Jason LaCanfora thinks the Panthers have "a trick up their sleeves"

Ah, the Panthers have a card up the sleeve. A trump card! That is what I'm talking about. If we got an offensive genius to be our head coach, and Ron Rivera to be our DC (plus having Luck), I say the Panthers go 16-0 next season. (Assuming the 18 game schedule isn't in place next year, I hope it never gets in place.)

We will know whether we have a shot at Andrew Luck in exactly ten days.

There will be a lockout effective immediately after March 3rd, and this will HELP in the negotiation of a new CBA. Nothing meaningful between the union and the owners will happen before that time, but the rhetoric will step up in the media.

The Panthers will not reach a contract agreement with a new head coach until after the new CBA is set in stone, but this date is unknown. That the date is unknown does not favor Luck being taken by the Panthers in the first round, here is why:

Listen carefully here: If the new CBA is not finalized BEFORE the 2011 draft (April 28th), then any agreement on the rookie salary cap cannot be retroactively effective for the 2011/12 season, and would not take effect until the 2012 draft.

This is a problem for the Panther-Luck relationship, because it would be highly uncharacteristic of Jerry Richardson to sign a rookie to a 30-50 million dollars-guaranteed contract, one year before such contracts cease to exist. In this case, Richardson would wait one more year to sign a QB.

Secondly, it doesn't make sense that he would squander the superior economic position he has created for the Panthers franchise which he carved out of his own hide with the 2010 lame duck season. Finally, if the CBA negotiations stretch into the summer, this lends itself to poor rookie development, which is a serious problem for any QB hoping to start the 2011 football season. My point is this: If you are hoping for a Luck signing, then you are also praying for a quick solution to the CBA woes, and your hope contradicts the expectations of Richardsons lack of optimism regarding a swift CBA negotiation. I am not saying a protracted negotiation is a nail in Luck's coffin with the Panthers, but I have made a case for his going elsewhere.

Finally, we know a lot more about who will not be a head coach for the Panthers than we do about who will. The Panthers organization will not pursue the following coaches: Russ Grimm, Jim Harbaugh, John Gruden, Brian Billick, Tom Cable, Bill Cowher. Despite what you may hear in the media soon, Rob Ryan is also not in the running.

    • I mean I just don't understand the argument. Baker and Sam both have been pro bowl QBs post their time here. And you just said yourself that is due to him having a damn good roster around him and they are well coached. You're even saying the bad baker is still there somewhere, but he is in a good organization with good roster and coaching that they are getting the best out of him. Why does Baker and Sam get all that benefit of the doubt but when it comes to Bryce it must be a BY9 problem, not an org or team problem?  Hell I got a guy below you arguing with me that Chark/Hurst/Mingo sucked because Bryce wouldn't throw them open. It's ridiculous how far the stretch goes.
    • Correct.  It’s really hard to get open in the NFL when opposing defenses gameplan and cheat coverage/routes on all your players because they know your QB can’t make certain throws/plays.   magically no one that comes to Carolina can get open or make plays with the ball in their hands…..it’s like there is one singular common dominator to it all.  BY makes playing defense way too easy.   NFL players are too good to allow one side to cheat coverage and not respect all the potential threats of a route  so you can dial up a great play.  But if corners and safeties just cheat coverage and know X and Y happening on route/threats….getting open gets hard when they just play it one way.  Getting open has a lot to do with the different threats a WR can pose on a given play.
    • Kinda depends how you look at it both were 3rd round draft pics.  Nico was nothing before stroud and tank came in with stroud.  If both were on the panthers would young have them doing well and starting or would their stats be low.  I really dont know the answer to that.  None of the panthers wrs have left and did well either but personally i feel neither of nico or tank would do much on the panthers.
