NFP on Clausen

Clausen could be next victim of NFL draft

Going into my second season as a pro with the Rams, I expected to compete for a starting safety spot in 2001. After getting on the field in a starting role for a couple of games as a rookie and showing up on tape covering kicks, this was my opportunity to win a job that I could keep early in my career.

That lasted until we drafted safety Adam Archuleta with our first round pick in late April. There would be no real competition for a starting job. Instead I spent the month of August fighting for a roster spot in Macomb, Illinois during training camp.

Jimmy Clausen ICONClausen could be replaced by Cam Newton if the Panthers take the Auburn QB at No.1.

Panthers’ QB Jimmy Clausen could be in the same situation. A new head coach that is holding the No.1 overall pick with rumors becoming more prevalent that Auburn QB Cam Newton will be the first player to hear his name called next Thursday night.

And if the Heisman Trophy winner is announced as the top pick in the 2011 draft, Clausen should give his agent a call—because his time will be just about done in Carolina.

I get where Bowen is coming from with this, but I don't buy the notion that Clausen could be shipped out this year. I didn't even buy that when I thought Luck would be the number one. Worth remembering that the guy who makes those decisions still hasn't given up on him just yet.

Moore would have to do with Clausen getting cut than Newton would if we draft him. You know we will keep 2 QBs possibly 3. Even if we draft Newton it isn't likely we would cut Clausen given he is on a relatively cheap rookie contract. We are going to pay Moore more money than we are paying Clausen this year. As long as Clausen beats Pike, he would still be a third quarterback if we draft Newton. And I can't see any way we don't put 3 QBs on the active roster this year.

teams have parted with 2nd round QBs after a year in 2 of the last 3 drafts.....both those teams didn't even have turnover at HC.

I doubt either of those looked as horrific as Clausen either. Not sure why people keep claiming they can't see Clausen going into camp and getting cut....when it has happened recently and with guys who weren't as pathetic.

The Panthers cut a third rounder the same year they drafted him a few years back (Attiyah Ellison) but he wasn't a quarterback.

Clausen has actually started games and has at least one supporter in the front office (Hurney) and one guy who says last year wasn't a fair test (Rivera).

I don't see him being cut or shipped this year. Next year, if he shows no improvement, all bets are off.

I didn't say Carolina did it....I said teams (as in other NFL teams) have parted with 2nd round QBs after a year in 2 of the last 3 drafts.

Yeah, he has two real big supporters about to draft Cam Newton

He should have already shown improvement considering he played in 13 games and started 10......worst rookie showing in 20 years. New eras don't waste lots of time with old QBs (especially ones that they can't seem to see if he "fits anywhere"). Like recent history has shown....2nd round QBs who just don't look worth the energy have been sent packing VERY recently.

    • Either way there's some tough teams on the schedule this year, on paper anyways.
    • Same. I would prefer a MNF game earlier in the season. As if more likely has some significance in case things go south this season. If we perform well enough we could even get another game forced to a Sunday night spot later in the season.
    • Wanted to jump into this thread. Although I do not post anymore I do look in as there are a few old friends around. Loved hearing some of the names you mentioned.  Another  oldie is NanceUSMC.  He is the one who got me here from the old Observer forum.  Good guy and smart football guy. I have learned a lot from a lot of good Huddlers over the years, Over time. we have sadly lost a few who left this earth too soon.  Anyone who know of someone, it would be nice to try to make a list.  One of the more recent, CosmoGirl,  was someone that kind of hit hard.  Life sucks sometimes. Some of the best times were when we had our own tailgate and could meet up in person.  I think it made us better. Several dedicated volunteers, lead by LiverMush, started setting things up in the wee hours of each gameday morning.  Don't know all those regulars but I remember JakeFlake was one.  For you newbies...each game,  a Huddler (or a group) sponsored the food for each tailgate.  Eating was free but a donation was asked for.  At the end of the year those donations were used to buy bicycles for Toys for Tots.  Over the years Huddlers bought a lot of new bikes for kids for Christmas.  (I am guessing a couple of hundred each year.)  We had a good time getting together, got to make friends in person, and then got to feel like you were doing something good. It was truly a community. I got to meet Dan Morgan at one of our tailgates...he brought pizza from his restaurant.  How many of you remember that?  Glad the restaurant did not make it....lol. Not only have people changed, and come and gone.....but the entire nature and purpose has changed. Nothing lasts forever and we move on but we still like to think about good times. Same reason we take pictures. Want to ask a question I have not seen anyone else mention......who remembers    "The Couch" ?  We have argued, laughed, lived the ups and downs of football and dealt with a little real life along the way.  A thanks to  the Mods who keep this going.  I am sure they sacrifice a lot of their time out of love for the forum and the Panthers. Take care my friends and be well.  I will close with my new favorite quote which I think is greatly needed in these difficult times.
