nothing really new, just thought an outsiders view on what has been going on in the offseason was interesting.

By every metric you want to measure, the Carolina Panthers’ 2023 season was an unmitigated disaster. They had the worst record in the NFL, yet nothing to show for it because they traded their first round pick this year to the Chicago Bears for rookie QB Bryce Young.

Young’s rookie year was marred by inconsistent playcalling (and playcallers), a wide receiver group that was held together via silly string, and an interior offensive line that was middling at best. This resulted in then-head coach Frank Reich being fired during the season, and a near-complete cleaning of house that included GM Scott Fitterer. Oh yeah, when he’s not throwing drinks on opposing fans, Panthers owner David Tepper is firing head coaches more often than most people change clothes.

To simply put it, new Panthers head coach Dave Canales and GM Dan Morgan needed to get the Panthers off the doormat of the NFL. If this offseason’s acquisitions mean anything, it’s that Carolina might be dusting themselves off, having a quietly very good offseason.

When examining offseason acquisitions for most franchises, it’s important that you see the vision of their 2024 season. What that means is through each signing, you should be able to tell what the focus for your favorite team was going into the signing period and what they’re aiming to do in the 2024 season. For the Panthers, their objective is simple: they want to run the rock while giving Young the ability to play point guard.

Will this lead to immediate success in year one? The jury is still out, but odds point to no.

However, with these moves the Panthers are off the doormat. Which is a good thing.

Yeah, the only thing I'm really paying attention to is Bryce's development this coming year. Eeking out wins despite of him doesn't excite me. If he doesn't show traits of a franchise QB, move on.

I really do not care so much about what Bryce does or doesn't do in the offseason.  I'm more focused on what the team as a whole does or doesn't do. Bryce is only one part of it and if he doesn't improve his game then he will not be starting. What's more important to me is what these coaches are able to do with the rest of the roster they are assembling. That's going to decide the future this group more so than one player.

We need that franchise QB though. Otherwise, best case scenario we'll be that really good team that can't get over the hump

I bet they are, for some reason, still including interim HC. 
If we don’t he has only fired 3 HC. 

Ron, who was past his time being here and was never going to work out. 
 

Rhule, who stayed far longer than he should have. 
 

Riech, who was a bad hired and not right for the direction the team needed to go in.

I don’t want to defend Tepper but he hasn’t been that fire happy on the NFL side at least. I think if we had of shown some improvement Reich would have been given a longer leash. 
Some would say he has had a little too much patience on the NFL side.

Now on the soccer side, yeah, he has been a little fire-happy.

And sitting around lamenting on it changes things how? The situation with take care of itself. Either he will or he won't.  End of story.  Now can we focus on the rest of the team? You know they are just as important right? We've spent the last 8 seasons worrying about just the qb position while the rest of the team dried up and went to crap. How did that work out? How about we try to fix what we can and let the rest work it's way to the forefront to be addressed next offseason.  This team is not winning much this season unless Canales and his crew turn out to be the next McVay or something.

      2026 World Cup Thread

      Hello, soccer fans [crickets, tumbleweed flies by]. The World Cup kicks off in less than 2 weeks and, well, 🇺🇸USA USA USA🇺🇸 and all. We beat Senegal 3-2 yesterday in a tune-up friendly at BoA, with Christian Pulisic finally entering the scoring column.  How will we do in the World Cup once our tournament kicks off on the 12th? Well, there are 48 teams (assuming Iran is there) and it feels like one of two thing happens: we get grouped for the first time since '98, or we make it to the Round of 16 for the third time in the last four World Cups. I tried out the lottery for an Atlanta game and struck out, so yesterday was as World Cup as I'll get for in-person ($285/ticket for like Norway vs $39/ticket for USMNT right beforehand was a layup).  The U.S. has a travel-heavy schedule in group play, playing in LA, Seattle and LA. Real road warrior mentality being built. Glad the east coast gets worse kickoff times for a NA World Cup than a Qatar World Cup.

      Well, that's the thing. Drafting players only for their physical measurables as you are suggesting only really happened during 2024, and X unfortunately has become the poster child for that. To be clear, it's not necessarily about drafting RAS over skill, but RAS over NFL-readiness and/or a solid body of work. Lots of players show skill in college, but those skills don't necessarily translate to the NFL for a multitude of reasons. But, getting back to the main point, to be clear, I believe that our FO is still enamored with physical gifts (who wouldn't be?), but now they're letting Dr. Eric Eager's proprietary system--his "secret sauce" prioritize the players that the Panthers draft, and it seems like it weighs not only a solid body of work, relative to a college career of course, but consistent gradual improvement as evidenced by production pretty highly.

      Its a good article about how pathetically bad our past drafts ('23 and '24) have been. Building the team in '23 since we weren't ready yet and taking your qb in '24 made so much more sense in hindsight. Ladd McConkey over XL is pretty much a given but not sure it does as much to change Bryce's trajectory as the author suggests.  As bad as '23 and '24 drafts were, the '25 and '26 really give me hope.
