I was a pretty good athlete in my day and yes, you can change your bodies trajectory while in the air. Funny gymnastics is literally based on contorting one's body while in the air. Look, he probably couldn't avoid the hit altogether, but he didn't even attempt avoid it.  In that picture, he was obviously laying the wood, the opposite of trying to check up on a tackle.

Gymnast are 5"3 for a reason and not 6"3 220.

How do you attempt to avoid someone you've already committed your body to tackling, do you know how hard it is to bring a 6"5 (Shough) grown man to the ground in full stride.

The Panthers never should have been in position for this to matter. When we went up 17-10 the Saints actually fumbled on their next drive and a good team actually trying to win their division and lock up a playoff spot would have recovered that fumble and gone on to make the score 24-10. This was a sloppy game from a team known for just that in situations where the pressure is on. And Dave Canales himself basically said the bye week was a factor and that to me is as good of an indicator we should need that we need to prioritize any and all possible head coaching candidate upgrades in the offseason.

Why not just have RBs slide on every single RB Dive?

QBs should not be allowed to slide as a designated runner on a play designed to go right up the middle and then expect the defender to stop what he is doing in a millisecond.  It is absolutely BS.

Years ago I put on my Nostradamus hat and foreetold that the WRs would start avoiding hits by sliding and running out of bounds more. More track and world class sprinters would enter the realm of football and its millions of paydays

I still believe it, honestly Id already be doing if I was a WR....who cares about the public outcry, the sport is heading towards flag-football each year. I think its still within 20 years of happening, but the under handed free throw never took off cause players are too pridefull even if they are scoring more and helping the team win......

Unless its the Superbowl, does it matter to your body if the pass goes for 37 yards or 35 and 4 guys tired to kill me....its business....

Brother, try it juiced up with adrenaline and caffeine against a player/team that's been talking cash money shiit to you. I promise injuries would go up for the defenders trying to avoid hitting/contact.

I already figured it out, new rule the QB must signal(much like a fair catch) he intends to slide and NOT at the last nano second of some NFL defender in full sprint. QB uses his off-ball hand to show he intends on sliding. Then the defender has enough time to try and avoid hitting the QB like was done in every year pre-2010s.....

Solution to this IMO.

QBs and any runner are allowed to slide aka give themselves up. If they fake a slide or sideline step out (ie Mahomes vs Jackson earlier this season), and continue on to gain an advantage, automatic 15 yard unsportsmanlike penalty and game misconduct warning. If they do it again, another 15 yards and automatic ejection. 3 times in a season, 3 game suspension. 4 times, 6 game. Every time after, 6 games. That'll take care of that poo real quick.

Considering he's already on the ground, not difficult at all.

You got me there,

Expecting Ransom to pirouette mid air to avoid grounded man is a tad more difficult I guess.

Not really...

He wasn't.

Took a look back at the clip. Shough is still upright less than 3 yards from Ransom. He dropped to draw the penalty.

A quarterback pulling a stunt to draw a penalty isn't a new thing. Hell, they're often coached to do so.

Shough was asked about it afterward and came clean...

My solution:

Defenders launch with all your might into the QB's head. You're going to get flagged anyway, so punish the QBs who want to slide. It's the same 15 yards if you try to avoid and happen to graze a bitch-made QB flopping like a landed trout, or if you spear him in the chest with your helmet. So go all out. Eventually the QBs will start to question if the free 15 yards is worth the sledgehammer they're about to take to the dome.

Side Note: Having once dated a gymnast who was approximately the size and build of Shawn Johnson, I'd just say don't underestimate their power just because they're petite 😄
