What's Matt Moore's ceiling?

I think we have a Derick Anderson and Brady Quin situation right now. Also throw Hunter Cantwell in the mix also. I think its Moores Job to lose and we will see what he is made of come game one with the Giants. The Panthers seem to always start slow so if he can lead us to a win it would be a big plus.

it's tough to set a ceiling until a player is about halfway through their career. he could turn out to be a tom brady like player, not much expeted of him but turned out to be a superstar or he could turn out to be a jake delhomme, good enough to manage a decent career and end up with a nice highlight reel by the end of his career, or a derek anderson, a flash in the pan. he hasn't started full season yet, it's too early to tell.

he isn't a peyton manning, mad skill and talent and everybody expected him to be a star in the league.

tony romo on the other hand, i think you can now set a ceiling for him and i expect he will reach it this season. very capable, top 10 QB and can win you a superbowl. he's no brady, manning, brees and never will be.

moore, could be a romo, or just another average joe.

clausen could be another peyton manning, or a total bust.... we need to see him start a few years before we can tell.

It's obvious this question can't be answered until he has a lengthy season under his belt. The problem is that the offense he will be working with is not the best (sans Double Trouble). So I don't expect him to be lights out (if he actually IS that). That said, if our D can't hold anybody the first half of the season, and we don't win...look for Moore to be put on the bench. I don't envy his situation at ALL. It's going to be very stressful for the kid.

I was listening to NFL talk radio today an they were talking about Alex smiths development and I started thinking about how matt Moore doesn't get a lot of respect and yet he has never really played a "terrible" game. He has always been pretty steady in his starts. I know the playbook has been scaled back at times but he ultimately still has to make the throws regardless how simple the plays may be.

So my question is what is everyones view on how good he CAN be...maybe not how good WILL he be. We are simply talking about potential...do you view him as that Tom Brady/Peyton manning franchise QB that we will follow no matter what? Or do you see him as a guy who will always be looking over his shoulder bc he is just average? Or somewhere in between?

Moore looked really terrible at times in the Patriots game last season. The good thing is that his main problem in that game had more to do with timing, footwork ect, and not talent. Moore is a play action pass QB. He will look good when the running game is working and LBs are biting on the run, and safeties are cheating up. Not so good when the running game is stuffed and he has to carry the team.

matt should do well and be a very solid, mistake free QB but i think clausen could be elite.

That's sort of how I see it as well.

This is no slight to Moore, but he does benefit from being teammates with two of the league's best backs and one of the league's best receivers. I'd like to see him put the team on his shoulders and win in the absence of a running game before I deem him an elite franchise quarterback.

That being said, football is a team sport. He probably won't have to do a whole lot in this offense, and that's okay. I think he'll be enough -- it's just a matter of if Clausen can later bring more to the table.

I think he's got one of the most ideal situations you can expect a quarterback to have. Great running game, one great receiver and a few others with potential, and a promising young, fast defense. Not to mention he's had three years to prepare himself.

i think hes a 25 touchdown 10 int. I picture him having a matt hasselback career with him goin to playoffs many times and goin to super bowl onece or twice. Hes a good QB has mobility but doesn't rely on it. Has good medium and long arm strength as well as accurate from those distances. In every game he played he had a pass that was atleast like 25 yards so i think he favors medium passes with the occasional deep pass or atleast the offensive scheme he was in tailored to that pass. He is also super accurate on the run and threads needles. His decision making could be a lot better on few occasions in his career he was baited into coverage that looked like soft spot in zone. While not all of these passes were picked off it still concerns me a little.Over all i like him, especially how cool collective he is. He seems to have full control of of now i think of steve smith aswell. We can see both him and the other QBs in preseason and hopefully get a better look.

This is exactly why expectations should be very high and not so-so.

The bottom line is that with the right QB the Panthers should have a top 10 or top 15 passing attack. If they don't, he is simply not the right QB.

I don't really like saying certain players have "ceilings." This isn't basketball, every year players drafted in late rounds or not even drafted show up and make an impact for their team.

I think(based on what I've heard/seen) that he is driven to get better and that's all that really matters.

One of the things Belicheck does best is take away specific weapons and make you beat them in another way. So they will shut down the running game and make us beat them through the air. Besides the passing game stepping up, we need some better playcalling and less predictability.

    • Canales up first. Guys got their legs back yesterday and started a little slow when they came out Bryce challenged them in the huddle and they responded "Dominant practice for the defense today." Praised turnovers, "beautiful hits," and being physical Praised Moehrig, Ransom, Incoom, and Jones II Confirmed playing starters. Predominantly a young team and can't pass up an opportunity. Emphasized game day routines such as nutrition, body readiness, etc. Plus it's a bunch of new guys on the defense. Bryce will start. Will play them the first two, but starters might sit for the third game depending on how practice goes that week. Nic Scourton has a mild hamstring that happened in special teams. DJ Johnson had an issue with his hip flare up and is getting checked out this afternoon. Experimenting with approach to preseason games. In Seattle they played their starters in all but the last preseason game and what Pete Carroll was looking for in terms of mental readiness to play football. Thomas Incoom has been getting a lot of work with AC Carter adding to his toolbelt. Getting better as a rusher and being physical in the run game. Looking for a consistency in response. 1pt for a win, 3pts for a TD. Defense doesn't like that, but in games if they give up one go ball the score can swing. They challenged the pass game and the run game today. Guys are getting together before, between, and after team drills to challenge each other Job of the coaching staff to set the foundation for our schemes, philosophy, and expectations of what it's like to play Panthers football. Powerful when players take that and the locker room owns it. That's when it becomes our team, their team. At the end of the day, the men on the field have to rebound from a bad play, celebrate the good plays, and keep each other in tune for a whole game. Robert Hunt is amazing. Size, talent, quickness, flexibility. Really intelligent guy that there will say himself there are technique things he needs to work on. Regardless of where players are at, there's a constant learning curve and loves that Big Rob is challenging himself with the position coach. Thinks the digital down and distance can be really valuable. Getting the information quickly will help with the flow of the game. Thought TMac looked great but there were some near misses that he'll have to get in the room and communicate with Bryce on while reviewing film. James Mitchell keeps doing right and his trust factor is increasing with the QBs. If you're right and the coverage says the ball goes there, it'll come. Had some issues at the start of camp but is trending up. Newton or Person: "It looked like today was beyond thud but short of live. What do you call that?" Canales: "No, that's thud. In my mind, that's what thud should look like. The challenge for our defensive guys is can you put your body in a position where we know that would've been a tackle." Whizzing by, tagging with two hands, etc doesn't show you whether you would've made a tackle. That's not real football. Let's the play extend because guys have to be ready to chase sometime where the ball squirts out from a pit. Can't train to say "Ah, it was a tackle" and relax but instead play with intensity through the whistle. Lathan Ransom is bringing the physical style of play that they saw on film. Has been really into the details and someone that they can count on. Has really given himself a chance to start at the other safety position. Excited for the extra energy from a game-like environment that they'll get from FanFest. Used to have four preseason games and now FanFest feels like that first one. Will give ST full speed reps to evaluate. Making plays and feeding off of the fans. Window closed quickly on the INT to finish practice. CSW baited Bryce with some movement and made a great play. Saw it from Bryce's perspective with TMac coming open. Has played all over the secondary that they can count on to speak loudly and be on the same page with his teammates.
