Jimmy Clausen

I'll say this much... it's been a LONG time since I've seen such positive response by our fan base and the Media about a Panthers QB (last time was Delhomme's take over in 2003).

I know it was only one preseason game, but I don't think anyone (on the board here, or in the media) has said anything negative about the guy. Regardless if it is by the virtue of his performance or something else, like a charisma thing, it is is immensely refreshing.

I was never able to get on the Matt Moore bus. I know a lot of people did because of how awful Jake played. Then they talked him up so much they cant look stupid about it now. I think he's a good back up QB and is capable of winning some games! Now winning a whole season and playoff's...NO Jimmy Clausen still has a lot to prove and in due time we shall see. But from the atmosphere he came from and the poise he showed last night i don't think it will be as long as you Moore optimist think before Jimmy takes his job. I know its the first pre season game but think if it had been Clausen that started and then Moore came in second because that's how it looked.

I'll play devil's advocate.

He made actually quite a bit of questionable decisions. The Moore tipped catch pass, the screen into traffic, the interception all were fairly risky throws. The majority of his completions were checkdowns. Baltimore's secondary is actually one of the worst in the league right now and should of been exposed.

I'm excited about him too. But it wasn't a perfect performance lets not annoint the golden boy just yet.

Yep, good prospect for the future. Good draft pick so far.

So far? So far? With all due respect, Z, you need to stop being a pansy. You're setting yourself up to flip-flop...sway in the wind...do your best LoLo Jones impression as you hurdle from one side of the fence to the other.

Dude, get some stones and come on the greener side.:D It's OK. You know what time it is, just like we all have known since the 48th pick. You may not know the time or the hour, but you know what time it is. 2010, 11, 12, who can tell?

JC is coming like a thief in the night? Just have yourself prepared. But, hear me, Z, it won't be the end of the world, it will be heaven.

Oh, I'm not anointing him yet either. He's got a long way to go. Just glad we've got something else to talk about now instead of "How many more interceptions can a QB make in a year?"

I saw the same thing. Last night easily could have been a 2 INT night for him with a couple of risky "Favre like" throws. He did look comfortable under center and held his poise in the pocket though. Showed no hesitation at all. Gave a reason to be excited about the future regardless.

I drove by the stadium today and I am pretty sure they were taking down part of the Carolina Panthers sign and were changing it to the Carolina Clausens.....or maybe it was Clausen's Pathers....I dunno.

What I see in Jimmy Clausen is what I saw in rookie Donovan McNabb. Quick-out low-throw ball with velocity thrown to the correct spot. Dancing feet, good pocket awareness, good decisions, command of the field, great reads. Positive yards. Very, very smart. McNabb improved and so will Clausen. He'll be as good as McNabb if not better. I'm happy with all this.

Problem is we don't play a WCO pass first offense like Philly and McNabb. We play a run first vertical passing game. The same skills don't apply. With what I saw last night Clausen would be better off in a WCO than ours right now. Hopefully his experience in college in our type of offense will translate eventually into the NFL. But lets see what happens when he gets to look at film and practice a little longer. Rookie QBs make their biggest gains between the first and second preseason games.

Nobody exposed their secondary though. Not Moore, Clausen, Pike or Cantwell. I don't think his interception was a risky pass though. Had the WR not fallen down, it would have been an incomplete pass at worst 10 times out of 10. Maybe it is just risky to trust receivers who might not make it to the regular season though.

And while most of his completions were checkdowns, that shows he is going through his progressions and making smart decisions. Twice last night they showed Clausen getting sacked or throwing the ball away, once a three WR set, and not a single WR got any separation at all from their man. He looked good last night and it will only get better.

I just rewatched the highlights of him. Not sure what you boys are seeing. The throw across the field was risky but every thing else, even the interception where the receiver fell, had him looking pretty good.

    • Yep, I always said the best way to use him in the NFL is as a full time CB, and then get 8-12 offensive snaps a game. Half those snaps he's out there as a decoy so the defense doesn't know where the ball is going every time he's on the field, the other have are play calls with him as the first read, and likely trying to get it into his hands quickly to let him make plays with his athleticism.  That also would mean he needs less practice time on offense too, as he's not trying to get his routes/timing down with the QB as he'd be running a bunch of quick hitter routes or screens to get it in his hands. How NFL GM's didn't see this is beyond me (or maybe some did and it's why the Browns traded the pick and it was just the Jags who were dumb enough to think he'd be able to play both ways full time at an elite level.
    • Also reading this thread again and seeing that was a clear WoahCam alt, it really makes me wish he was still around to hear his takes on how "his guys" are doing this year. Shedeur can't beat out Gabriel for the #2 job behind old man Flacco, Hunter is struggling on offense and doesn't have a clear role, while T-Mac is proving to be exactly who I said he was and the guy WoahCam was very much down on for a while until he said he was coming around on him, lol
    • Yeah, it really seems like they made that move legitimately expecting him to be a two way player which is just crazy. You just can't be a two way player in the modern NFL. The obvious approach with Hunter was to have him focus on being a CB first and basically motivate him by telling him that the better you play on defense and the more comfortable you are on the field there, the more comfortable we're going to be putting more on your plate by carving out a bigger piece for you on offense but likely always limiting that to maybe 10-12 snaps a game at most on offense. Starting him out primarily at WR was just insane. At least they quickly saw that and adjusted but they really blew it with the off-season/preseason approach and it's causing Hunter to play catch up.
