How accurate is Madden for coaches?

Recommended Posts

At risk of collecting piles of poo, a stupid question--how well does Madden's AI account for actual playbook and coaching?

I ask because I've recently gotten around to playing '24 more (refuse to pay for it since it eventually comes with GamePass), and with Canales' playbook, the Bucs run a LOT of play action. Is that realistic? Is that what we can expect here as well? Given the draft investment in the RB position and Bryce's..."dimensions"...maybe so?

I swear the playbook from Madden 2010 is THE EXACT (or very very VERY close to) the same playbook for 23.

I didn't play any of the Maddens inbetween for the most part, and my son has been asking me to play with him a lot. 22 and 23 had almost identical playbooks to 10.

I don't think it's very accurate at all overall IMO. I just think back to the Cam era. Madden had to incorporate read option in order to even begin to replicate the Panthers' offense but there were only a handful of read option plays in the playbook. Realistically, I bet at a third of our passing plays in those days involved some aspect of read option and a third might be conservative.

Well, obviously. I think they just watch the games and then try to build a playbook that vaguely resembles the offense that coach runs.

Which is doable. Well. Use to be.  Seems like it's more challenging to do the same things in 2024 than what I did 20 years ago.

Luckily the quality of graphics in the game haven't changed. 🤣🤣

This is exactly along the lines that I was wondering. If some YouTuber can diagram plays or follow an All 22 to review games, surely EA can afford to have people do something like this, and it wouldn't surprise me if they had computers do this automatically in order to build the AI. I mean we're talking about calculating football plays not the orbits of Jupiter's moons lol.

You also have to consider the average user of their product vs. the time and effort involved in building a playbook. How many Madden players are legitimately looking for the absolute best, most accurate football simulation they can get? Most want a somewhat accurate representation that's entertaining. They're building a video game for entertainment, not trying to build a perfect football simulator. Personally, I'd greatly prefer the latter but I also understand that I'm a tiny sliver of a minority that isn't financially worth catering to. It is what it is.

There's more to coaching than play calling, even down on the field. Madden isn't going to simulate how your WR1 had a big fight with his wife the night before the game and is stiff from sleeping on the couch. It's not going to simulate that the fight was because the QB's wife was flirting with the WR and now, because she went full on ballistic that the QB now knows about it.

It's not going to simulate that questionable bucket of wings your o-line shared three hours before the game is now causing cramps and gas. It's also not going to simulate the real wear and tear of the season and how about December even the moderately good teams are about halfway spending their brain power on picking their January vacation destinations.

But for a video game, it's pretty good.

    • I can say that I have defended Canales because I get that they are doing all they can to keep from looking like idiots for drafting Bryce, from the trade up to signing $150m guards to drafting XL and Brooks etc---nothing seems to work.  And Hiring Canales was part of the Bryce Young rehab program, so so he can't really decide to "move on."  That has to come from Morgan and Tepper. Personally, I think Bryce is due for an injury.  He is small, he is not thick, and he has been a LOT more healthy than most any other QB has who has endured so much pressure.  The thing that bothers me is this---Bryce really does not go through his progressions quickly.  He locks on to his presnap read and stays locked onto him for too long--he seems to fail to anticipate the WR/TE's positioning on the play before the cut--for example, if the WR is running a dig and the CB has his back to the inside of the field, he should be open for a second or less just after the cut.  He seems to wait until the cut has been made before deciding, then checking down quickly while moving in the pocket. OL:  There seems to be a lack of communication--is that on Mays?  Watch this team presnap--they seem a bit confused at times.   I can almost predict the success rate of the play by watching the center and QB before the snap.
    • Anyone else remember back in 2010 when Fox piloted having music under the in-game replays during one of Carolina's games? Not the commercial bumpers but the actual replay clips that the announcers would talk over. Pretty sure it was vs the 49ers. And it was terrible. Point being, Carolina continues being so bad that we get the networks trying things out during their games.
    • Is it bad I found this video more hilarious than pathetic? I am still laughing at that one play where half the people on the field ran into each other and Bryce still couldn't see Chuba wide open... Also laughing at Cade blocking nobody and somehow losing his cleat Man this offense is a poo show
