Jalon Walker player comp: Haason Reddick

It’s underwhelming. Jalon Walker is being overrated, I feel. PFF has him as their #27th ranked player

Walker would be Frankie Luvu.  I am not sure the Jets knew how to use him, and we did.  A good player-a hybrid, but not a pure edge.

Walker is way more than Luvu.  I hate this comparison, Jalon is extremely versatile and a crazy competitive guy.  His motor is nuts and he will be a bigtime LB.  Exclusive pure EDGE…no.   Great LB absolutely

While you might be right, your inference here is that Luvu is not what you call Walker (versatile, competitive, motor--Luvu is all of those too).  Aside from that, the Luvu comparison was in relation to the Panthers to give people a player we have had with a similar skill set.  It is biased when you talk about college players (with an average first round non-bust rate of about 53%) as "bigtime...great...and absolutely."  You don't know that, and I would never say that about any player.   What we know:  Walker had a year of production in college and is rated a top 30 player.  Luvu recently signed a $31m contract.  I like Walker too, but I am not hugging his nuts at this point.

The more I read about this kid the more I am sold on him. Rankings have him all over the place, so hard to tell really when he is going to go. Would love to trade down a bit and still pick him up between 12-16.

He is probably going to be a good player, a chess piece, but it depends on how he is used.  My point earlier, Frankie Luvu was nothing but a special teams player for the Jets and we picked him up and used him better.  That led to a $31m, 3 year contract.  Same player, different systems.

I had a bunch of people arguing with me the other day that he can play a traditional inside or edge, but it's just not the case.  He is a piece that has to go in a creative system to be able to get the most out of him.  I don't think that's us at all, and I compared him to how we could never figure out how to use Chinn.  Different type of player but same situation.

He's still way too much of a raw project for me to be on board with at #8, he's not likely to be an impact player for at least a year or two, he's Burns 2.0, a tweener who is going to need a couple years to add bulk/strength to be able to play edge full time in the NFL.

1 year of actual playing time, edge rusher in a MLB body, seems like a 3-4 defensive player who if/when we switch back to a 4-3 in a year or two after we move on from Evero, won't have a natural position for us at that point either.

We need to stop falling in love with high RAS score guys and thinking we're going to turn them into elite players through coaching.

This.  Walker will likely be a good to great NFL player, but he is not a good fit if you consider risk and what Morgan did last year with a raw player.  Is Walker raw?  You could argue either side of that debate, but I also think this:  It is February, and there is a ton of digging to do--many on here have claimed that Walker is their pick, and now we are not discussing players, we are fighting to see who is right.  This is research time--digging and watching and listening. You have not seen the combine yet.  I love the player, but there are pros and cons.  Instead of trying to prove your point all the damn time, try to find someone who can change your mind.  I come here for that reason, not to be right all the time--coincidentally, that is usually the result.  😀

No disrespect to people who want him, I just look at the big picture and think from Morgan's perspective.

Last year, Morgan did not pick well when he was drafting day 1-2 offensive players.  He drafted Wallace, maybe his best draft pick and Sanders was low hanging fruit in round 4.  Smith-Wade was a good pick in the fifth, another defensive player who looks to be the nickel at the moment.  Remember, the focus was offense, and Morgan struggled.

XL has 2025 to change that.  I do not think Morgan gives up on XL, and with the addition of Coker and AT's announcement to return, I think he will add a WR or two, just not in round 1.

Let's not forget, however, that Morgan WAS a LB.  He will think like one when he watches Walker tape.  If Morgan loves Walker's hybrid qualities and Evero gets in his ear, the pick is likely to be Walker--but if he sees him as a LB, Morgan has clearly stated ILB, Edge, S.  as the biggest needs.  When he says "needs" he means starters.

I love the DL in this draft--watching the combine, OH CRAP.  Deep as hell. S---deep as hell.  This is why I think the first pick will be Edge.  Does Morgan see Walker with abilities to play edge at a high level?  I think it comes down to that.

I compared him to Chinn as well, and several skallers on here screamed, "Different Position" but did not mention why that was a valid point.  It is a criticism of the coaches and system being a match.  I just compared Luvu to Walker (hybrid LBs) and some unbreastfed Huddler said Walker was destined to be a superstar because he is (and he listed characteristics that describe Luvu).  Point?  Luvu was a solid player with the same skill set and we let him walk.  Am I to believe that Walker is the messiah now?  If Pearce is there with Walker, Pearce is the pick. He had a good combine.

Yea i honestly think that if Carter and Graham are gone as expected (even though I've started seeing some mocks lately with Graham falling a little) and we get a good offer to trade back a few spots then I think we should.  Not because I don't like some prospects there but because I feel like there are several with similar value.

“He’s a hybrid LB/edge” just screams to me that he has limitations at both. For the fanboys, that’s where the Luvu/Chinn talk comes into play. I’d rather trade back and take Schwesinger in the 20’s or Warren or someshit. It’s at least best player at their position. Maybe Grant….stay put and pick TMac? I just prefer guys with defined positions and knowing you are filling and improving one of 22 positions in top 10. Give me a combo guard in the NBA or as a mid round project in the NFL draft. Seems insane to think that’s a good idea top 10. Hybrid is for weed and werewolves.

I think we should try to trade back (Carter Graham gone).

    • I had started typing my post hours ago and didn’t finish it and just came back to finish it, posted it, then saw yours and saw we were pretty much saying the same thing - even the games that stick out to us most.  I don’t think a lot of people remember that SF playoff game, but I felt like I had just got mugged in broad daylight.  I remember them calling Mitchell for unnecessary roughness, and then I remember watching Boldin take a super late cheap shot, dead in front of the ref and then showing him watching the whole thing in replay…  the refs let them have a fuging field day and didn’t do jack poo, but if we so much as breathed the wrong way it was fuging 15 yards.  Each team playing under two completely different sets of rules.  poo hurt.  I was enraged.  I’ve never went back to watch either that game or SB50 and never will.  fuging robbery.
    • I’ve said it a million times since, but it’s impossible to keep them from affecting the game.  In SB50, they literally took the game from us, and they did it early.  Cotchery’s no-catch?  The miraculous amount of times we converted for a first down only to have it suddenly called back make it a 3rd down and 15+ against the best defense in the league that specialized in rushing the passer and man coverage on the back end?  And you do that enough times, you kill the morale and confidence of the team you’re doing it against.  It’s telling the one team “you can do whatever with impunity” and the other “you can’t do whatever they’re allowed to do.”  It changes the aggression level.  It essentially neuters one team and allows the other to do whatever the fug they want.  Imagine you call the police for help and they get there and tell you to sit still while the other party beats the poo out of you and you can’t defend yourself.  That’s what the officials do.  There is no way to avoid them affecting the game.  And more often than not, it’s the most subjective calls they use to do so.  Even in SB50…  you saw the Broncos commit more egregious penalties than anything we did, and barely any of it was called.  Their OL was holding all fuging game and the refs did nothing.  We already had our work cut out for us against two future HOF edge rushers and the refs played to their advantage with that.  From what I remember, both Oher and Remmers were called for holding at various times and their hands were in the INSIDE of the defender.  It was garbage, but all by design. Also, if there is any video of it anywhere, go look at what the refs did against us back in 2013 against SF.  The fix was in there too.  They stepped in early and often and ensured we knew we were not allowed to play with the same aggression or intensity SF was.  It was disgusting as well. at this point, I hope Vince McMahon, errr, I mean Goodell just finally scripts us to win it, because this poo is not won via competition or off merit.
    • You can go back to the New York Knicks somehow getting Patrick Ewing.  I saw a story where they place the New York Knick card in the freezer right before the drawing.  It was simple.  Show everyone the cards are undetectable to the human eye.  All they had to do was grab the coldest card. IMO ever since Goodell took over the NFL it has been fishy.  Patriots winning the SB after 9/11, New Orleans after Katrina and Peyton Manning's going away gift against us. The terrible calls during that game were blatantly one sided.  New England should have been stripped of their first 3 SB when they were caught spying on the other team in their SB wins.  I think the evidence against the Patriots was so damning Goodell felt it could ruin football and they brushed it under the table.   In the 2004 SB, How did we go from practically no yards in the first Quarter to setting a record in the 3rd Qtr.  Dan Henning changes the game plan.  IMO probably the greatest half time adjustment of all time.
