalties does, especially on the road with a first time starter under center.

Yard per play definitely impact the game more than penalties. Turnovers are huge, but that’s not what I was saying. What I was saying is that due to the turnovers we looked like we controlled that game more with TOP and yardage. Looking at efficiency, they ran the ball and passes the ball better than us and had no turnovers. I might lean on the fact that that means they played better hence the 14 point win. Looking at the stats, I can’t say we were definitely the best team outside of turnovers.

Burrow is listed as healthy. If he is legitimately still injured then the Bengals are dumb playing him because that could really make his injury more severe. I think he was just very rusty. He threw like 4 picks week one last year and I don’t think he was injured then.

Ah yes let's trot out Trevor simean

Think if it this way...

If you were to go to a group of Lions fans right now, which take do you think you'd hear more of?

#1) "Good start. Still, we were sloppy in some areas, benefited from opponent mistakes in others and frankly just got lucky more than once. There's a lot of work yet to be done so let's try and stay reasonable and not get too full of ourselves right now."

#2) HOLY SH-T, WE JUST BEAT THE WORLD CHAMPS! BEN JOHNSON IS A GENIUS! DAN CAMPBELL IS A COACHING GOD! IT'S FINALLY OUR TIME! SUPER BOWL BOUND BABY!!!

...

Yeah 😕

I get that you guys are trying to temper expectations but I don’t believe any of those teams had more than 3 wins when they got the number 1 pick. We were 7-10 last year without an all star coaching staff.

Again, I feel like some of you are making more excuses for the staff than you should.

Rhule and Wilks were 3-3 against Atlanta with a worst loss of 8 points, so Reich and crew got our worst loss to Atlanta since Rivers’s 0-8 finish that got him fired.

I like Young and wanted to trade Burns to focus on young weapons to add around him, but I don’t feel like we were well prepared on Sunday or that we’ve done a good job building the team talent level the last few seasons. I’m tempering my expectations because of that more than growing pains with new people.

You have to put some context on that too.

It's not like we were world users. Hell, the one truly good team we faced absolutely drubbed us.

Bill Parcells quotes aside, the Panthers weren't necessarily as good as our final record made some believe.
