J Person article on Canales and game plan and Rico

Recommended Posts

I just can't pin it on DC. The guy is constantly walking on eggshells due to Bryce's inconsistencies and timid nature. He had WR's open and Bryce didn't hit them. He asked his first overall pick to take on the spotlight and he didn't.

Yes we should have ran Rico. But Bryce could have ran that first TD in. T Mac open on that crosser but Bryce hesitated. I think DC is asking Bryce to show us who he is, and is paying the consequences until A. Bryce gets his poo together, B. Bryce flames out and we get another QB.

Biggest mistake imo was going for 2pt in the 3rd qtr. That hurt our momentum. Just take the FG and see how it plays out. Or if you're going to do it all, give Rico a chance.

I gotta be honest, this feels like more than just bad coaching. This feels like proving a point. I'm really beginning to wonder if the only way to get Bryce off this team is to prove he can't step up when it matters. No coach can really be this stupid can they?

I've said for a long time there appears to be some sort of mandate from higher up that is forcing Bryce into the starting role and keeping him there regardless of what any metric or eye test says. Now whether that's Morgan or Tepper at this point, this feels like Canales may be trying to prove that Atlanta is the anomaly, Bryce isn't the guy, and he needs a new QB, and the only way to show that is to get humiliated on prime time, since the only thing Tepper seems to respond to is national embarrassment.

Of course, I could be 4d chessing this thing way too much, and if I am, maybe I should be the next HC for 50m bucks. If I'm wrong and Canales really is this stupid, lawd help us all.

I thought that too

Ie trying to prove ‘look, he cant do it under the lights on the big stage’

honestly, im Not sure he is that bright

then again, how many coaches and  offenses have to  fail to prop up young before this ends

i blame both canales and young for that defensive carnage Monday night   Both of them

…and ill say too, if part of the problem is after 12 games into the season, the receivers are still too deep in their routes then

either new receivers are needed

Or new coaching

or the routes are failures

or the qb

or all 4

they have had preseason, mini camps, training camp, practice and the season

their coach was a receivers coach and now the OC

and they still cant consistently complete a pass

not a good look

he has business being the OC and HC

he isnt McVay and he isnt Reid

Yes. Good point on the timid   I didn't focus on it as Canales should know by now  Young goes into his shell

ill tell you honestly, i saw how young looked in the tunnel coming out with the team without his helmet on

he looked scared shitless

he played scared shitless

one podcaster looking at the all 22 film said Young was thoroughly confused by Salah’s use of Mustafa and basically became paralyzed .. similar to what  happened in 2023 with  Bates in  Atlanta

Salah as DC greater than Canales as Oc

For all the Bryce apologists, the Canales apologists are almost worse.

No way.  People that support Bryce are entrenched and rabid.  It isn’t the same level of commitment.
You can be equally annoyed but those two groups are not equally invested.
I have or had other valid reasons for not wanting Canales prematurely fired. We have had a revolving door of coordinators, GMs, HCs for too long and I think we are seeing the benefits of continuity in the development of some of these younger players and the draft process that acquires them.
I am really not a big personal fan of Canales.  I was never a fan of getting an Offensive minded flavor of the week coach whether it was Canales or any other trendy play caller pick.

I also think I understand how huge the job is and know his experience level makes it a given that there will be frequent missteps.
I made a policy of way more patience than I naturally possess in the case of Morgan and Canales.

But I am not riding Canales to the bottom while blaming he doesn’t have this or that.

I have felt that I would like to see him get another QB before folding on him, because I wouldn’t wish Bryce on anybody.

At the same time some poo is wearing thin.

Canales outsmarts himself on a very consisent basis. In some ways, he is one of the most ill suited to be head coach of the Tepper tenure.

For some reason this is becoming a disturbing trend in the NFL. Teams are shutting down one part of their offense without causation from the opposition. Shane Steichen did it an overtime loss against Kansas City last week with the best back in the NFL. Pete Carroll allowed Chip Kelly to completely abandon the run game against Dallas the week before he was fired in Oakland as the OC. Matt Lafleur abandoned the pass instead choosing to rely on a bottled up run game when we clearly were having issues with the passing game. Big brain play callers some of them HCs are what the league wanted along with high powered offense and these dudes are making some of the dumbest situational calls I've ever seen. At least most of them are young and can learn, Canales included. I remember Norv Turner trying to throw the ball around the yard in a certain SuperBOWL, going in at halftime down 13-6. Emmitt Smith said get me the d*mn ball and took over in the 2nd half. Remember Kyle Shanahan in the 2nd half vs. the Patriots? This shite happens to the best and the brightest. We are just actively seeing it play out in real time just like Atlanta and Dallas fans before us.

Also, not saying Canales is going to become either of those, just begging/hoping for our sanity he gets his shite together if he's going to be our HC.

He owes it to his best offensive player to sit down and have the conversation. Listen man, I got caught up in the game and I thought I saw opportunities there and I fuged up. I'm sorry. I should've fed you the ball.

Hmmm... not a good start. Maybe I'm reading too much into this but after the guy who has been carrying your offense expresses frustration with his sudden lack of use and your HC just blows it off and confirms they haven't even talked, your PR team decides to use the guy who should be his backup as their poster boy hyping this week's game? Yikes. Hard not to interpret that as another slap in the face.

Pretty obvious people on mint wanted Bryce to have a big performance on prime time.

Ironically their game plan blew up in their face. Nothing ever works when you try to force it to happen. Now they all look like incompetent fools.

This is kind of what I mean. It's the sams parade of excuses Bryce has gotten. They are just +1 years ahead.

This is where basically everyone is going to be about Canales next season.

He would be a fool to return here, TBH.

Money makes people do foolish things but with Hubbard already getting paid I don't see it happening from any angle.

He damn sure isn't giving this team a discount. Plus the text leads me to think he is already looking forward forward

Pete Carroll literally cost himself a 2nd championship with that nonsense! Power running teams throwing on the 1 is just self hate at its finest.

    • This is a good take it really is to the point dc needs to let the world see the real byoung b/c right now everyone in the media and tepper has had blinders on when it comes to young.  Its hard to even know where the panthers are at skill player wise with such horrible qb play.  I doubt it but legette may be a probowl wr he just cant throw the ball and catch it.  I am just so sick of every excuse in the book for byoung.  LIstened to a podcast and the guy was going over how many different options byoung had on the int and all of them were ok except for the one where he threw an int.  He said the play could be run by a hs qb and they would typically make a good decision.
    • I certainly have my complaints about Canales but I'm not ready to fire him yet for a couple of reasons. First and foremost, Tepper has made this one of the least appealing jobs in the league. Morgan and Canales are here to begin with in large part because guys higher on the wish list take other jobs. If you fire Canales you're gonna end up replacing him with another third tier candidate who wasn't being seriously considered by other teams with openings. That's just the reality of the situation right now as far as I can tell. Secondly, despite plenty of room for critique, we are 6-6 despite the worst QB play in the league. That's really damn hard to pull off in the modern NFL. Especially when your D isn't dominant. Our D is greatly improved but is still a slightly below average overall defense ranking 18th in yards per game allowed and 20th in points allowed. Going 6-6 with atrocious QB play and slightly below average defensive play is pretty damn impressive. Even more impressive when you also factor in that we're in the red on turnovers differential at -3. When you combine league worst QB play with slightly below average D and negative turnover differential honestly you'd expect to be in play for the #1 overall pick, not 6-6 and having just played a game that a win would have you leading the division. So yeah, even though I'm far from sold I advocate for patience with Canales for the time being. If you ask me if I'm bringing him back next year, I'm a yes barring a catastrophic meltdown down the stretch which admittedly is very much a possibility.
