The truth is that their business model is broken and they just haven't accepted it yet.

Don't know about "broken", but there was a rush to claim a stake without fully recognizing what the marketplace needs/wants. They're now moving into recovery mode, and will eventually land on something that makes sense for everybody.

And that could very will be a merged streaming package. But it won't be cheap.

I haven't paid for any type of cable or internet tv service in several years.  You guys are behind on the times.  There is a way to cut the cord from the other cord that's been cut.  It's called a PC with a dope ass monitor.

..... I use a streaming iptv service for 40 bucks a year... thats reasonable.  I get all major sports markets and tune into the local area for games. Get many other programs around the world not just sports....

I know that but you are obviously not paying attention to the amount of commercials Max and Hulu are including now.  My point is that this will clearly get worse

Netflix's largest subscribed tier is their lower-cost ad-supported plan. There is an audience willing to trade lower fees for seeing commercials.

I do pay attention to commercial spot load, and am equally annoyed. But I also know why they're present. Could a streamer charge a higher CPM, limit spots to a max of 15s apiece/one min max per break, do "this program is sponsored by" lead-ins....?  Yes to all of these -- just a matter of time until things balance out.

There are content providers today who created their programs without natural commercial breakpoints, believing their content would be seen commercial-free on a streamer. They're not happy with the situation either.

If you want a bad commercial experience, you should have watched A Few Good Men on BBC America this weekend. Long spot loads seemingly every 6 minutes -- including smack in the middle of the Jack Nicholson courtroom scene. It was horrible compared to what the streamers are doing

can't tell if joking or not

not a joke, it's true.

Somebody has to pay for the content creation/licensing. if you're paying for a pirate stream (either via money or their own overlayed advertising), then that's money that doesn't go to the content creators.

Buying a bootleg t-shirt outside a concert doesn't pay the band performing inside.

They are all trying to re-create the cable model and it will only work on a certain demographic.

Young people aren’t going to easily be conned back into this.

The whole entertainment industry is completely fugged.  The model is broken.  Advertisers want to get their products out to people.  I get it.  It's a part of business.  Nothing in this world is free.

Production is expensive.  From actors, to extras, to crew, to the artists, writers, sets, costumes, locations...the list goes on.  It's not as simple as filming in a backyard somewhere.  How do these companies pay for these productions?  Either via subscription or advertisements.  There are very few billionaires willing to burn money on a tv show.

The old cable model has been discussed with carrier fees, etc.  With the disruption of the pay for a bundle model that cable has relied on, channels have to figure out how to get the money to get rich and produce content to keep people paying.  It's just the model is now fragmented instead of universal.  Companies will now hide premium content from OTA or regular cable subscribers behind a paywall.

Your left with the options of piracy (which seems great for you), until the things you enjoy pirating end up getting canceled because there aren't enough paying customers.  Again, these companies make a LOT of money off the advertising, which in turn allows them to buy these expensive shows from the studios.

What is the option here?  I'm much more of a fan of paying for what I want to watch instead of paying for a bunch of crap I don't want.  I like that if I'm done with HBO for a little, I can cancel then reup later.

The NBA has provided this statement:

Quote

“While we look forward to learning more about this new venture, we’re encouraged by the opportunity to make premier sports content more accessible to fans who are not subscribers to the traditional cable or satellite bundle”

Yep.

The average consumer is all streaming these days, and the avg person carries 2.9 subscriptions/month.  And you cancel and resubscribe dependent on who's carrying the shows you want to watch.

It's all just a dance right now with these companies (all owned by 5ish main conglomerates at the end of the day-Paramount, Disney, Comcast, Amazon, & Apple) to see what works the best for them.
Those peak years of cable were a stabilizing force for them to become the giants they are.  They don't have that type of binding infrastructure-based luxury anymore and are trying to create it through acquisitions & partnerships.

Just like rock music, what you knew of media and TV is long dead.  Has been dead.

We're in this weird period where the mega moguls are positioning and buying the moguls to create the best umbrella corp in the age of streaming.

Disney went for a huge grab when they purchased purchase 20th Century Fox and then the majority stakes in Hulu.  The new sports-service is definitely stemming from those moves and more positioning taking place.   I can definitely see Fox Corp & Warner going capoot within a few years with more and more moves.

It's all just such a dance.

It's our own fault. Everyone thought the first streaming services were sooo cool, and the tech was sooo cool, and "I can watch wherever I want", etc. So they got rid of their cable and subscribed to the 1-2 services and saved some cash! Fast forward 12 years and we now have over 10 streaming services (all with shows you can only watch on that service) that are slowly raising prices every year. Some people are now paying more than they were before.

It was never about some cool new tech and the future (from the company side) of viewing that will crush boomer cable. It was about money. It is about money. Now they have you trapped and you can't do anything about it.

Yup - New means but same methods, by the same players.  Just have more players eating each other.
