S Fowler on Panthers last drive

I think he probably missed a couple and the pass rush caused him to miss a couple. So in that case, it comes down to play design: if your QB is limited in his arsenal, run the plays that, oh I don't know, worked on the previous possessions? I understand Arizona's defense tightened up a bit on the last drive but hell, they tried tightening up the one before that and couldn't.

What worked on previous possessions was no longer relevant. Arizona was no longer focusing on containment rush with soft zone behind it. They were playing aggressively again. The biggest thing that changed on that possession is that Arizona was just forced to actually start playing D again vs. hanging back simply trying to avoid giving up a big chunk play.

The one thing Scott Fowler didn't mention was that Arizona started blitzing the hell out of Bryce on that final drive daring him to throw fast and beat them with his arm. Canales and Bryce had no answer. If it weren't for penalties the drive would have been over in 4 plays with 0 positive yards gained, most likely only negative ones from sacks.

He kinda did "So how do you solve Arizona’s suddenly fearsome pass rush? Screens. Quick hitters. Chuba Hubbard in the flat. Maybe even a shovel pass to a tight end. There was plenty of time — what there wasn’t was plenty of yardage, nor enough flexibility from Canales."

I know we got some eagerly looking forward for the PFF grades and access to that all22.....to build the garbage time checking down Bryce was actually pretty dang good Sunday and it was once again, everyone else.

I want to see if Bryce was ignoring open receivers in the short to mid-range. We needed to move fast but we didn't necessarily need big chunks. We had time to have some 8-10 yard plays.

It sure looked like Chuba was open in the flat repeatedly. He may not have been but it looked it. He absolutely was on the intentional grounding but I'll grant Bryce wasn't going to be able to throw towards the other side of the field in that circumstance.

AZ didn't even have a good pass rush.  We just declare it great because Bryce imploded when pressure got in.  Murray found himself in that same type scenarios Bryce did.  Instead of it resulting in horrible turnovers.....he made a couple really big plays when the auto pressure got in.

Canales/Bryce solved nothing.  Cardinals implemented the give you free short passes in exchange for clock strategy.   What happens there is generally the team you easily beat gets back into the game to some degree.  Cardinals just saw the worst case variety of it.   But played D the final series and ended it with relative ease.

has a team ever failed so hard at end of game?

The first half 2 min possession was worse imo.  They took 1 minute to get off 3 plays.  The first play was a run and then I thought they were trying to run the clock out with 2 mins and 3 timeouts.

A minor exercise that I think shows what one of the biggest flaws is.  Just watch the first throws in each video.  Only a 30 second watch for each.  And go .75 speed at the snaps.

Just look at the footwork in their dropback from shotgun.  Check out Kyler too.  Bryce cannot perform a basic 5 step drop in real game-time.

Russell is deliberate, striding, 5-step drop.  The steps are quick, good lengths, creating spacing from the line, even with the OL getting pushed back, it still allows him to step back into the throw.

Bryce is too slow and he has his feet almost meet mid air skip-hop stepping.  He slows down his feet as he's reading in his drops...so in a panic, runs backward and loses the ball due to poor security and an inability to outrun IDLs.  If he just had a good/to decent 5-step drop, he'd have the space to see things but he's not.  he's getting swallowed up due to his poor technique.

I think that's what I've been noticing even outside his bad footwork.  He slows down as he's reading during his drops.  So even when it's a deeper drop, he's just swallowed up.  He's not playing quick enough.

The offense has been moving like it has 2 minutes to get a play off. Its a struggle to get the ball snapped before the play clock runs out. That's a serious problem.

    • I think we pick it up and then someone else ends up emerging as the QB next year and we end up cutting him in year 5 and eating it.  That would be the most on brand thing to happen.
    • Evero has his faults, but even in that loss, the team only gave up 20 points. Your post gets to the heart of the matter. We are not a talented team on defense at this time. Some of our younger guys may develop w/more playing time, but for now we have no impact players at LB or EDGE. We could really use a ball-hawking S on the back end as well. We have exactly two players that have to be accounted for on every play, D. Brown, and J.Horn. Mike Jackson has been solid. The other starters would probably be backups on most the upper echelon NFL teams. We really can't expect this team to a Top 10 defense with such a lack of talent. All things considered I've been somewhat impressed with how much better they have played this year.   https://www.teamrankings.com/nfl/stat/opponent-points-per-game   https://www.teamrankings.com/nfl/stat/opponent-average-team-passer-rating We are in the top 15 in terms of points allowed per game (22.6) and top 12 in defensive passer rating (88.9). And, we are doing this without a formidable PASS RUSH. Even our rushing defense has improved. We are #16 in rushing yards allowed per game (116) compared to 179 per game last season. https://www.teamrankings.com/nfl/stat/opponent-rushing-yards-per-game I wouldn't cry if Evero moved on after the season, but his defense isn't the biggest worry for our team.
