NFL Draft rumors: Post-Combine

• Following the Combine, the word I received from a number of scouts is that because of his workout, Alabama’s Julio Jones now likely will be the number one overall wideout off the board over Georgia’s A.J. Green.

• Even with the rise of Alabama DT Marcell Dareus, all the scouts I have talked with still think Auburn DT Nick Fairley is the better NFL prospect.

• Talked to a couple of sources who said they have UCLA FS Rahim Moore graded out as nothing higher than a 3rd-round pick.

• The more scouts I discuss Auburn QB Cam Newton with the more they are afraid of not only his off the field character, but the overall posse he could ultimately end up coming into the league with. They raised the concern of just how committed to football he will be and who in his camp could ultimately keep him distracted from developing. -Wes Bunting

Previously being the keyword there.

Actually that was post combine, & is current.

1. Carolina Panthers: Cam Newton, QB, Auburn

It’s rare to find a quarterback with Newton’s physical skill set, and in a quarterback- driven league I have a tough time seeing the Panthers go in any other direction other than a signal caller.

Cam Newton is this years Jimmy Clausen. They dont question the skill set just his leadership. TBH though I trust Hurney and if he picks Cam I know he will be great. If he does not pick Cam then I know he had major issues.

Interesting indeed.

I think the Fairley vs Dareus comparison is much like the Newton vs Gabbert debate. One is a safer, yet less dynamic pick. Fairley and Newton have higher ceilings than their counterparts, but both also have lower floors, they're both your typical boom or bust candidates.

    • Yup. Hopefully  Brandon adds some muscle this off-season but he'll probably be resting his shoulder for a while so I doubt it. Miles should probably be replaced but I don't think we find a better 4th option to be honest. So is it better to add depth along side williams and Coby or try to upgrade the 4/5 . I think adding depth will probably be more beneficial than trying to upgrade starters and bank on Brandon and Kons continuing development. I really don't think they are going to make the playoffs unfortunately. I think the big hole they put themselves in has exhausted them. They've been amazing since January 1 but I think it's come at a cost and their legs are gone.
    • The issue is the predictability of it all in a Bryce Young led offense. In 4th down attempts the Jets were at 41 and we were at 40. And we were 4th in conversation %. We were 25th in the league in 3rd down conversion because we faced so many 3rd and longs in part due to playcalling on 1st and 2nd down but more largely due to the limitations that cannot be overcome.  And people want us to spend another 1st rounder on WR as if it is going to magically give Bryce physical talent he will never possess. It's a shame we cut off our own nose just to put ourselves in this frustrating predicament.
