Harbaugh / Luck Question #2

Mr. Scot

Recommended Posts

Did anyone watch the Arizona game yesterday?

There are teams that need Luck more than the Panthers I am afraid to say.

Only fans would assume that an organization would give up on a rookie like Clausen so quickly given the circumstances... zero running game until Gooden, rookie wide receivers..injuries.

Sure if another coach came, which almost certainly won't be Maize and Blue Harbaugh who has the perfect scenario to take his dream job at Michigan, he could draft Luck and punt Clausen and/or Pike. But you look at some of these other teams that obviously need a young quarterback.... Arizona, Seattle, Cinci, San Francisco... I find it hard to believe the Panthers would pass up a franchise DT to rebuild another year at QB. I could be very wrong, but IMO the logical move is to pick up a veteran QB and take a DL in the draft to replace Peppers.

My prediction is the new coach does EXACTLY what Shanahan is doing. Pick up a good veteran like McNabb... sign him to a long term deal... and then develop a young QB for a few years.

Hows that working out for washington? And you do realize McNabb signed a 4-5 year extension don't you? How many "good veteran" qbs will be available... The only ones on that list that I would even think about signing to a long term deal are Peyton, Orton and Vick... none of which will play in Carolina.

Secondly, what "franchise DT" is in this draft that I didn't know about? Did Ndamukong Suh leave the lions to reenter the draft? If you have the number one, I just dont see how you pass on luck. Trade down? Maybe, but only if the price is right and includes at least 2 more high draft picks. If the new CBA is in place and there is a rookie payscale as has been speculated then how could you pass on a franchise QB to turn us around?

Depends mainly on who we get as the Vet QB. If it's Orton or better, we let them start and sit the kid for the next year or two. If it's lesser, such as Brodie Croyle, we let Luck start and let him mentor from the sidelines. Also, depends on how much JR pushes for the kid to get out there and sell tickets. I personally believe that'll be the deciding factor, regardless of who we get to coach, if we pick Luck up this draft.

If Thomas Davis is retained, Williams comes back, and the o-line gets backed to where it was, there is no reason we cant finish next year at .500 or better. Luck doesnt have to be anything spectacular, and we are already seeing improvement in our young WRs. Sign a FA D lineman or two and keep Smith and things will turn around quick

that's a lot of "if."

the biggest one of all seems to be the popular choices around here. luck has not committed to the draft and we're not going to sign a college coach to head coach this team. it's not going to happen.

give clausen a chance to develop. the QBs we have are clearly in no position to be successful. lame duck head coach, offensive line where two key components are getting a lot older, and one truly proven option at WR.

good point. Im all for giving clausen a chance to develop and using our top pick to address another need. There is no doubt he has improved, these next few weeks will be telling with some difficult games remaining assuming the opponents arent resting their players yet

Behind WHAT veteran? We aren't going to draft Luck and then pick up a vet(that's worth starting) and push Clausen to the 3. If we finish the season 1-15 or 2-14 and we draft the quarterback everyone says is the closest thing to a sure thing since Elway and we let him sit behind a) journeyman QB b)the guy that just led us to 1-15 or c) an old washed up QB, the fan base will go absolutely ape sh*t. If he gets drafted, IMO he will at the very least go into camp into a head to head battle with Jimmy. If he's the savior folks say he is then he will win the job with relative ease. On the other hand, I'm waiting for the day he says he staying in school so everyone just feels like a fool.

My brain is fried from trying to figure out who our next coach and maybe QB will be I can't think straight. I'm ready to just sit back and watch this thing unfold. It will either spiral into two times the train wreck were already witnessing(if that's possible) or we will pull the same stunt the Falcons and Bucs have the past few years. Who the hell knows at this point?

You got it right on that last sentence.. it's what everyone should be doing anyhow. there is no way in hell any of us have a clue what coach is coming in..

to fry your brain over it is crazy.. ;)

He's a Clausen fanboy, that's how.

I love how people keep saying "Sign a good vet" like they are just growing on trees. Seriously, what good vet is going to come here and want to be a backup. Why would Orton, who might set the single season record for yards, sign the next year as a backup? You guys are out of your friggin minds.

It's gonna be Clausen, Moore, Rookie next year, get used to it.

The draft will solely depend on the coach we bring in. If we bring in a guy who is going to build off of what we have in place then it's very likely we don't select a QB. He could opt to trade down and try to soup up the team in areas of need.

Also, don't completely rule out Moore coming back. All indications show that Hurney will be back. Moore's value has diminished around the league now. His best value and best football comes through us. If he is actually good and not a victim of the teams woes I totally would expect Hurney to try and resign him. I fully expect Clausen to make some leaps in his game next season as well.

If we can find a decent backup-starter filler QB like a Gradkowski, Batch, Fitzpatrick, Kitna type, I say start the Vet. If its working, keep it going and keep Luck on the sidelines learning for the year. If its clear the QB is holding us back and we have the potential to do big things, start Luck or whoever we draft.

But its difficult for me to judge because most top first round draft picks seem to play at the get go (i.e. Bradford this year) and its worked out. So, I see no problem with either scenario, I'd be fine either way...as long as we can get some wins.

How come when a simple question is asked in a thread, people can't answer it? Mr. Scot didn't ask anyone to post their GM mission statement and resume. Go to the draft forum and post your "I know how to rebuild the Panthers" crap there.

I actually think some tangents can make for interesting discussion.

With that said, I do prefer that people address the central question before they go off on one

Orton cause he's the best of the bunch, and since this is just pure speculation anyways, why not shoot for the moon? ;)

I can honestly see Croyle, Gradkowski, or another backup come here next year to compete for the starting spot. With Fox gone, it most likely will finally be an open competition for the #1 spot.
