How does a first round pick go from having a good rookie season with a lot of promise to a bust in one season?

Is he just that bad?  Or

The Panthers had a terrible offensive line scheme?  Not to mention the injuries to our interior line.

I am hoping it is the latter and not the former.  This will be his third season under his 4th regime.

I don't know what Reich was trying to do but IMO there were far too many hands in the cookie jar, and it showed on the field.

The most difficult part of this is Canales is going to have very little time to figure out which one it is.  He'll have to look at tape of 2022 and 2023 and decide whether 2023 was a sophomore jinx or he'll be fine.

i never paid much attention but i remember hearing pff podcast talk about Icky getting a lot of TE shade help his first year.

I've heard that before as well.  That could also be because he's learning the position.

for sure. didnt the guy from new york take several years? Andrew Thomas. I'm not sure its time to move him inside. i want to see one more year personally, but have a plan in place if he's truly not cut out for the position. that way we'd get a year at guard (his fourth year) in order to decide if we want to pick up a fifth year.

I think the good thing is he's still an asset if we have to move him inside. It won't be a total waste of a pick. Plus it seems many believe Brady C. could handle the LT spot.

2024 will be a great time to figure things out. 2025 we can focus on upgrading QB or LT depending on how Young and Icky progress.

On a side note, Brown was a 7th round selection.  We should have a team of scouts focused the bottom feeders.  We need to start thinking about 2025 and beyond on day 3....

We need to have a strategy. Take OL flyers late, especially guys who did well at big schools but for whatever reason didn’t go early like Norwell out of Ohio State or Smith (Tennessee) or Williams (Oklahoma). Don’t take projects who looked bad pre-draft like Deonte or waste picks like long snappers. We tried to fix our Smith mistake with Mays and Zavala but they haven’t looked good. Still needs to continue but TBH, our scouting department has been god awful at finding good value.

Honestly, I think he may just be bad at LT pass blocking. Burns would have his best game ever if he played against Iky. Fast, quick off the ball edge rushers can get around Iky so fast it’s crazy.

Maybe he’s just slow off the ball and can fix that but damn he just looks like he doesn’t have the footwork or god given athleticism to stop a fast edge rusher.

Rouse from OU, Jones from Texas fit the bill imo. Both currently undervalued. Iirc both have lots of snaps/starts under their belts. I don't get the reason Rouse went from a mid/2nd tier OT prospect last year to now a late or UDFA guy. Their film is pretty ok/good. Is it prospect fatigue?

Hard to tell if someone doesn’t go through the draft process. Look at Greg Little. Marty, unfortunately, had a hard on for the guy but had he stayed in school he could have easily dropped. He was a top/1st round prospect until he looked awful at the combine position drills. We caught the falling knife and his career turned out to be exactly what we saw at the combine.

So a player could have had a great grade because they never got scrutinized or they dropped because they had a not as good year. Also, early draft material is all over the place so if you combed every site/talking head there would be 60 players who all were in one or more first rounds.

Preacher -- choir  Fully agree

I think we have GMs that see a player that they feel dropped and think they are grabbing a bargain.  No, they drop because their scouting departments and GMs saw something.  I recall Clausen--Minnesota and KC needed QBs that year, and some crackheads had Clausen as a top 15 pick.  I remember Hurney taking Clausen after KC and Minnesota passed on him---in the second round.  In fact, he tried to trade up to #33 to get JC, offering a first rounder the following year plus other picks.  This franchise is only as good as its front office.  Mr Brass Balls needs to get another desk ornament, maybe this time a brain paper weight.

That’s why I didn’t want Morgan. The past 3 drafts were so bad even compared to the rough drafts Hurney had past round 1 in 2018/2019. I felt like Fitterer was Hurney’s clone because of all the reaching but then you add on top his horrific trading and not even being good in the first with 3 top 8 picks no less. There’s literally nothing to point to to feel confident about Morgan’s three years as Fitterer’s right hand man.

The whole I want dawgz comment may get some folks juices running, but not mine. I just want to see actual good drafts where we get great value and improve the team. IDGAF if our GM is a former LB tough guy who hypes up the crowd or is some skinny nerd who can’t lift 25 pounds. Whoever drafts better is who has my vote.

We’ll see soon if we’ve got a chance to get back to the playoffs anytime soon.

    • Oh good lord Interest doesn't mean interest in making a bad trade to take the player, that's why I had such a long post, to accurately describe why those are two different things, but you don't like to listen to that stuff.  Being interested in a player doesn't live in a vacuum. It's very simple... there isn't a #1 draft pick type of grade on any of these QB's, if there was, we'd just take them.  You can't bluff a pick everyone knows you won't make, and trying to trade the pick is the CLEAR signal that you're not taking the QB. Just because the Raiders would have interest, doesn't mean they're going to bail us out of a situation we don't want to be in, they'd be smart about it and just sit put, let us take a non QB as we'd be telling the world we're not taking one just by trying to trade the pick, and then they'd take him at #2 (either with their own pick or by trading less to get that one). Oh, and your point of "if nobody is willing to make the trade, you obviously just take the best QB" is quite literally the dumbest thing I've ever read on here. If nobody is willing to trade up to take the QB, then it's OBVIOUS that the QB isn't worth taking with that pick, so OBVIOUSLY taking the best QB there is just OBVIOUSLY stupid and a bad pick. The moral of it is if there is a QB worth taking, we're taking them and not making the trade.  If there isn't a QB worth taking there, nobody is trading up to #1 to take one, we just showed the NFL how bad of an idea that is 2 years ago, it's really not hard to see. You keep making up this mythical situation where there is a QB who has shown to be worth trading up to #1 for and we'll be able to leverage that into a trade.  But we're the most QB needy team in the league, if we end up with the #1 pick, either we are taking a QB #1 or no QB is going #1 unless we get VERY lucky and two teams in the Top 5 fall in love with one prospect and we can play them off each other and fleece one of them. But again, I can't see that happening, as if there was a QB worthy of that, we're just taking him ourselves.
    • Sanders is with Tom Brady brand and that's his mentor. The Raiders owner was with Sanders taking pics at a Vegas game together.   It doesn't take much to connect the dots that Vegas will be interested in Sanders as their franchise QB. Oh yeah and guess who hasa small ownership stake in the Raiders Tom Brady.   I guess this is just another made up Madden idea by me huh?
    • Bro I don't mind debating you, but did you really have to write all that to get your point across.   This isn't Madden. If you have the #1 pick you literally control your own destiny. If nobody wants to trade which I have a hard time believing they won't then you obviously take the best QB.   I think we will have suitors. If that's Madden then so be it.
