Peterson WANTS to go to the draft in NY.

Yea I don't see why any top pro prospect that's expected to hear his name early wouldn't want to attend the draft.

Because making a symbolic gesture of solidarity will mean much more to them down the road than getting to walk across the stage in front of the entire nation, being greeted by the commissioner of the NFL and being handed a hat and jersey like so many of their idols before them.

Sure, they've been dreaming of this day since they were kids, but they should be willing to forego living those dreams in order to make a gesture in support of a thousand guys they've never met in regard to something that'll likely be over in a few months.

(or at least that's what the former NFLPA seems to believe) :frown2:

Yep and on top of that the former NFLPA seems to have agreed on a rookie scale that cut their first salary a lot. So sure they should do them a solidarity favor :D

ummm...most prospects pass on attending the draft so they can enjoy the moment with as many family and friends as possible.

Most prospects aren't invited.

Only the top ten or twenty or so are invited to New York. The vast majority of them do come, and they tend to bring their families along.

The only top prospect I can think of recently who was invited and turned it down was Joe Thomas.

As the article suggests, the draft is really not about the owners but the fans. For the players trade union to try and disrupt it diminishes the fan experience and hurts football across the board. In the end things that hurt the fans who pay the bills indirectly and football in general hurt the players as well given they get 50 -60 % of the pie. Seems to me they are cutting off their nose to spite their face at this point.

just recently, The Golden Calf of Bristol...and (drum roll) jimmy clausen both turned down draft invitations.

mark sanchez is another.

despite stating there are a limited amount of invites, the reason why it seems like so many accept is because the nfl keeps inviting until a certain amount of top prospects accept.

it wouldn't look good on tv if they limited the invites and no one showed up.

    • I originally hated the Miller deal but with the cap projected to rise nearly $10M next season the Canes struck some pretty good deals between Miller and Ehlers. Most of the team is locked in for the next few years. Nikishin will need an extension probably in the $6M AAV range. And Blake will need one if we don’t move him. Personally I’d move Blake, picks, and any prospect not named Nikishin/Nadeau/Artamonov for McTavish as I don’t see any any of the big time players moving teams next year. Realistically the Hurricanes should just target Gustavsson next year to fix the goal tending issue. But I’m all for moving Blake, picks, and prospects for McTavish this year. Ehlers - Aho - Jarvis Svechnikov - McTavish - Stankoven Martinook - Staal - Carrier Hall - Kotkaniemi - Robinson Jost - Jankowski Slavin - Miller Nikishin - Chatfield Gostisbehere - Walker Reilly Andersen Kochetkov I’d do Blake, Felix-Unger-Sorum, and 27 2nd for McTavish.
    • Very true on the length but stuff like this is never where we shine. We aren’t a good team at drafting.
    • Homerism aside, the more I see from Dan, the more impressed I am.  His player evaluation instincts. Last year his 2 premier FA signings, Hunt and Lewis COMPLETELY changed the line and I have a feeling his success in choosing blue chip guys will continue.  Look at the panthers’s rep for FA signings in the past. By and large, it’s been guys 1 year past their prime who had an injury and suckered our GM in to a crippling contract. We never get nice things. When was the last time this team signed 2 young blue chip studs  in the same offseason to contracts worthy of their impact? Ever?  Im telling y’all, players respect and trust Morgan.
