Panthers QB Clausen might blow his chance to start if unsigned before camp

yeah... he won't start, so no, it doesn't matter when he signs. i'm actually hoping he does take his sweet ass time to sign, cause it'll just mean Matt Moore has a better chance at starting. which he should anyway. i was more worried about us getting Lafell signed. now that he's signed, we've got a full offense written in, and ready to go.

i'm not worried about it. there have only been a couple second rounders who have signed anyway. if he was the last or one of the last i would be a tiny bit annoyed but it isn't like he was going to be playing a big role this season anyway.

after a year no one will care, esp. if he does get the start eventually and blows it up.

Clausen will not see the feild until 2011, if we have football. I think Moore will start this year, and he will put the Panthers in a tough situation if he does fairly well. He will want to get paid, and knowing you have 3 pretty damn good QBs behind him, do you pay him? Right now, Clausen is not the #2 QB. If Jimmy feels entitled to more than others, he better show signs of beating out undrafted Hunter Cantwell. He is signed, knows the offense, and is ready to go.

I doubt that Clausen has much of a chance of starting this season anyway.

Moore would have to literally stink it up to high heaven for there to be any chance of that happening. This is all under the assumption that he can beat Hunter out for the 2nd string spot.

Moore won't get the Delhomme treatment from Fox. I believe Fox will bench him if he has two bad games.

Of course Clausen will beat Hunter for the 2nd spot.

He wasn't going to open the season as the starting QB anyways, but if he misses a significant amount of camp then he could lose his shot at being the # 2 QB this year.

But HIS goal is to win the starting spot. If he holds out, then he can pretty much kiss that goodbye...and he knows it. That's why he won't hold out.

This may be the worst reasoning I have heard on the subject. Whether he's #1, 2, or 3 on the depth chart, I want Clausen in camp as early as possible so he can be the best QB he can be if he does have to actually play (due to injury or otherwise). Any delay will impede his progress and potentially hurt the team if he does see the field.

And to be honest, while conventional wisdom says that ideally a rookie QB should sit at least a year before starting, there are exceptions. And it is ridiculous to want Moore to start no matter what. If he does not continue the strong play he displayed at the end of last season and really stinks it up, and Clausen shows himself to be the exception by excelling in pre-season, then Clausen should get the start. Without a doubt Moore has earned the right to start, as well as some leeway for growing pains, but if he severely struggles, then the start should go to whoever has shown themselves to be the one that gives the team the best chance to win (and we shouldn't discount Cantwell in this mix, if the reports on his progress are accurate).

Good point, and right now he has to beat both Cantwell and Moore for that job so he better be in camp on time.

A better Title to the article would have been,"Hurt His Chance To be the #2 QB".

I can not see John Fox putting Clausen in a game real early in the season, even if Matt Moore gets injured.

My bet is he would try Hunter Cantwell first and then Clausen as the next option.

Naturally,my thinking will change if Clausen lights it up in TC and preseason. A case in point that is still to be determined.

2010: Matt Moore has a decent season and gets Matt Schaub-type free agent money after his deal is up at the end of the year and Carolina doesn't keep him. Moore ends up the starter in Jacksonville.

2011: Lockout

2012: Clausen is the penciled-in starter, Hunter Cantwell and Pike battle it out for the #2 spot.

What is Matt Schaub-type free agent money? Schaub has never been a free agent.

And if Matt Moore had just a 'decent' season, why would a team spend Matt Schaub-type money on him?
