Draft Scuttlebutt.

I was listening to ESPN Radio, like I normally do, and I heard a few things that some of you may not know, and I'd ask that you post something interesting also (if you heard something). I'll start:

 

First off, Sean McVay wasn't too enamored with the Ty Simpson pick, and why would he be? That was a Les Snead pick. Apparently McVay doesn't have a good poker face at all. He didn't get that impact player to perhaps put them over the top this year, and Stafford may not have been too happy either as the conversation between him and Snead (shall remain "private"). Hell, a lot of Rams may be feeling some type of way. 

Secondly, the Vikings reached hard for Caleb Banks. The DT class wasn't considered great, so maybe they reached out of a great sense of need because they were going to be left out at a position that screamed for an upgrade.

Speaking of left out, the Bills tried to trade back into the first round for KC Concepcion and were obviously unsuccessful. They then tried to trade back into the first for Omar Cooper Jr--another fail! What the hell was Brandon Beane thinking? Some suspect Denzel Boston is a must.

The hometown hosts were on the phone with Makai Lemon, when they were outdone by Howie Roseman. That's an Ostrich egg on the face for Omar Khan.

I think McVay both wanted a player to try to help him win another one with Stafford AND was thinking.... oh great, already been down this road with Goff of a young QB who has everything you want in terms of intangibles but is basically "barely checks the box" level across the board in terms of physical tool set.

Rams fumbled bad. Star receiver in rehab, playoff team drafting a for sure benchwarmer. Coach was pissed, fans pissed, players probably too. I love Puka tho, real life Jonah from Tonga.

McVeigh was close to retiring after '22. There is no way they didn't get his consent to draft Simpson.  I wasn't surprised they made the pick; i was surprised they didn't try to trade back before making the pick but they could have been afraid the Jets or Steelers would grab him first.  They still need a wr but that position is pretty deep in this draft.

Pie just for knowing that show.....

I still think they thought fuggit its the Falcons pick so lets just try and snag a position of need. Wouldn't be shocked if they draft another one late like the good ole Browns last year. Stafford is old AF and his back is messed up. Analysis thought he would retire last year. Snead has shown he can find impact players outside of the 1st so he isn't sweating. 

If i was McVay i would've been pissed tho......

You never know how these things will work out. I only knew Lemon’s video I didn’t know him so to speak. And I am hearing some things that indicate he could be a problem child.

They could've traded back into the 1st near the end of the round and still had Simpson for the selection. The only thing that might have been an obstacle was maybe they didn't have a trading partner.

Rapport today on Eisen today, explained that McVeigh was trying to be respectful to Stafford and not seen pushing him out the door

If you have conviction on a QB, even if you think you can do that, it wouldn't be smart, you just have to take him.

If they traded back it would have been a clear signal to the league what they were doing it for, as it wasn't a secret that they liked him.  Doing that then signals to the Cardinals, Jets, or whoever else that they need to trade up ahead of them to get him.

My only real issue with what they did, and it is very, very small since I am not a Rams fan and don't so much care, but the 13th pick is far too valuable a pick to use it on a selection that, best case scenario, will not see the field for a year or two.

That is still in the territory of impact starter. Absolutely, it could be a repeat of how Green Bay handled their qb spot, except I know they didn't use the 13th pick on Rodgers or Love.

I get McVay and Rams’ fans point of view but also look at the Packers with Love, that was definitely a great move in hindsight to keep them competitive past their aging MVP QB. Also Stafford’s career was literally in question just this past offseason due to injuries. IDK anything about Simpson and seems like it was a reach but I also understand going for the QB you want and being fine with him sitting behind a guy like Stafford for a few years. You have a feeling he’ll wind up being a solid QB for them long term, but it certainly could blow up in their faces. Not terribly risky though since the pick was basically house money from the falcons
