Brian Murphy made an immediate impact in his 1st season as Special Teams Coordinator for the Vikings in 2009 after spending the previous 3 seasons as an assistant coach for the Vikings. The return and coverage units along with the kicking game was a key element in the Vikings NFC North title team that advanced to the NFC Championship game. The 2009 Vikings special teams units ranked #9 in the respected Dallas Morning News analysis by veteran NFL writer Rick Gosselin after finishing #25 in 2008.

Murphy oversaw a group that sent a pair of players to the Pro Bowl- coverage man Heath Farwell and return man Percy Harvin. Farwell returned from knee surgery that cost him all of the 2008 season to resume his leadership role on the special teams. Harvin burst on the scene as a rookie with a pair of kickoff return TDs, setting a Vikings record as the only player with 2 kickoff return scores in a season or a career.
