Evero owned the 32nd ranked D last year and is sitting in the first to go chair for when this team needs to sacrifice someone.   I'm sure he has input.  I would wager he doesn't have a lot of influence present day.

He 100% has input.  You think Canales is drawing up this defensive roster?  He mentioned not entirely knowing what a nose tackle does.  Evero's scheme features the safety frequently which is why we targeted several of the top young ones available with Moehrig and being in on Holland.  It's just a version of Fangio's defense (which is probably trending now) with sprinkles Capers in there.  With a young HC with an offensive background, Evero is the defensive mind until he isn't.

I mean, he had input last year.   Input and actual real decision making in direction aren't the same thing.  They fugged him last year.

didn't say it was his fault.  but he 100% is sitting in the chair that gets tossed under the bus when this org needs to go that route (and all orgs go that route in time)

What are you even arguing here?  We signed Moehrig to a big contract and didn't run it by our defensive coordinator?  I think screwing him last year is the reason we tried to sign Milton and threw money at one of the young safeties (one of the most important positions in his defense) on day 1 of FA.  Canales has been pretty hands off with the defense until he gets more experience.

it's largely just a broad thought.....that runs counter to the it's a totally good move because Evero had to want him argument.    I simply don't think Evero holds lots of power in Carolina is all in terms of what we are doing.   So does he have input? Again, sure.  Just like he did last year.  Input.  Which wasn't much in the big picture.  They screwed him.  Bryce probably saved his job and Everos.

Morgan tanked the D.  I think Morgan has his vision on rebuilding it.  Evero may or may not be around for it.  I still contend he has largely been setup to be the first fall guy.  So yeah, I think he has input but it's Morgan's D.  That's just how I feel.

Morgan "tanked" the defense because we had to allocate money to the OL to see if our highly invested QB could work out.  Safeties are the bread and butter of Evero's defense and we were linked to two of the premium ones day 1 of FA.  His DT's are known for pass rushing vs run stuffing and we were in on Milton who does just that.  Morgan is the GM so he has final say but I doubt he is picking players that don't fit Evero's scheme.  He would just have Evero replaced for a guy who can run what he wants to run.  Morgan was part of the team who hired Evero as well.

I don't think you can heavily invest in assembling talent for the DC for what was the 32nd ranked D.  Again, not his fault, but football is football.   Football teams all largely behave the same way.  NFL is a blame game of survival.  When we get mad at the Panthers.....they will have to start making changes.  Just the nature of the beast.  He is first on the block of substance to be the sacrificial lamb.  So given that, you can't overly invest and empower Evero.  That's why I think it's more about Morgan than Evero.

Running by a FA signing with the coordinator using him isn't overly investing or empowering lol.  It's just common sense.  I get that if our defense keeps struggling Evero's seat gets very hot, but you don't cut him out.  Hell we still have Capers involved and Evero is his guy.  I get what you are hinting at but it's still Evero's defense until it isn't.

    • Um, no, just no. Bills, Chiefs, Chargers, Ravens, Bengals, Texans, Eagles, Commanders are 8 teams that it's not even a debate, they aren't trading their QB for Purdy. Patriots, Broncos, Titans, Giants, Bears, Vikings, Falcons are 7 more teams with QBs drafted in the last 2 years that also would rather stick with them than trade for Purdy as they all have more upside than he does. Lions, Packers, Cowboys, Bucs are 4 more that would likely keep their QB's as well, age aside for Goff, Dak, and Baker. Panthers and Colts are two teams in the same situation, QB's who have both struggled and shown flashes to where the teams probably stick with them because they drafted them, but in a re-draft of all QB's, they probably take Purdy over the guy they currently have. Jags, Cardinals, Dolphins, are 3 more with QB's who probably have a higher upside than Purdy but come with their own question marks, so debatable if they'd take Purdy over who they already have. That leaves Jets, Raiders, Steelers, Browns, Saints, Seahawks, and Rams. Rams would take him over Stafford for the future of course, but not for 2025, and I'd think the Seahawks would take him over Darnold, but honestly not sure if they would take him over Milroe at this moment as they really like his potential and have him for 4 years really cheap. That leaves 5 teams that I see who would absolutely take him over their current situation right now, and a handful of others who MIGHT take him over their current guy, a far cry from your 20.
    • Agreed. Also as soon as they received the top pick in the next draft it was over. Bears won that trade. Gave up a top overall pick got one the next year plus pick 9, a couple 2nds, and DJ Moore a proven young WR. Had their 2024 pick from us be in the late teens or later it would be more debatable IMO.
    • Option A:  Pay your starting QB starting QB money. Option B:  Look for a starting QB for 4-10 years (or longer) while wasting the talent at every other position.    How many of the top 20 QB's do you think are worth what they are being paid?   When you factor in the last year of his present deal his contract is really an average of 45 million per year which in today's QB market is a very, very good deal. I wish we'd had found a Brock Purdy to pay 50+ million a year right after we parted ways with Cam.  Ya'll go ahead and live in fairy tale land where good to great (much less elite) QB's are available to pay. Just the fact that they had the chance to pay Brock after the disaster of trading up for Lance is a testament that when you find a quarter back you can win with, complete in the playoffs and superbowls with, you pay him.
