Never lived up to his potential? I recall thinking he was pretty damn good. Why so much hate for the guy who simply played out all contracts and wanted to move on? He only has one good 5 or so year run left in him. Why hang around for a couple of rebuild yeard in Carolina? Would you? I know I wouldnt.

i think it's fair to say he didn't reach his potential here. When you see him take over football games and then get handled by a TE on a passing down you tend to think that he could be doing better.

He certainly played well and was valuable to us though. I can't believe how many people turned into scorned little schoolgirls when he left. Some people still haven't gotten over it.

I agree he didn't reach his potential, his laziness was the only thing that got in the way there. Great player of course, but he had the potential to be one of the best DEs of all time. As it is now, I'd have a hard time even putting him in the HOF. I only expect things to go downhill in Chicago.

the problem with that statement is that i dont think he went to a team that is a contender... i would agree with you if he had gone to a team like the jets, san diego or the colts, but i dont think he has a better chance of winning a superbowl in chicago than he had here in carolina. even without peppers, i still think the panthers will be better than the bears are.

It was a bad year for a highly sought after UFA, not nearly as many big money deals this year because of the CBA.

As far as going to those 3 teams, where do you think that he would fit in?

San Diego plays a 3-4 and has Merriman, Phillips, Tucker, Applewhite, and English rushing the passer.

Jets are in the exact same place, as well as the Pats.

Colts have Freeny and Mathis, and they have not even decided to "take care of their own" in the pass rush dept..

As far as where should he have gone to be a contender....well I think that NO, and Minny were the best bets, but I doubt they were going to pay what he wanted.

    • yea....Minnesota fell off the map this year after going 14-3 with Darnold...bet they wish he was back... and his record looks good this year...maybe he figured it out.... he does get the tight azz in big games still.

    • i presented this in another thread. he throws better to the out breaking routes the wr run, but almost nothing to the inside. that is half the options on a wr route tree. How do you run an offense like that?  even the outbreaking routes he throws are moonballs, that allow the DBs to catch up unless the wr is wide open. he has to throw with a lot of anticipation becuase he doesnt have the arm strenght to get it there if he is a little late. thats probably why you see balls behind the wrs.
