Panthers signing WR John Metchie

I feel like XL is square peg round hole with Bryce.  I feel like he could thrive with a QB who pushes the ball down field and can throw a slant

I get it.  He has gotten better running routes, but he is just out of position as a WR so often.  Are his routes consistent?  I still think he could start getting it, but the light is dimming.

Metchie had a great year when Bryce won the heisman.  He gives the Panthers some deep options.  He does not have to catch passes if he can keep the safeties honest, but I expect him to post his highest numbers here.  I imagine he is signing for vet min, and probably was coerced by Bryce.

I have not given up on XL like some here, but I am frustrated and pissed off about his play.

I now doubt we draft a WR, but there are so many uncertainties (Coker's health, XL's play, Metchie, etc).

1. Signed a 1 year, prove it deal with the QB that he helped win the Heisman. That tells me that he hopes to rekindle some of that magic an get a lucrative deal next season. I really hope it works out because that'll be another good receiver on the roster but I'm not holding my breath. The poor man has had to deal with some terrible bad luck; Leukemia, torn ACL, and worst of all, the Jets. Bless his heart.

2. I haven't completely given up on XL, but damn! Just keep your feet inbounds and know where the 1st down line is, that's football 101.

3. WR on day 3 or even another FA is a very viable option. You gotta keep churning the bottom of the roster. Good teams have good depth.

What?!?!

Say you think he can turn into something at some point, but this is a whole lot of praise for someone with less than 700 yards across 3 seasons of his career.

If he was remotely close to being the 3rd best WR on our team right now, the Jets wouldn't have let him walk without tendering him the RFA offer.

tuka... it's the Jets. Garret Wilson had 395 yards in 8 games. Adonai Mitchell had 301 yards in 8 games.

Metchie had 256 yards in 9 total games played down the stretch when the games didn't matter anymore, and he got there in the middle of the season. He also had the most YAC in the WR room. His game film looks better than anyone on this team not named TMac, and end of the season Coker. Not saying he's a super star right now, but he improves Caolina's WR room.

I know what XL is currently.. but I feel like I'm the only one here that wants XL to succeed.

People must have someone in their crosshairs to be considered real fans. Someone on the roster must be the one to carry the brunt of the criticism and that is currently XL. He literally is going into year three on a rookie contract, with a still mediocre QB, and people want him cut or traded. He is extremely physically gifted, had some big moments, struggled as well, but we shouldn't give him a chance to make the next step. We literally had games where our QB threw for a whopping 54 yards, and people are yelling bye XL over a bottom roster WR move who we are clearly just kicking the tires on here. Boy, that accent and awe shucks nature must really piss people off. Or maybe they are mad because he isn't Jamar Chase out of the gate. Either way, it is weird how quickly the hate and general dislike has ratcheted up for this guy this quickly.

For some people, he wasn’t McConkey that night in April 2024 when he was selected. The only thing that would stop that is XL pans out while their guy busts.
There is a certain amount of Morgan hate that plays into it too. It is a black mark on him for the people that did not want him to be GM.

But, it isn’t like XL doesn’t give them ammunition. He has loaded the guns for them, repeatedly.

For me I haven’t seen him used very much the way I expected him to be, when they took him. That is hard to resolve in my mind. I know who I want to blame for it but don’t fully understand the why it went that way part.

Metchie aside, X aside, as well as Horn, I just don't believe that we're done at receiver this offseason. Why? One word: speed.

Agreed. That is something most probably see as a threat we don’t possess. Or enough of it.
