Jeremy Fowler: Don’t be surprised if Carolina makes some big moves on defense

wow lol. I wasn’t a frequent visitor during all the Fitterer years but I remember him arguing for Gettleman at the mention of GM (didn’t even need to say his name), even after he was gone.

Someone said he was kicked off. Suspended, banned… I missed whatever drama led to that.

Scot was defending fitt even this past season.  Weird.

not sure if he got banned but his last barrage of posts he was a little unhinged and seemed unwell.

Yeah Morgan has had one awful draft and one solid draft. And his success to this point has largely hinged on him throwing obscene amounts of money at free agents. Which again literally anyone else could do that.

Anyways. Keep in mind that once upon a time a large majority of the huddle were once rabid Scott Fitterer fans. And I am not exaggerating. There were times where it seemed like folks were about ready to come to blows if anyone had the nerve to question Scott Fitterer's prowess as an evaluator of talent. Quite amusing looking back.

I made a promise to myself and kept it… figured if Bryce got no blame for his horrendous year one it was fair for all.

Free year one for Dan and Canales. Learning on the job year. Then on the clock. So I never stressed too much over their errors in year one.

This will be a big year for both of them.

I don’t think getting Lloyd is a move that says “we’re all in” - and even if they think a guy like Trotter/Allen/Rodriguez could be great in the draft, we need a defensive captain.

Chenal is appealing and my target, but you never know how things are behind the scenes/which players like who/who goes well together and Chenal is probably getting 15-18 per anyways. I get it with Lloyd.

And I don’t think Chubb will be Meagan pricey but we’ll see.

I personally see a trade on the horizon and Lloyd coming in given everything I’ve read between the lines.

It isn’t my money and I want ‘that guy’ at LB again. So I won’t complain unless he gets paid and sucks.

my big things this year are LOT and T in general, and ILB.

C is close behind.

def agree with your first paragraph in particular, Bear Hands.

Serious question. Based off what? Morgan has one of the worst drafts in franchise history followed by what appears to be one of the best. We also don't have a winning season under Dan yet.

He "fixed" our oline by buying 2 guards making us the most expensive unit in the league. Unfortunately, it didn't really produce a lot of results and 2 years later needs major help. Our defense was the worst in nfl history, followed by better, but still below average. He gave 2 years to Dalton, who was already washed up. He's made a few good moves too like Coker as an udfa, we offered him the most $, and the Jackson trade.

At the moment, I'd say his ability to build a team is unknown. He was also assistant during Fitterer's tenure. And for those saying he wasn't making any decisions, you don't get promoted to GM if you've never actually done the job. That'd be like Bill Gates PA getting promoted to CEO just because he was in the same room when he brought him coffee. Morgan was involved in those 3 years of incompetence.

I still think the best GM we ever had was Bill Pollian. From expansion to playoffs in 2 years was quite a feat before he took off for Indy. Overall though, I'd say our GM bar is quite low to hurdle to be the best.

Polian?  Interesting.  You give bad credit to spending money for building parts of the team- but give Polian an A for doing the same thing.

Good conversation.

Based on my opinion.

Devin lloyd is too expensive when you consider other alternatives that would provide us with similar production. I'd much rather have Leo Chenal. He should be much cheaper

I like Chenal, he’s elite run defender. What our defense needs is a 3-down LB that can cover. Lloyd is exactly what we’re looking for

Plenty of country boys would be fine with Charlotte. Just have to show the team and franchise arent dysfunctional AND are not a place to just come cash a check.

I love Charlotte, it's where I'm planning to retire.

But if I was 25-30 years old and making $10M+ a year, it would be WAAAAAAYYYY down the list of cities I'd want to live in.

Supposedly, his college coach (defensive coordinator) Jim Leonhard is the new Defensive Coordinator in Buffalo.  Matt Milano and Shaq Thompson (starters) are free agents.   Buffalo will switch to a 3-4 and will seek LBs.  I predict that Leo Chenal goes there.  In college, he flourished under Leonhard who used him aggressively in the blitz packages.

So I dunno.  Buffalo is over the cap, but nothing they can't work out.  I predict he becomes a Bill, but money talks.

I agree with you about Devin Lloyd.  Every year, there are players who command more money than they are worth.  Morgan needs to stay in his lane.

We do need a guy that can cover.

I don't know if Leo C can or not--not really well read about the free agents.

I am not sure, someone upthread proposed that Leo C is very good at run D not so much in coverage.
I guess my thought was, if he struggles with that maybe we do need to spend more.
If… being the key to it and yeah I don’t know either. (My MO these days is mostly, do the studying after they are Panthers if they are seriously on the radar on March 9 I will probably look at some video).

Gonna indulge my fanboy and say with Morgan and Luke on the scene I trust them to know.

Plus, the fact that the Jags didn’t pick up his 5th year option begs the question why not? A little strange for the projected top FA ILB, former 1st rounder to not have his 5th year option picked up. Maybe they know something that we don’t? Also, he saved by far his best season for a contract year.. Maybe it’s all nothing and he turns out to be a great FA signing, but there’s a few things with Devin Lloyd that would make me hesitant to pay him 20 mill a year.
