We have a Dave Canales Problem

Coaching and a massive lack of execution which falls on Canales. Monday nights loss was 100% on him.

Dave Canales continues to put this team at a disadvantage week in and out with personnel decisions. So far we’ve seen him go with Corbett over Mays. Killed Rico’s momentum by having him split carries with Chuba. Went back to not taking advantage of using TMac in the slot last night after doing so last week (only 5/29 routes ran last night were from the slot). Only lets Bryce get comfortable in gun and spread when the score dictates it. Taking a point off the board to go for 2 and call a passing play. Concedes the opening drive after a penalty. We need a weekly Zavala injury to happen for Dave to give Curhan who is the much better guard, playing time.

As far as execution goes the all-22 is gross. Sooooo many examples of guys doing the wrong thing and blowing up plays and this again falls on Dave

The interception in the end zone. This is on Tremble. Tremble is supposed to run along the goal line and take Brown with him. Instead he runs towards back pylon allowing defender to make a play on the ball. Canales mentioned someone running the wrong route during his post game presser. That person would be Tremble.

Sanders decides he doesn’t feel like blocking on this swing pass to Chuba which should’ve been a touchdown.

Add in a couple of drops. A terrible missed DPI call and this game was a complete disaster.

The highs and lows are in large due to Canales.

This guy hits the nail on the headIMG_4770.jpeg.4abd9b2e1bab84ce4d8a125883368a53.jpeg

I’m guessing Dave overcompensates this week and comes out running the ball no matter what while the Rams are putting up 7’s on us real quick. Should be fun…

Sorry. Wrong route or not, that int is on Bryce 100%. He had a ride open run to the end zone. Elite processing says follow your blocker to the corner for an easy walk in TD.

Situational awareness.

I thought I saw Chuba pause slightly, as if he was going to throw to Sanders, but maybe the DBs already had the play diagnosed and blew it up.

That would’ve been even funnier and really summed up the night given it would’ve been an illegal forward pass.

Bryce is clearly throwing the ball forward to Chuba

We have a Bryce Young problem and until it's resolved it's extremely hard to judge our coaching in any significant way. Canales has made mistakes, as any coach will, but he's also called plays that with even moderately average QB play would result in positive outcomes.  Canales' biggest "mistake" is trusting Bryce at all, but then, maybe he's just ensuring he has a new QB to work with next year.  We aren't the only team where players run the wrong routes, we just are one of a couple with a bottom 30 QB.

I think Canales knows what identity he wants for the team (I think), it's just that he is hamstrung by Bryce. He won't make the tough decision to ditch Bryce, likely due to higher-ups. Bryce has been on thin ice in my damned mind for two years. Every season, the question of axing him by the trade deadline looms large (again, in my mind). There is absolutely no way we should've come into this season without a plan B (and I'm not talking the Red Rifle). Canales should've been banging the table for a plan B. I mean, it's just his job on the line.

Brown himself said “they didn’t threaten the flats” so he was able to jump it

This. He’s a new(er) coach and he’s got the worst QB in the league to work with. We have far less of a coaching problem than we do QB problem.

I don’t want this to turn into another Bryce Young thread so I’ll keep it about the offense as a whole and it’s a damn mess. It was even uglier with Dalton behind center

To have this many mental errors this far into the season falls on coaching. We as a team lack consistency because our HC/play calling has zero consistency himself

The Rusty Rifle was never a plan B, he was a friend on the sidelines for Bryce. I also think somehow this organization was completely fooled by the end of last year and the PFF metrics etc. which is an indictment in its own right.

Either way it's time to move on...

Dave IMO does know what he wants to be......it's the coaching tree and offense he has been part of his entire career.

He can't do that   And so you got a weak coach from that philosophy trying to make it without the required QB.  And the QB in that offense, basically is someone that makes up and overcomes the actual offenses aren't actually good by design.

To an extent is is run the ball and have your QB make some aggressive plays downfield.

Dave is in no man's land.  You can't run to setup the 5 yarder.

That's totally fair. I think it's impossible to talk about the mess that is the offense without looking at its QB.

But you are right that there's mental errors. I think that when our margin is as thin as it is, those errors are more obvious than otherwise.... For instance even in the Rams blowout win, there were receivers clearly running the wrong routes given Stafford's expression after some of his misses.

I DO think that Canales should consider giving up play calling to focus on game planning and preparation. I think we often have solid designs etc, execution just falls flat.
