First time hearing this. Jfc

Gettleman basically wrecked a team that should have been a dynasty solely due to ego. He, among other things:

  • Forced Jordan Gross into retirement after 2013
  • Cut literally all of our receivers after the 2013
  • Tagged and then cut Josh Norman, losing him for nothing, solely due to a spat with his agent
  • Cut all of our cornerbacks before the 2016 season

We basically destroyed our offensive line, wide receiver corps, and secondary in single seasons. We only got through that because of the core that had been set up in pre-Gettleman drafts. Dude was actual trash as a GM and flamed out in NY for a reason.

Gettleman specifically did not and there are multiple stories of him changing his mind at the last second and being like “I’m the GM it’s a gut call blah blah blah”

all the scouts had told Devonte Adams he was going to be a panther, then at the last second gettleman decided he wanted Benjamin exclusively because of the catch in the national championship game.

he did the same thing with andrew thomas in New York.

First I heard of that, I would have liked him even less. He was a scout himself. I think Marty would have listened to the scouts.

the thing that got me about his big catch radius and height obsession was the height, he chased that because Cam was sailing some throws and he wanted taller WRs.

Remaining blind to the fact that the ball would be high relative to the aim point. A higher aim point doesn’t help you there. You’d have to be pretending you were throwing to Smitty all the time for that to work.

The Giants are still flailing around in the mess he made up there too. Dude was an atrocious GM and just caught lightning in a bottle with those bargain basement free agents going into 2015 and his ego convinced him he could replicate that over and over again while he annihilated rosters.

Reminder that brown was supposed to be Herbie.

Love Brown, but we would be better off if we had Herbert. Imagine a world where we didn’t have to roll through all the QBs we have since Teddy.

Imagine adding to that not wasting 2 1sts, 3 2nds and a few 3rd/day 3 picks on Sam, Baker, Corral and Young.

Our 2023 1st might have been Jalen Carter to help ease the need for Brown. Pretty sure I’d take the Herbert avenue and still have Moore and CMC for Herbert. I’d also have still traded Burns for the bounty!

He was drafted in 2012. I'm talking the 2011 draft. We drafted Cam then a bunch of guys who flat out didn't belong in the NFL.

Man, this revisionist history on Marty is funny. He was great at 1st rounders although I think we way overrate some of the players. For example, Stewart and Williams were solid but neither is in the top 50 in rushing in NFL history. They had 2 pro bowls in 22 combined years.

Again, he rarely missed like Otah or the trades, but we went to the playoffs 3 times in his 14 years as a GM. I think “his” best team was 2015, which a collab with Gettleman who IMHO did a good job of filling around Luke, Cam, Greg and Norman to get a great DL (Star, Short, Ealy, Allen) and OL (Norwell, Turner) that was one good ref’d and coached game away the peak.

Honestly, Herbert would've likely busted here.

I liked JStew but he honestly might be the most overrated player amongst Panthers fans. Only one 1000 yard season and only two double digit TD seasons and all of that came within his first two seasons. He was a good player, don't get me wrong. But he was terrible ROI on a 1st round RB pick that also limited the ROI on our other (better) 1st round RB. If you look through his stats and tell me he was a mid-round pick it's like sweet. Nice pick. But if you look through his stats and tell me he was a 1st rounder it's like oof. Not great.

To be fair, regarding Stew and Williams, their numbers would be a lot higher if they didn’t have to share their carries. They have great yards per carry numbers.

Rhule didn't develop much if anything and he used QBs to blame his lack of NFL skills and knowledge.

Without a different staff he probably would have been replaced the next year when Fritterer came in and started making everything worse.

Right, but again, we used 2 1sts when we just had our 2nd best rushing game ever on a low cost FA acquisition. Chubba has almost half the rushing yards that Stewart had for his career.

I just think we list every Hurney first as if they were all amazing and some were just OK (for firsts) at not marquee positions. His best legacy was that the 1st rounders didn’t bust a ton like the rest of his rounds.

Well having a healthy Brown is the biggest difference IMO. Best player on the D. last years average was 5.2 yards a run and it's 4.5 this year so far. And that's with Brown back.

Agreed. I do think our free agent acquisitions + our safeties being better against the run have helped also. If we can figure out our pass coverage issues in the middle third of the field, I would actually like our overall defense (at least like it enough).

That might be true. No way to know but with all the picks we wouldn’t have wasted on Darnold, Baker, Corral and Young and having DJ Moore and CMC (Samuel and Robbie too, year 1), there’s probably a way better chance that he wouldn’t have busted.

Unfortunately, we’ve had poo everywhere but maybe Rhule and Marty would’ve done OK. I’m still sure that our talent level would be much better by not having to trade CMC, Moore and all those damn picks to end up with Young at the end.
