I think time on the bench with his injury was good for godfrey. He never really got a chance to sit back and observe what to do with the safety position, he was thrust in there as a rookie and told to produce. he was sucking at the beginning of the year, but after he came back, he came back with a vengeance. I remember reading an article about him and his injury and how he was getting different looks at defenses and situations observing them rather than being a part of them. It seemed to help a lot and i think he did great after that fact.

I'd have no problem with him at starting FS next year.

It is interesting that the general consensus is that both Godfrey and Martin have good skill sets that need to be developed. And that Godfrey played well at the end of the year. I can remember how many people roasted Fox for putting Godfrey back in and used it as an example of how his blind loyalty was a severe liability and limited our chances to win. I guess he knew something the casual fan didn't when he put Godfrey back in.

I think Gamble, Marsh and Cap is a very solid trio. Would not like to lose Marshall at all.

Yeah for the first time since Minter I'm pretty psyched about our safety situation. Godfrey played much better at the end of the year, and Martin looked very good in his short stint. It is always good to have solid depth at the position. I think Martin is a more natural free safey, where as Godfrey would be bettter suited at strong safety, but Harris is a good leader and a good player.

As far as corners I'm going to be the first one to say it: I'm not really that sold on any of them. I think they are all solid, but if we lost one of them, and got a true-shutdown guy, I think our past defense would be one of the best in the league.

I think we need to bring someone in to compete for the nickel spot, because I don't think Munnerlyn has nearly as much potential as some people do.

Our secondary is very young and very solid. That is a rather rare situation, but a very good one. Captain probably needs another year before he gets the #2 spot, but he for sure is a competitor. He covered some very, very good receivers this year and did rather well. Marshall and Gamble are solid and dont really give up big plays. I think the biggest problem we have is the FS position and thats because we have two good players and 1 spot. I would like to see some packages that can try and get them both on the field at the same time. Using them situationally though is an awful idea. Teams will identify weakness' and whenever those two switched in and out, try to exploit them. When you dont start and then are thrown in there say 2nd quarter, it generally takes a few plays to get accustomed to the pace of the game and that can cause you to give up a big play. So they need to find ways to use both because they are ball hawks.

Depth is needed more than anything.

If Gamble/Marshall/Captain went to IR we'd be one guy away from bringing someone off the street. I think CJ Wilson and Dante Wesley are serviceable but like Delhommey said, you can never have enough CB's

as long as we keep marshall and wesley i'm pretty happy with our DBs.

i wouldn't mind brining in competition for CB, FS, and SS but there are bigger needs elsewhere. if we can affors to have solid depth brought in, that would be a good thing. any depth that we have there should be ST players first and foremost, though.

btw...munnerlyn doesn't play nickel when he's in. marshall does. when munnerlynn is out, marshall lines up on the right side. munnerlynn comes in and marshall moves inside to cover the slot while captain covers the right side.

We def. need better competition at SS. Harris just hasnt been cutting it lately. I thought I saw somewhere where Marshall led the team in passes defensed. I think we have good depth but we still dont have an elite shutdown CB. Gamble is good but not great.

What about at SS? Chris Harris is a rock but how would you feel if we spent a high draft pick (2nd - 3rd) on a Safety?

I want us to draft a hard hitting SS in the later rounds to give us another Harris.

I think it would be interesting to put Godfrey and Martin at FS and SS on certain situations and give us some versatility.

I want a ball hawk saftey I would love for the panthers to draft Eric berry ... He's going to be great addition to whatever team he goes to.. Buttt we have no 1st rounder and Carolina isn't in a position to need a saftey in the 1st butttt damn I wish we could have him.
