Something I noticed when researching Mello Dotson

If you weren't aware, we picked up another waived CB from the waiver wire, basically swapping M.J. Devonshire for Mello Dotson. Yeah it's not overly exciting stuff, but I'm just chilling. Anyway, I noticed Dotson on a PFF draft list that ranked the best remaining after day two was complete. He wasn't the only one though.

3. Mello Dotson, Kansas
Dotson is a steady, experienced cornerback with an adequate build for the position. His lack of true stickiness in coverage may limit him to more of a rotational or spot-starting role, but he has a place in the league, especially for teams that play more press and man coverage.

3. Mitchell Evans, Notre Dame
Evans doesn't have the rare movement skills to set him apart as a potential top-60 pick in the NFL, but his floor is balanced and high as a TE3 with the potential to move into a contributing TE2 role due to reliable blocking and hands through contact.

5. Cam'Ron Jackson, Florida
Jackson's massive 6-foot-6 and 328-pound frame is designed to clog the A-gaps and free up linebackers to make tackles. He's earned at least a 76.0 run-defense grade across the past three seasons. Teams in search of a late-round run stopper should be interested in Jackson, even if he is likely to be just an early-down player.

1. Lathan Ransom, Ohio State
Toughness and tenacity are Ransom's calling cards, which he makes good use of in all facets of the game. While he may lack the tools some other prospects have, he has the instincts and awareness to make up for it.

I just found it interesting, is all. Some want to downplay PFF, and in many ways, it should be taken with a grain of salt. But I've always said that it's a tool, and obviously it's very much in the minds of the Panthers now that Eric Eager is part of the the franchise, and the importance of PFF's analyses extends beyond the first and second rounds. It goes deep, all the way through---thorough!

Yes, the OP mentions him - Eric Eager.

He was head of R&D for PFF

Yep. I've pointed it out numerous times. Our VP of Analytics basically had that same role for PFF.

To add on - One of our UDFA's that I think will make the 53: 

4. Luke Kandra, Cincinnati

Kandra's athleticism and measured approach to the game give him the floor of a solid zone scheme backup and an average starter's ceiling. The end result will depend on his ability to play with better pad level and flexibility.

Dotson seems more like a safety to me. I think he could be a solid Cover 2 corner or robber type because of his size, vision, and ball skills. He's just a bit slow. He kind of reminds me of Roman Harper. But Dotson would have to become a much better tackler to play safety full time.

      He’s set financially for life barring complete fiscal lunacy. He has $12.3 million guaranteed. Think about that. Twelve million three hundred thousand dollars, he’ll be 28 years old when his contract is up and he’s completely forgotten about if he never plays another down in the NFL if he so chooses. Say after taxes he ‘only’ brings home $6M (fire your accountant territory) and parks $4M in a run of the mill mutual fund… good God… What I’m getting at, IF homie ain’t feeling the NFL, he has 12,300,000 reasons to take the fewest NFL edition ass kickings as possible while waiting out his very wealthy non-football future.  Obviously completely talking out of my a$$ with this… but if you hated contact, didn’t want to live with a completely wrecked body for the rest of your life and you know you’re set financially… what path would you take, assuming you’re cool with being a quitter (not calling him a quitter, I’m just playing out a scenario)? Why do so many first rounders bust? Where was he before his one year wonder if he was such a stud?  Everybody likes the dude on a personal level. How could you not? …. but I like seeing a winning product even more. He doesn’t play like his head is in the game. The Why is where the speculation lies and helps to clarify if his issues are ‘fixable’ or not.

      Very likely that he needs another season or two to really find his groove.  It very well may not be here where he has his best season. He’s a physical standout, but he can’t seem to get his focus and mentality right. That non-catch where he didn’t get his second foot in bounds was a truly awful display of this. Every professional in this game makes that catch.  Last week, it was clear that he wasn’t playing in top gear.  Like so many young people these days, he wants success without working hard.  He wants maximum reward for minimum effort. He wants to rest on talent. But talent alone won’t cut it.  The foolishness of youth and inexperience.  He can have it all if he wants it.  Seems like he’s content to be a social media star and a forgettable football player.
