Josh Norris: Panthers-Garrett Wilson trade options

Jalen Coker has entered the chat

Coker is our best WR prospect, but we're talking about a #1 receiver that defenses plan around.  Coker might develop into that, but he might be a WR2-3 his entire career.

I don't understand turning our noses up at elite players because we have rose tinted glasses about our own guys.

3 seasons, 3 straight 1000+ seasons. You might not get a top 10 for him but he is easily worth a first round pick.

He's on the last year of his deal. Same reason we got jack poo for burns,  he's about to get PAID.

There is usually more money in free agency and every agent knows this. It's how we got those 2 OGs last year.

Right but he's not a UFA until 2027 since this is the last year of his deal, and then in 2026 they have the 5th year option.  He may not want to be stuck on the Jets for 2 more years.  Plus a lot can happen in 2 years.  Look at what Diontae Johnson did in less than 1.  A trade and extension agreement fixes both of those problems.

Why are we so pressed to get weapons when we can't get the ball to them? We need O-line to protect the QB before any "weapon". Our first pick needs to be something boring/foundational O-line or D-line. We went to the Super Bowl with Jerricho Cotchery, Ted Ginn and Devin Funchess. I say that to say that we don't need the weapons at this point.

Burns was also coming off a season where the passing rushing specialist who sucked vs the run was tied for 37th in sacks.

Johnson was a known character issue, people here willingly avoided it except for a few. Injury seems like a much bigger issue IMO, the NFL is brutal even if he is only 24.

An extension only works if he agrees or it's just an expensive 2 year rental. Maybe he wants out of the Jets so bad he doesn't care about winning or getting his biggest possible payday. Once his 5th option is picked up it's as guaranteed as his pay next year so he doesn't have to sign anything if he doesn't want to do so and still hit free agency in 2 years if the team trading for him doesn't have those negotiations locked up before the trade is finalized. Franchise tags being much diminished as they are and all.

On the flip side he is a proven #1 WR with 1 year left on rookie deal and a 5th year option.  He is only 24 and if you are going to spend the money why not on a young guy who can give 6-8 years

Most people would use a top 10 pick on a receiver with those numbers and have no problem paying them.  But giving a pick to another team to get that player?  Unreasonable.

Our OL was one of the better overall lines in football last year ... We do need depth, and our DL is legit garbage but the OL was the best unit in the team by far.  Ultimately we still need weapons, tho I'm not big on giving up #8 to get someone that's likely only here for a year or two.

    • My long and rambling post:   The guy is all heart, and I wouldn’t be surprised if he came back even better next year. He’s exactly the guy you lock up. The money won’t ever change the way he plays.  It was a big fumble, but what 1,000 yard back fumbles once in an entire season?  Pride. This team is FINALLY seeing guys who obviously take the game very seriously. Hunt, Chuba, Thielen, Brown, Horn (CB), Coker, Bryce (IMHO). Bye bye, Spider-Man. I don’t see these dudes being OK with teammates half-assing practice or in games. I can see Brown and Horn coming over to talk to somebody.  Good team? Ummm, maybe, but will still likely lose more close games than they win unless this last draft turns in to LOB part 2. That’s a stretch.  Pretty good/decent team. Yes. They finished the season as a pretty good team. I know I sound like a broken record harping back to it, but going in to ATL and putting a 40 burger on them en route to an OT win. A bad Panthers team would have had their brakes beaten off. We’ve seen it.  Rose colored glasses on and bonging a 40 of hopium: There are watershed moments that occur that change the course of franchises, both good and bad. If Fox doesn’t pull Rodney at halftime, the epic journey that was 2003 never happens. On the negative side, Cam taking that one hit from Watt was the end of any and all Panthers relevancy and we’ve been the biggest losers in all of pro sports as a result. Watershed moments. LOB draft. Vinny goes down and the goat is born.  Will the ATL game be the spark that this franchise has desperately needed? Could it be that they hit the mega million jackpot with Princley and Scourton as eat QBs for breakfast? Sure would be nice having 2 all-pro edge guys on the cheap for the next 4 years.  A lot of unknowns, but at least it actually feels  fun again.
    • Ok LT and Petersen are a cut above everyone else to me cmc and Faulk are interchangeable on this list.  though Faulk was better career wise
    • Maybe faked was too strong of a word.  "Milked" may be the better way to call it.
