You're basing this off of one season as a starting QB?  The offensive line he had was terrible, yet he still threw for nearly 4000 yards.  He has a big arm.  Granted he has some faults but So did Darold, so did Mayfield but they changed.

Winston had several years of gunslinging as you say.  Howell had one season.  The only reason they moved on from him was falling into Daniels.

I think of everyone on this list Howell has as many good qualities as any.

I’d give Howell a shot over any of those other options.

So looking at the current standings we are 15th in draft order.  Several teams will probably pass us especially if we actually lose out.

There are 3 teams that most definitely will be drafting a QB

Jets, Raiders and Saints

Cardinals (Murray), Dolphins (Tua) and Houston (Stroud) with question marks

Browns Gabriel and Sanders but maybe they jump on another QB if they get high pick

Titans (Ward), Commanders (Daniels), Falcons (Penix) Giants (Dart) Vikings (McCarthy) all young QBs but most likely wont' be drafting a QB.

Dallas (Dak) and Bengals (Burrow) doubtful

I doubt Jets, Raiders and Saints surpass us in wins.

So we'd be in the window for the 4th best QB in a bad QB class.

I am also basing this off of the fact that he has gotten passed around like candy in his extremely short NFL career and the fact that he is largely a 3rd string QB at the moment.

The reason they moved on and GOT Daniels was because they recognized he was not going to be a starting caliber QB.

Don't forget that he was also part of what was acknowledged to be and almost entirely had been(minus Mr. Irrelevant Brock Purdy) one of the worst QB classes of the past 20 years.

This same thing has happened to Winston recently(only 31) after years as a starter. Gets passed around from team to team each offseason and can't even beat Shell of Russell Wilson out as 2nd string QB.

This is just the plight of true gunslingers in the modern era. I have discussed this ad nauseum on the Huddle for probably 4-5 years now. It hasn't changed over that timespan.

I am fine with bringing them in to compete or be backups/3rd stringers. But you need to have a real QB plan.

If that is the primary plan, it's just going to lead to those 30-40% winning percentages that they come with.

I've seen QBs come back and succeed. If Darnold and Mac Jones can do it, Howell isn't necessarily dog poo. I'm not saying he can thrive, but I'm also not saying it's impossible.

Many of the problems these kids have are based upon the fact that they are immediately thrust into the spotlight before they're ready. They should be sitting, just like in the old days. They should primarily be sitting and learning, not being put under a buzzer where the primary focus of the higher-ups is throwing poo at a wall and seeing what sticks before a rookie contract runs out. I think this is definitely the case where it's obvious that it's a mind thing--bad decisions and/or learning at a slower pace--than a lack of physical tools. Sometimes different people, theories and concepts are coming so fast that the kid is screwed from the start, and we never get to see a legit sample size because things keep changing too fast.

So I'm not necessarily phased by being passed around "like candy." If they're some good bones there, we may as well take a look. Being in QB hell, you shouldn't dismiss QBs out of hand. Some of these guys are still young.

I would bet that if Howell were in Minnesota or Green Bay, he'd be better. Darnold is legit better, and Malik Willis looked like a different QB the last time that we saw him.

Lance, Howell, Levis, they're all guys I'd look at.

To the OP's greater point, I just think they're actually are some guys in this class that could possibly be legit, and it's not as bone-dry as some are assuming.  Even Drew Allar might one day be legit.

I doubt they pick up his option.  He'll be backup next season.  We have to address this position either through the draft or Free Agency.

I would be absolutely shocked if he is gone after this year. It seems like wishful thinking to believe that Tepper is going to admit this mistake, pull the plug, and, most importantly, accept the shame that he doesn't know what he thinks he knows.

I can maybe see Dalton being gone. There has certainly been exploratory moves made this season at the position. Ultimately, it has been just that, but I don't think Hooker or White passed through here being eyed as possible starter Young replacements.

Young will be here in 2026 but I seriously doubt they pick up his option.  He's not worth the big money they would have to give him for the 5th year.

So, who is it you want?

A solid veteran QB that can be at least outside the bottom 20% of NFL starters and a younger drafted QB.

I don't have specifics because we have no idea who would be available(or interested) at this point. When that becomes available this offseason, I will definitely post up my "wants."

Same with the draft class. I am very down on this class at the moment but it seems deep at #2 QB's.

I don't think he can be on the roster in any capacity. If/when the choice to move on is made, then it needs to be decisive. You can't just keep him as a backup, with the very real possibility of returning him to action. Conversely, if he is any sort of competitor, why would he accept a backup role, and not demand to be released or traded from the team?

That really didn't answer the question...

Maybe the jags release Trevor? I dunno just get someone

I don't think the Jags ditch him yet. Their offense is slightly better than their D and both are below the average. I wish tho. I could see them trying to upgrade at WR and continuing to build out the team. They still sit at over .500 with a first year HC.

They are just going to have to take a swing and make due.

Silver lining. The ceiling is super low. Somebody like Minshew, Winston, or Mariota could come in here and do better. We are at the literal bottom right now. Like Clausen bottom almost, any of those FAs are an upgrade.

Plus Dan will have another offseason to add some pieces, so there will be a team waiting on them when they get here.

Don’t go off the available FA lists. There are always other guys that come available to make cap room or whatever.

Anyone worth trading a low pick for?

Trey Lance - he is young and needs reps. Looked good in preseason

Justin Fields - showed flashes, maybe the QB whisperer can help him find himself as a passer

QB whisperer? None of us would bet our life savings on that.

    • Same. I would prefer a MNF game earlier in the season. As if more likely has some significance in case things go south this season. If we perform well enough we could even get another game forced to a Sunday night spot later in the season.
    • Wanted to jump into this thread. Although I do not post anymore I do look in as there are a few old friends around. Loved hearing some of the names you mentioned.  Another  oldie is NanceUSMC.  He is the one who got me here from the old Observer forum.  Good guy and smart football guy. I have learned a lot from a lot of good Huddlers over the years, Over time. we have sadly lost a few who left this earth too soon.  Anyone who know of someone, it would be nice to try to make a list.  One of the more recent, CosmoGirl,  was someone that kind of hit hard.  Life sucks sometimes. Some of the best times were when we had our own tailgate and could meet up in person.  I think it made us better. Several dedicated volunteers, lead by LiverMush, started setting things up in the wee hours of each gameday morning.  Don't know all those regulars but I remember JakeFlake was one.  For you newbies...each game,  a Huddler (or a group) sponsored the food for each tailgate.  Eating was free but a donation was asked for.  At the end of the year those donations were used to buy bicycles for Toys for Tots.  Over the years Huddlers bought a lot of new bikes for kids for Christmas.  (I am guessing a couple of hundred each year.)  We had a good time getting together, got to make friends in person, and then got to feel like you were doing something good. It was truly a community. I got to meet Dan Morgan at one of our tailgates...he brought pizza from his restaurant.  How many of you remember that?  Glad the restaurant did not make it....lol. Not only have people changed, and come and gone.....but the entire nature and purpose has changed. Nothing lasts forever and we move on but we still like to think about good times. Same reason we take pictures. Want to ask a question I have not seen anyone else mention......who remembers    "The Couch" ?  We have argued, laughed, lived the ups and downs of football and dealt with a little real life along the way.  A thanks to  the Mods who keep this going.  I am sure they sacrifice a lot of their time out of love for the forum and the Panthers. Take care my friends and be well.  I will close with my new favorite quote which I think is greatly needed in these difficult times.
    • My top-5 JAGS: 1. Tommy Tremble: May not ever be top-tier, but has been solid and you never doubt the effort. 2. Cade Mays: Not bad for a 6th rounder. Hated to see him go. 3. Brady Christensen: One of the most versatile backup OLs in the NFL. Hopefully we re-sign him. 4. Trevis Gipson: Quietly was really solid depth last season. Glad we brought him back. 5. Brycen Tremayne: Has been solid depth at WR, flashing at times last year.
