So this was Jakes problem.

While I am it. Like this quote from Peppers.

That's just fine with Peppers. He'll take the responsibility and carry it on his broad shoulders.

"It's something I've dealt with my whole life really, so it's nothing new," he said. "I relish the role, and I'm sure that I can live up to all the expectations and do what's expected."

Really Peppers you must have forgotten 2007.

Is that a picture of Peppers signing an autograph??? When did he start doing that???

That difference-making ability won't manifest itself until the regular season gets under way

Yeah, and then it will disappear the moment the post-season starts.

i'll buy it to a point. old dog...new tricks...yadda yadda yadda.

they wanted to play smart football. jake was holding them back. rip was a technician and davidson wanted a more complicated offense. jake couldn't handle either of those. he crumbled under the pressure and didn't have the guts to man up and say it wasn't working. you don't realize your limitations and try to get changes made to suit your skillset then you end up being a liability getting in over your head. there is nothing weak about asking for help. not asking for it when it's obvious you need it is weak.

jake shares a lot of responsibility in this but the panthers share a lot as well for recognizing the problem so late and waiting too long to make adjustments. that has been the case for the past several years of fox coached football. you wait too long to adjust out of ignorance or stubbornness and end up losing.

i like the drastic changes that have been made this offseason because to an extent it is a departure from the old way of doing things around here. still....it's not regular season yet. we still have yet to see what fox does when it counts.

none of this takes the blame off jake, though. his mistakes were his mistakes.

Jake gave the Panthers some great years, but he was never the same after the 'Tommy John' surgery. Other than the Cardinals playoff debacle, Jake had some other really bad stinker games (3 to 4) during the 2008 season. If the Panthers really thought he had 'anything left', they would not have let him go.

Of course it couldn't be the fact that Jake's accuracy went to poo and would stare down WR's. Jake was a good QB, maybe he still is but I don't think I'm alone when you could say that we saw this coming. We've been watching him play for a long time and in several games you could have said, " Wow that should have been picked" or " Thank god SMitty is superman". His pocket awareness has always been bad and he's had flaws for a while now but I think for the longest time his accuracy and unheralded connection to Smith made up for that.

    • Malcom Spence is the best player remaining, hope he’s there.
    • The era that you played in, and, more importantly, who you played with actually matters. Honestly, that's why these issues will be debated forever, as it's just difficult to say that this person or that person is better when you're discussing the passage of time. As for me, after Rice, Moss and maybe Megatron and T.O., there's probably a dozen or so guys that can be argued about to the cows come home. Personally, I'm not putting Fitz, Harrison, Johnson, Evans, or especially D-Hop, Jefferson, Chase or Hill definitely in front of Smitty (and Colston ain't even in the discussion). Context and all that stuff actually matters. Things like the triple crown matter.
    • Some of those guys? Yeah honestly you can.  I would 100% take Steve Smith over Larry Fitzgerald, Harrison, even Mike Evans. He is 100% a better player than those guys in his prime. If you look at the numbers Smith is historically under targeted in comparison to his contemporaries. He was only targeted 150 times or more only once in his career. Fitzgerald for example was targeted well above that 9 different seasons. Had Smith played with Peyton, Brady, Greatest Show on Turf, or even with Warner in Arizona he would broken records. His 2008 season was ridiculous accumulating 1400 yards in 13 games on less than 80 receptions. All time he also lost a season due to injury in 04, barely played WR as a rookie. Got robbed of 1k season with Clausen. Thats easily another 1800yds minimum that should have been tacked on to his #s. The only guys I’d say for certain are better than Smith are Rice, Moss, TO, Megatron, Julio Jones, Antonio Brown.
