Yas changes his mind again: "Panthers can't afford to take Newton"

Beginning to think Palmer will be a legitimate possibility (dependent on the CBA situation, of course).

This...

Palmer @ 3 years while an understudy learns and develops wouldn't be the worst move in the world for the Panthers...

Of course, getting him out of Cincy might not be a given

He never said it was a rental just that our QB would come through FA or trade. Leaves plenty of options open for younger guys that could be our QB for a long time.

Fixing a QB position in this manner rarely works. If you want to trade for a legit QB prospect it is going to cost you dearly in draft picks (Kolb will cost at least a rd 1 pick, maybe two). If he doesn't pan out (as they usually don't) you set your progress back and ability to really improve back at least 3-5 years.

FA NEVER works. Unless the guy has already had success like Vick and Brees who were both pro bowler before they became free agents. It just doesn't. Evaluating QBs the last ten years have become so much more advanced than the previous ten years that franchise QB's don't slip through the cracks like they used to. Romo and Cassell are exceptions, not the rule. Those type guys rarely happen.

BUT if the FA has had some success you end up getting in a bidding war that drives up the price and you usually end up over paying for a guy that wasn't good enough to stay with his original team.

In other leagues these are viable options, but in the NFC South it won't work anymore.

Rivera know this more than anybody. If he thinks their guy is in this draft he will lobby HARD for him.

Because in reality ALL QB's are projects. Rivera knows the longer he waits, the more likely he will unemployed in three years.

Lets say we wait until next year to draft a QB but next season we still have that FA under contract for one more year. He plays that year while (let's say) Luck develops. We let that FA walk and start Luck in year three of the Rivera era. Luck has the normal growing pains of a first year starter even with a year under his belt. Luck has some flashes but we finish that year 6-10.

See ya Ron. You didn't get it done. Next coach comes in Luck is more comfortable and becomes in his third year the QB everyody thought he would. We go 12-4 win the division.

Meanwhile, Rivera is sitting in the unemployment line with is thumb up his ass.

Now if we draft one this year he will have a full two years to develop before Ron really goes on the hot seat in season three.

In Summary, Rivera knows he needs a franchise QB this year. But if they decide not to go in that direction, whoever we draft next year will be thrown in the fire both sooner, and with less margin for error.

Rivera knows this. So don't be surprised if we reach out and get a QB!!

So Orton has been named the preliminary starter in Denver and they have no one behind The Golden Calf of Bristol should he leave and Fox is their HC.

The Eagles have no reason to move Kolb for anything less than a 1st round pick.

Who does that leave as trade bait that has any reasonable amount of talent or upside? Flynn?

The FA class is headlined by Billy "lol" Volek and Matt "can't play when it matters" Moore. Maybe we can win the Brian St. Pierre sweepstakes.

Under contract we have Clausen and Pike. One guy our #1 receiver hates and showed nothing. The other you have to check the roster page on the website to make sure he's actually on the team.

Let's ride that wave to 5 wins and pray to God Luck declares next year. Sign St. Pierre for two years just in case.

Every coach on the Panthers offensive staff is no more than two steps removed from Norv Turner (and that's clearly no accident).

Norv Turner's coaching mentor was Ernie Zampese.

Carson Palmer's longtime quarterback coach is Ken Zampese, Ernie's son.

It makes some sense.

After someone else mentioned it...wouldn't targetting Volek (SD) make perfect sense to bring in to mentor/backup Clausen as he also brings familiarity with Rivera?

Give Clausen another year.

Either bring in a Volek...or sign Moore to 1 more year just to see. Then move on from there if it's a fail.

Matt Flynn but if we do that we might as well play the year out with clausen. It's exchanging one question mark for another.

Clausen isn't a question mark. He doesn't fit the offense. Why waste time on a QB who needs to be in a completely different offense.

It does make sense, but while we can say clearly that Rivera and Chudzinski are acquainted with Volek, we don't know if they like him.
