Have to decide on a 4-3 or 3-4 line

Right now....no. A defense heavy draft with quality picks and smart FA moves will be big for this team. No projects or lame guys coming off injuries would help. The 2025 and 2026 drafts (if worked right), they could be back in shape.

That's a heavy lift in one offseason with the caps space they are sitting on.

How quickly people forget Derrick Brown is not a 43 DT. He's a DE & only fits a 34 scheme. Relying on Brown to control gaps for the run is crazy talk. He needs to bull rush and slant inside with someone else doing the outside contain.

I still don't think Tepper will ever decide to away from the Steeler 34 defense he loves so much.

Wanting to force a 4i tech DL into a 2 or 3 tech is asking to have the center of your defense ripped open. It's bad enough Ekwonu is playing LT, Young is playing in the pocket, Horn is forced to play umbrella zone, Shaq is forced to play ILB, and XL is forced to play over the middle. If you want to win, then you play these players at their strength position/role for most of their snaps.

I like you and all. But crack is bad.

Brown played 4-3 in college and will do just fine in a 3T next to Mason Graham.

For those hoping for a 4-3, I think it’s a pipe dream. Tepper is from Pittsburgh where 3-4 was been run for many years.

Evero will be leaving, Saleh is a friend of Caneles, so chances are that may be the new DC. So we will stay in the 3-4.

i have said from the beginning that without a good NT a 3-4 will never stop the run.

so if Evero or Saleh is here, we still need a solid NT

I think Saleh is a 4-3 guy, right? It is an attacking 4-3 that would fit Brown really well imo.

Maybe thats why Rhule ran the 3-3. He gives off the impression he is building a 3-4 and then walked Burns to the line for a 4-3 each time.

Yeah. He runs a lot of 4-3 over which utilizes the 3-tech more. Rivera/McDermott used to run a lot of 4-3 under which gave you a lot of flexibility with your Will LB (Thomas Davis).

In SF, Saleh would run a lot of 4-2-5 with a "Big Nickel". We used to use Shaq in that role here when we had a similar defense.

    • Gotta wonder if Smitty's brain has turned to mush with how hard he played in the NFL
    • OK, fair enough--however, since my point was that drafting a QB in the top 10 is stupid, if you consider the players who were not drafted in the top 10 or those who WERE drafted in the top 10 and did not secure starting positions with the team that drafted them, you should see the point.  Is it smart to draft a QB in the top 10 when only 4 are still starting for the team that drafted them.  Next, consider that half of that number, 2, were drafted outside the first round.  Next, there are 4 (Goff, Mayfield, Jones, and Darnold) who are starting on other teams after busting.   That number could increase as Arizona seems ready to move on from Murray, Miami is not sold on Tua, and jacksonville is still waiting for Trevor to start looking elite.  Bryce?   So to answer your question, there are MANY more QBs in the NFL who have busted and become starters on other rosters, were drafted after day 1, or are still on the cusp than the four who have become elite.  I thought that point was made.
