Id be good with signing him and then throwing everything else at the defense next season

You cannot fix this defense with one draft. Signing Higgins will eat up a lot of cap that we will need for other upgrades. It sounds good but not a wise move at our current state of being.

The way I look at is we can focus on defense in the draft and sign your top receiver. We can’t afford to go into next year with big question marks with XL and Coker who still need time to develop

You cannot expect to fix the defense with draft picks alone. A lot of that money is going to have to go to the defense.

I agree we need wr help desperately. But not as desperately as the defense needs help.

How about we draft T-Mac (Evans mini-me), and have him on a rookie contract for five years.  Use the cap that Higgins would have taken up to re-sign Horn and/or sign another FA on defense.

With two guards eating a huge chunk of cap, we sure could use cap space for FA’s on the defensive side of the roster.

[Snow makes the same point above but hits the send button before I did.  He says it better than I did, anyway.]

I feel like our offense could be significantly improved in one off season if we make the right moves. Especially since we're adding an all pro back in the mix

I agree.  If we pick the absolute best defensive player available in the early rounds it will still take another offseason to field a decent def.

How significant as you say will greatly depend on who is available and how lucky they get in the draft. Dan didn't do too well with the defensive additions this past offseason.  I would call it a muh.

Big issue with Higgins is the injuries over the past two years. He hasn’t been able to stay healthy, he was dealing with an ankle/knee injury heading into todays game.

But those saying he isn’t a #1 are dead wrong. He’s missed 5 games but his projections over 16 games are 100 receptions, 1,248 yards, and 15 TD’s.

Literally, the only WR putting up better numbers than Higgins on a per game basis is his running mate, Chase.

You just have to ask yourself, is a guy who has missed 10 games over the past two years worth $30M a year.

People that call him a number 2 don't realize he's only that because he's overshadowed by one of the top 3 WRs in the league. He'd be miles ahead of anything we have.

But the injuries are a legit concern

Injuries are the only thing that would keep me away from him. We don’t need an Aiyuk situation.

But there’s no denying Higgins is a #1 in this league.

He would be the best on our team as it stands now. But I'm not in favor of paying him a big contract to come here.

    • Who is "they"?  Who in the media still argues that Bryce Young could reach the levels that people thought he would before the draft? I mean, nobody is going to come outright and bash the kid.  By all accounts he's a good dude and I think that is why you don't see the media come after him like they did Zach Wilson.
    • It started during the Denver game after that first drive. i don’t think the panthers got a first down again until the fourth quarter.
    • The Panthers will finish with at least 7-8 wins.  So that leaves them with only two "smart" choices in my opinion: 1. Sign a reasonably priced free agent QB and see if they are better than Bryce Young in training camp - The issue is there will be very little options.  There is almost no way the Colts let Daniel Jones walk.  Rodgers, Flacco, and Wilson will likely retire (and is Wilson better than Bryce anyway?).  Winston is under contract with the Giants for another year.  That leaves Mariota, which I'm all for, but the Commanders will make a big push to keep him given Daniels' injury history.  Outside of him, there is literally nobody else. 2. Stick with Bryce Young for one more year - Nobody wants this to happen, but the Panthers won't be in a position to draft one in the first round and it isn't a strong class to begin with.  Mendoza, Simpson (and do we really want an Alabama QB?), and Moore will likely all be off the board by the time we pick.  Bryce isn't good, but we are still 5-4.  I'd rather continue to build the rest of the team than reach for a QB.  Then we could set ourselves up nicely in 2027 to make a splash play if we choose.  This is how we should have approached years past; stuck with Kyle Allen or Sam Darnold or Teddy Bridgewater and kept building the team until we were ready to make a splash.  But every year we panicked and did something stupid. There is the idea you could throw a dart at a guy in the later arounds, but IMO this just isn't a good QB class and odds are it will be a wasted pick.  I still think we need a lot of depth on the defense.  I'd rather focus there.
