Stop the obsession with the QB position

I saw it but I didn't think scoring was a problem. I watched the game and didn't come away thinking our quarterback was the reason we lost. I came away from the game thinking if we had a defense we would probably be in contention for the division. Which is why I say let's start building a team and not focusing on going all in on a quarterback every year.

Dalton is 36 and our other QB is bust young, We have to pickup a QB in FA or the draft. You cant seriously go into another season with only these 2 as your viable QB options.

Dalton isnt even under contract for next season....

I do not view this panthers team as fixable, at least without years of correct drafting.

*BUT* I swear neither the texans or commies had much more talent than carolina and they drafted one QB thats lead them out of the darkness year one... Thats hard to ignore. Bungals were 20 year losers, drafted burrow; got sacked 70 times and still changed the team into winners....(nearly SB winners).

I just dont have the QB hope, but there are examples....

This is fun: https://www.chicagobears.com/news/huge-trade-a-gift-that-keeps-on-giving-for-bears-panthers-2023-dj-moore-draft

And we'd sure be happier today if we had used the pick at least correctly.

Agreed, but we don't need to reach either.  I have no problem trading back assuming we get the number 1 pick.  We need to do what Chicago did to us.

Nobody is that stupid. That was some Fitterer foolery.

I doubt we have the number one pick, and we shouldn't trade back unless we think that our guy is going to be there.

QB is the most important position on a football team, possibly in all sports. You aren’t making many playoffs without an above average qb now, maybe you could back when defenses could actually play defense and running the ball was more important.

But as heavy as this upcoming draft is with quality defensive players we need to shelve any thoughts of taking a QB, fix the defense and give your rookie Qb in 26 a decent foundation to build on.

If there is a guy available in that potential perennial all-pro tier at his position, you probably take him… but I’m game for another roll of the dice at QB looking at this overall class. The draft isn’t the most impressive on the lines unfortunately. Some good WRs, but it’s a mixed bag of high firsts. So yeah, if it makes sense, why not.

But agree that the focus is on building a team without mortgaging any future assets. Either land a guy you want (at any position) or accrue assets via trade.

A look at all the QBs making championships over the past 35 years says it's not 1st round QB driven. There are only 64 championship QBs, and this includes Jake Delhomme, Kurt Warner, Case Keenum, Tom Brady, Nick Foles, Mark Rypien, Eric Kramer, Brock Purdy, Rich Gannon, Brad Johnson, Russell Wilson and more non 1st round QBs. 5 of these QBs went to a championship in the past 10 seasons. 3 of the 5 won how many of the past 10 SBs? Foles beat Brady.

Mahomes and Brady have won 7 of the past 10 SBs. Mahomes walked into a ready made contender. The other 3 are Foles, Manning and Stafford. We know Manning did nothing. It was defense. Stafford managed a defensive game. Foles beat Manning in an offensive shootout. Keep in mind Manning and Stafford were not drafted in the 1st round for the team that won the SB. The Rams have drafted how many 1st round picks in the past 8 years? The Broncos only drafted defense in the 1st round for 5 straight years leading up to their SB, and that's what stopped Cam.

Any QB game manager can get you to the playoffs. OL, running game, defense and coaching carry the load during the season. Clutch QBs are needed in the playoffs to get to the championship games, and there is nothing favoring a 1st round QB being clutch over all other QBs.

Never draft a QB in the top 20 picks unless they have a professional sports pedigree!

If you need a QB it's simple competition and steady flow of a QB type (physicality/talent is not a deciding factor for champions). Sticking to a competitive strategy that filters out QBs who are high TO% and low clutch performance will always work. You're always looking for the one who refuses to give up the starting spot by feeling momentum, showing high situational preparedness, and knowing when to take risks.

Top 20 picks should be defense with few exceptions. If you want offense, trade down to get more picks for defense and OL. There should always be a 4 QB rotation (3 roster and 1 practice squad) on the depth chart until 1 has held onto the starting spot for 34 games. Then go to 2 QBs on the roster.

Patience in this process is key. There will never be a QB allowed to fail for more than 5 straight games for the myth of long term development.

This QB strategy results in hitting on a franchise QB within 3 seasons while building a strong defense and deep OL.

The defining factor of success for an NFL Franchise has been the HC/GM combos who have studied, mastered and implemented Bill Walsh's book together.

The Panthers franchise appears to be no where near this championship strategy or philosophy. Butting heads over philosophy and mixed/inconsistent strategies have been the constant since Tepper took over.

    • I was watching a YouTube and it was said that scout and GM insider types were saying the NIL had killed rounds 4-7. I don’t know that I buy it, seems like it might for a year or maybe two but then those guys have to move on.  NCAA is apparently about to give 5 years of eligibility. It is gonna skew those entrants older maybe.
    • Miller being less raw and more pro ready makes sense of why they picked him. With us having a capable starter in Walker the lower floor higher ceiling player makes sense for us as well. I agree with that.
    • I'm from Michigan and have had this discussion with my Lions friends, and they all agree with me, they were never going to take Freeling over Miller.  As, yes, you are correct, they could have left Sewell at RT and taken Freeling, but they are in a SB contention window right now. An OL with Freeling at LT and Sewell at RT is not as strong as Sewell at LT and Miller at RT would be for this upcoming season and likely at least next year as well. 5 years it could be looked back upon as a long term "mistake" to take Miller over Freeling, but for a franchise like the Lions, you can't worry about the long term when you have current SB aspirations.  It's all about maximizing their current SB window over the next 1-3 years. And it's not about style, it's about day 1 readiness, and a lot of "experts" aren't even sure if Freeling is ready to play Week 1 yet at the position he's used to, let alone switching to a side he hasn't played before, but a career starting RT is going to be more than ready to fill that role for them Week 1. I'm 100% convinced that if our draft positioning was swapped, we'd have still taken Freeling, they'd have still taken Miller, and both teams would have got the OT that they preferred due to what each team needs right now and what their current realistic aspirations are for the 2026 season. We're in a position where we can let our drafted OT sit and learn for a bit, they needed a week 1 starter, for me that's where this discussion becomes very easy to understand why each team took the player they did.
