Mayes at C over Christensen is the headscratcher to me.

I could see a few reasons for the move:

1. Icky is just coming back from being out 2 weeks.  BC had been replacing him at LT and Mayes has done a fine job at center.  IF Icky has to come out, sliding BC in at LT again keeps continuity. 

2. The odds of us resigning Mayes at a cheap(er) rate is much higher than retaining BC.  TBH I don't think anyone truly knows what BC's market will be next season.  We have roughly 12-13 million of cap space opening up if we let go of Yosh and Corbett.  (4 mil and over 8 mill respectively) If we can retain both Mayes and BC for that amount I'd be ecstatic.  I'd still draft a developmental swing tackle from a power 5 conference.

Corbett is not on the roster next season and BC is an amazing asset to hold on to.

It makes more sense for us to extend him 1-2 more years with a reasonable cap hit. It's a win-win.

I suspect BC will be in the $4-7 mil a year AAV.

To be able to plug in a backup LT without much drop off from your starter? That could mean the difference between playoffs or sitting at home in January. Good/serviceable smart young and healthy LTs that won’t lose you a ball game at reasonable $$ don’t just come along every day. Everyone talks about the most important positions on a football team… backup LT is in the top 10. 

Picture next year… the team is scrappy and competitive, 4 and 3 record, second place in the South. Morale is good. devastating run game that Let’s our marginal defense get plenty of rest. We play the Bucs and win, going to 5 and 3, but we lose Ickey to a high ankle sprain. Atl loses that week and are now at 5 and 3 as well. There is no Ickey and no BC because we let him go… and we go in to Atl the next week for a battle of first in the south. Week after that is the Jets…. Now they lose both by 10 and 3, respectively, and fall to 5 and 5 going in to their bye week. Atl is at 7 and 3. Out of typical Panthers desperation, they try to rush Ickey back in to the lineup with a saints game coming up… 

Back to good old Panthers football, always playing catchup. Another season at .500 and the fans sadly rejoice in mediocrity, when playoffs were in reach. This team always overestimates its ability to pick up quality o line depth in the draft or FA and it always blows up in their faces.

Like Chuba, I see him as being part of the core that Dan is trying to build. Work on his contract now and see if we can come out with something mutually beneficial. I’d consider 3 yrs at $25m to be very fair.

 We will see what happens. This is likely his last contract, so he might want to get paid. If someone is willing to overpay($25 mil is that) then you just let him walk. We don't have enough cap space to be throwing out mega backup contracts to people that aren't Ian Thomas.

it’s incredible. the 8th wonder of the world. 
 

career: 119 receptions for 1062 yards and 4 touchdowns. By the end of the 2024 season, he will have earned about $19m in his  7 year nfl career. 

If my math is mathing correctly this AM:

so that’s $159,663 per catch. if broken down by yards, it’s $17,890 per yard gained. $4.75m per touchdown.

It’d be one thing if these were game changing, but not a single yard or catch meant a damn thing.

If they feel like the performance level is similar, they probably want to see if Mays can play well enough down the stretch to win the starting job going into next season.

Plus, yeah, Brady Christensen is an excellent depth player given he can play literally every position on the OL at a solid level. Personally, I'd like to see us extend him regardless just for that alone.

He might legitimately be the most versatile OL in the league.

Mays is not under contract for next season. The team signed him off of the Giants practice squad after they picked him up following the Panthers cutting him.

Absolutely right about BC being one of the best 6th OL guys out there rn tho!

He is nearly as valuable as a starter.
